Chapter Text

When Adam woke up for the second time, it was like deja vu. The world was dark and quiet, except this time Reeve was gone. Adam felt the bed where he should’ve been - it was warm. He must've just left , Adam thought. So, despite the sting in his chest, and the light headedness, he stood up in search.

He only made it three steps before he felt like passing out. Adam tried to grab something, but he had no idea what was in the room or where it was. Just as he was about to drop, strong arms grabbed his waist.

“Adam? What are you doing up?”

Instead of replying, Adam let his head fall against Reeve’s chest, with no more energy to hold it up himself. He was vaguely aware of being laid down again, and of Reeve joining him, and holding his hand, but his head didn’t stop swimming for a few more minutes.

He could hear his friend asking him questions, “how are you feeling?” and “are you okay?” and “do you want anything?”

When the pain subsided, and Adam was able to open his eyes, he let go of Reeve’s hand and pulled at his shirt weakly. Reeve obliged, shuffling closer.

He and Adam hadn’t been this touchy in a while, so Reeve whispered again, trying not to worsen Adam’s headache. “Addy, are you okay?”

“Cold,” was all he got.

He exhaled. Adam probably wouldn't remember anything when he woke up next. At least he’s resting, Reeve thought as he pulled the covers tighter around them, sliding an arm around Adam’s middle.

Like old times.

When Adam awoke for the third time, the world was sunny and loud. He could hear cheering and animated banter from outside. Like last time, Reeve was gone. Also, like last time, he quickly returned before Adam could do anything to hurt himself by accident.

Upon opening the door to find Adam not only conscious, but sitting, Reeve grinned.

“Hey, sleeping beauty, how you feeling today?”

Adam rubbed his sore neck. “Restless.”

Reeve let out a breathy laugh. “I knew you’d say that. Let’s go on a walk.”

After Reeve all but carried Adam up the hill, they sat at the edge of the sparse woods, near the cliffside, overlooking the water.

They had taken the long way around to avoid any of the lively Vikings, whose shouting was making Adam’s head start to throb.

“So it's been two days. The others got…eaten by a giant sea creature called Tursas, but it's all okay, because it only eats on full moons, so it probably spat them out in its cave, and we have a week to save them?”

Reeve nodded. Adam could tell he had been struggling, trying to figure out what to do. Adam’s heart ached for him. He looked tired, so Adam tried to do what Reeve always did for him: lighten the mood.

“So… I got knocked out on impact after I faceplanted into the water?” Adam sighed, internally cringing.

“Yep,” The corner of Reeve’s mouth twitched, before worry overtook his features at the memory. “So much for your ninja moves,”

Adam rolled his eyes. “I had to get fished out of the lake by a giant, muscley, viking lady?”

“She was pretty heroic about it,” Reeve said, smiling again. “Can’t say the same for you, though, you looked like a wet cat.”

“I'm going  to choose to ignore that last part.” Adam said gracefully. “I suppose I should go thank my saviour,”

“Oh, no, little one!” Brynhilda exclaimed out of nowhere, causing the boys to jump. For a 7 foot woman covered in metal armour, she sure moves silently. “All Brynhilda did was pluck you both from water. The saving, that was other little one!”

Adam looked at Reeve, who was staring out at the water behind them, and smiled softly.

“Thanks for saving my life, prince charming,” Adam said, playfully nudging Reeve.

Reeve put a hand on the back of his neck, turning his face away. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. It’s no big deal, you know,” He mumbled.

Adam’s smile grew affectionately. Typical Reeve, Adam thought warmly. I’ve missed you.
