"Well, obviously werewolves don't exist," Rumi laughed, shaking her head at her friend's strangeness. She tried to make it genuine, but she had never been any good at lying. "They are myths, right? And the occasional B-Movie monster?"
"Rumi, love, shut up." Mira's hands had moved with purpose, pulling her hair behind her head and into a severe ponytail, but now they hesitated, running over Rumi's shoulders, almost like she was worried. "You know you can talk to us, right?"
"I know I can, but--"
"We saw you," Zoey blurted, face immediately flushing red at the admission. "We saw you shift back. You were a wolf, then you were a girl. Um, a woman."
"A very naked woman, I might add," Mira added dryly.
"Oh."

Eight years ago they lost Rumi. Vanished, without a word. They replay their last day with her in their heads over and over, wondering what they could have done differently. Wondering if there had been signs that she needed help. They didn't want to assume the worst. After all, it's not like there was a body.
