Chapter Text
The couple just got home after the inserting of the embryo’s in to Carina’s uterus. Two days after the egg retrieval they got the call that they could come in for the impregnation. Together they decided to implant 3 eggs and freeze two for a possible other try but hopefully one of the embryo’s would latch on.
Maya was in the kitchen preparing dinner and she couldn’t help her wife’s nervous wandering in the kitchen.
“Is everything okay, love?” Maya asked. She knew the chance of complications after the implantation were so small but her protective side immediately kicked in, worrying something was wrong.
“Yes, everything is fine bambina .” Carina answers while nervously fidgeting with the vegetables that were lying on the cutting board on their kitchen island.
Maya flips over the chicken that she is baking and then turns around facing her wife.
“Cause you look kinda worried now” Maya says, now standing face to face with Carina and grabbing her hands to stop fidgeting.
Carina diverts her eyes from her wife’s and watches their combined hands. “I just don’t think I can handle another negative test.” She confesses with the smallest voice and tears start prickling in her eyes.
Maya’s heart breaks at the confession. Normally the two week wait to take the pregnancy test should be exciting but this time they both were very nervous about it.
“I know you are putting in so much work with Diane and I appreciate that so much but the previous 5 negative tests took such a toll on our relationship and on each of us individually. I just don’t want to go through any of that again.” Carina confesses. Tears now running over her cheek, finally being able to look in Maya’s eyes.
“I get that love, undoubtedly it’s going to hurt a lot if the test is negative. But I can promise you I will be by your side every step of the way. I know that you had to take our last test alone because I was in such a bad place and there is no way I will ever make up for that. I promise that we will be together through every step and we will try everything to have a baby together.” Maya says while stroking away a few stray tears on her wife’s cheek.
“I know bambina, I know that you are soo much better now but I can’t help the anxiety sometimes.”
“I understand but please tell me if you’re anxiety kicks in, I will do my very best to try to reassure you over and over again.” Maya says while giving a smile to her wife.
The Maya of a year ago would not believe she was ushering her wife to communicate with her about this stuff, therapy was really doing it’s work.
Carina put her arms on Maya’s shoulders so they are standing front to front “When I was at that fake clinic with Ben and Miranda I had to take a pretent pregnancy test. Seeing the test positive and knowing it was not real was so hard.” She confessed, feeling vulnerable in front of her wife.
“I’m sorry that you had to go through that alone too.” Maya says, feeling guilty for all that her wife had to go through alone.
They look into each others eyes for a second, feeling the comfort radiate from the connection they have. After a few seconds Carina put her face in the crook of Maya’s neck, inhaling her sent and pressing a few kisses to her neck.
Maya strokes up and down over Carina’s spine under her shirt trying to provide some comfort. “We’ll be alright love.” She whispers.

It has now been 10 days after the insemination. The couple was getting more and more nervous about taking a pregnancy test.
The sound of her phone woke Maya up, it was 2 a.m and way to early to wake up because neither women had to work until later that day.
Maya reads the message, it said that there was a 4 alarm downtown and they expect it to get to 5. She sighs at the look of her phone not wanting to get out of bed anytime soon.
Maya turned to look at her wife who was still peacefully asleep. After a few seconds staring at her wife she puts her face near Carina’s ear and whispers “love wake up please.”
Carina wakes up at the sound “hmmm bambina it’s soo early.”
“I know but you can stay in bed. There is a 4 alarm downtown that might go to 5 so I have to get to work.” Maya says with a disappointed look in her eyes.
At that sentence Carina is wide awake. Since the insemination she had been more and more worried when Maya is at work.
Carina wraps her arms around her wife’s middle and pulls so she is lying right on top of her. “Please be careful bambina .”
“Always” Maya whispers and presses a kiss to her wife’s beautiful lips.
One thing that the firefighter can’t get over is the butterfly’s she still gets after kissing her wife.
Maya pushes on her arms to get up but gets pulled down again.
“I think I might be pregnant. My boobs are bigger and yesterday I could not stop snacking, I think it is a good sign.” Carina confesses.
Maya looks at her wife for a few seconds processing the information. Then pulls her wife in for a tight hug and whispers in her hair “that’s great news love, I can’t wait to start this family with you.”
At that confession Carina gets emotional because of the difference in reaction she gets in comparison with a few months ago. Another example that her wife is doing so much better.
They stay in each others embrace for a few more minutes.
Then Maya comes up out of her wife’s neck and looks down between the two off them with a frown on her face. She then cups her wife’s left breast and says “they do look bigger, I like it.”
“You should see them without a shirt on.” Carina teases her wife.
“Oh I plan to.” Maya says with a smirk on her face and dips her head underneath her wife’s shirt, pressing a few kisses on the abdomen.
“Don’t start anything you can’t finish bambina .” Carina says chuckling.
Maya sighs and realizes she should get going.
“I never want to leave this place” Maya mumbles while giving her wife’s breast attention with her mouth.
“The appartement?” Carina asks confused.
“No your beautiful boobs” Maya confesses. “I wish I could take them with them.”
“That would be a sight, you fighting fire’s with two boobs in hand.” Carina says and they both start laughing.
After that Maya finally manages to get to the bathroom to get ready to go into work.
She is ready to leave but not before giving an ‘I love you’ and a kiss to her wife and getting a ‘be safe’ in respons.

