You Don't Know How It Feels

Chapter 6

Summary:

Oh, the places you'll go... But first, the places you've been!

Notes:

Trigger Warning: Car accident, panic attacks, tense encounters.

Holy shit, it's been waaaay too long, lovelies! This chapter is filled with angst, I'll just warn you now. I apologize for how short it is, but I hope to start writing again in a more timely manner.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Arin and Brian showed up at the hospital as quick as they could. “Hi, um, we’re looking for Dan Avidan. He was just in a car accident.” The nurse at the nurse’s station brought the two of them to the emergency room. The distraught look on your face didn't do much to ease their worries, but Arin knew he had to do something. After all, he knew about Dan's feelings towards you.

That had been nearly two years ago. So much has changed since then, boys and girls… Where do we begin? Let’s catch you all up to speed. Arin and Brian were able to calm your nerves easily. You guys played games like Would You Rather and 20 Questions to pass the time. Dan was patched up, and everyone got to go home that night. And by that, what really happened was Dan actually went with you back to your apartment, in a taxi.

He couldn’t stand to send you home alone, after all that had happened. Not to mention, you still didn’t know what your final grades were for your exams. He wanted to be there for you so badly. No, he needed to be there. He needed your presence. Your douche bag ex never filed anything against you because the wreck was absolutely his fault anyway. So, there’s your first win of the evening. The second win came when you’d received your final grades; 3 A’s and 2 B’s! You couldn’t have been any more excited… or so you thought.

After the wreck, Dan made up his mind that life was too short not to tell you how he felt towards you. And of course, you ‘fessed up, as well. He let you make the first move, like the gentleman he is. One thing led to another, and Dan was spending many more nights at your apartment. Life was good. Hell, life was more than good; it was fantastic! You got through your college internship, graduated in the Spring of 2019, and then landed your first job a little over two months later. Your dream of working with children and their families was now reality. What could possibly go wrong?

Oh, yeah… one thing. And you all know where this is going: Dan was no longer with you; he was and is still with Ashley. Now, you have since accepted it. It was hard at first, extremely difficult. But despite everything, you managed to still be friends. Who would have thought? Dan and Brian’s success kept growing, as well as the Grumps. Lot of changes with the channel, too. Barry had moved on to do his own thing, Holly and Ross had split up, Matt and Ryan… But you were still there, still in touch with everyone. You promised Dan that you weren’t going anywhere, no matter what.

Dan didn’t call near as much as he used to, given his hectic schedule. Not that you had much free time either, but it still kind of sucked. Suzy would FaceTime with you every now and then, and Arin would chime in from time to time, which was always nice. When work for you became overwhelming, talking to Arin and Suzy was a surefire way to ease the stress. Still, you missed hanging out. You missed having dinner as a group, trips to the karaoke bar, being part of charity livestreams… you missed Dan most of all. He weighed heavy on your mind on nights like tonight, but you knew you couldn’t reach out to him. Starbomb had released a highly anticipated album, Under The Covers 3 will soon be released, new music videos are being uploaded, new original music was in the works… Dan’s got too much dip on his chip to talk to you right now.

You had work you needed to do, anyways. You have a caseload of nearly 60 children to keep track of each month. You had progress notes to type, treatment plans to review, phone calls to rehearse for the next day… You don’t have time for all of these emotions. And then, you heard it distantly, from the clock radio in your home office. It felt like an old friend coming to visit you; you nearly burst into tears.

You don’t know how it feels,
You don’t know how it feels,
No, you don’t know how it feels…
To be me…

Notes:

I actually love the idea of a clock radio. Is that too retro for y'all? Eh, idk but I don't care, I love it.

Aaah! I can't believe I'm back! I hope you all found this update to be worth the wait. If you follow me on tumblr, you're aware that I do work a full-time job now. So, this chapter is more or less a reflection of things that have happened irl, including my personal life!

Let me know what you think, by all means! Please, do be gentle with me. And, as always, I am absolutely open to suggestions! <3

Notes:

Slight insert of myself here, because life is totally kicking my ass lately! Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter!