Carina wakes up again at 8 am to her alarm, she immediately checks her phone for any messages from her wife but there is nothing.
The doctor starts to prepare a breakfast although she isn’t really that hungry knowing her wife is fighting a dangerous fire but she decides to eat anyway thinking she might be pregnant.
After eating breakfast Carina turns on the tv to check the news. All the way through breakfast she was telling herself not to turn on the news because the images that they showed always made her panic about her wife go through the roof.
It was a fire in a factory that made battery’s so it was difficult to contain because of the chemicals.
The reporter says they have been fighting the fire for hours now and there is still 30% to go. “They lost the lives of 5 workers of the plant and 3 firefighters were transferred to the hospital with severe chemical burns.” The reporter says.
Carina’s mind starts spinning and she pulls out her phone sending a message to her wife, knowing she wouldn’t be able to answer a call now.
Carina : Just woke up, could you please let me know you are okay? Xxx
She stares at her phone for a few minutes waiting for the dots to tell that her wife is typing but they do not appear.
“If Maya was brought to Grey Sloan they would call her right?” She thinks to herself.
She could go down to the hospital? Or the station? She could call Ben? Or Andy?
Carina starts shaking her head no “don’t let this panic get to you Carina, Maya is just fine” she says to herself.
The doctor decides to start her day and start writing on her research paper but not before writing another message to Maya to please answer her.
By noon Carina has been able to do some research but not without checking her phone every other minute or pacing the appartement sometimes.
Finally she hears the lock of their appartement door open. The doctor strides the appartement in a few big steps until she is face to face with her tired wife.
“You know you could let your possible pregnant wife know you are still alive right?” Carina says while raising her voice more and more.
“I’m sorry love, my phone died.” Maya says walking past her wife to go take a shower.
“And Andy or Ben don’t have a phone to send a quick message?” Carina shouts while urging her wife to look at her.
At the mentioning of Ben’s name Maya’s face drops, Carina notices and waits for her to say something.
“Ben was brought to the hospital with third degree burns allover his leg.” Maya says with a voice so small while watching the ground, not being able to watch Carina in the eyes.
At that Carina’s anger disappears and is replaced with pity. She grabs Maya and submerges her in a tight hug.
In the embrace of her wife Maya lets a few tears fall, finally getting rid of the emotional buildup of the day.
“I’m sorry I did’t call you” Maya whispers to her wife.
Carina crumbles at the sound of her wife’s voice. “I can’t raise this baby without you bambina, I need you, we need you. You have to let me know you are okay or I will freak out with this little bambino that might be growing inside me.”
Maya nods vigorously in her neck “I will always come back to you. Will you join me for a shower.”
Carina washes Maya’s hair and then puts her to bed because she is exhausted and can’t help but join her wife in bed for a much needed cuddling session.

On the 14th day after the insemination Maya wakes up first as usual. Both wife’s have the day off and they decided to take a pregnancy test at home before going to the clinic to get her bloodwork’s to know for sure.
Waking up the blonde immediately feels a sense of excitement but also a nervousness incase the test is negative.
Carina is still very much asleep so Maya wants to surprise her wife with breakfast in bed.
After wiping up some waffels, thee and orange juice she walks back in to their room surprised to see her wife is already awake.
“Good morning love I made us some breakfast in bed.” Maya says excited.
Carina puts her knees to her chest and her face in her hands and starts crying.
“Hey hey hey what is wrong?” Maya is shocked with the sudden outburst of tears and is concerned about her wife.
After a while Carina’s sobs reduce and she looks to her side to see her wife’s concerned face and her arms already wrapped around her.
“I’m sorry I just had such a bad dream and it felt so real.” Carina says with a sad tone.
“Want to tell me about it?” Maya asks, worry evident in her voice.
Carina nods and lays her head on Maya’s shoulder, not comfortable with eye contact right now. “I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. So I called you and you were so mad at me for not being able to provide a family. I felt so alone and it all felt so real.”
Maya is now crying to because of the heartbreaking confession. “You know that I would never be mad about that right?”
“Of course I know bambina. Can we please go take a test, I don’t think I can wait any longer.”
Maya starts smiling at that again “Of course love but just so you know no matter what the result is I love you so much.” Maya says while giving kisses to Carina’s shoulder.
“I love you too bambina .”
They go into the bathroom together. While Carina is peeing on the stick Maya brushes her teeth not knowing what to do with her nerves other wise.
The 3 minute wait seems to last an eternity.
2 minutes
Carina brushes her teeth while Maya stands beside her and wraps her arms around her and gives sweet kisses to her neck.
1 minute
After brushing her teeth Carina turns around in her wife’s embrace. Not saying anything just in each other’s presence calming the nerves.
The timer of Maya’s phone goes off indicating the 3 minutes are done.
They look at each other, ready to turn the pregnancy around and find out if they are about to become mothers.

Carina turns the stick around and they both look at it. After a few seconds she drops it to the floor wanting to wrap her arms around her wife.
Maya catches her wife’s embrace and they both start crying.
After a few minutes in each other’s embrace Maya drops to her knees, surprising Carina. She lifts Carina’s shirt so her belly is exposed.
“We are gonna love you so much” Maya says to Carina’s abdomen and presses a kiss to it while Carina wraps her hands in her wife’s hair.
They are going to become mothers… finally.
