Summary
Silence used to be peaceful for Bucky. These days it makes him feel like he's waiting for something, like he's listening for the warning sounds of predators approaching.
Now silence means he's waiting for the other shoe to drop.
He lives in a beautiful apartment with his husband-to-be and tells himself that everything is just fine. He doesn't sleep, he's scared of putting a foot wrong in case Brock snaps again, and he's desperately lonely, but he has everything he ever wants and that should be enough. It's not like he can complain about being taken care of, even if parts of it aren't exactly his choice.
Running into his childhood friend (literally) just might change everything. 'Just fine' doesn't seem like enough once Steve walks back into his life. The problem is, Bucky's been stuck in his cage for so long that he's not sure he can leave it on his own.

The sheriff watched him for a moment, then he sighed and turned slightly. He reached out to open a cabinet door beside him, and pulled out a shelf. It was on a track, so it rolled out of the cabinet fairly easily, and held a small CCTV. Derek frowned and inched his chair to the side a little bit so he could get a better angle.
He was looking at a teenager, or someone at least young enough to be the same age as Scott. He was sitting on a bed in what looked to be a larger room, the area he was in surrounded by four glass walls, with his legs crossed and head tilted.
He was also staring directly into the camera, as if he knew someone was watching. A creepy smile slowly slid onto the teen’s face, and he held up one hand, wiggling his fingers in a slow, eery wave.
Derek felt his mouth run dry. He didn’t know who this kid was, but he didn’t like him.
“Who is that?” he asked quietly.
“That,” said the sheriff, “is my son.”

What if Neal hadn’t planned any of it?
Peter finds Neal after he'd been shot, and spends the next day scrubbing red from underneath his fingernails.Or,
“You’re my best friend.”
And then Neal closed his eyes, and his heart stopped beating beneath Peter’s hands and his breath left him and his pulse ceased to thrum, and there was more red outside his veins than in, and something twisted in Peter’s chest so agonisingly a cry he didn’t hear was torn from his lips.
Oh god.
In the end, the emergency operation required two surgeons, five theatre nurses, six hours and twenty-three minutes of intensive surgery, forty-three stitches bound to leave hell of a scar, and two full bags of transfusive blood to make up for the approximate thirty-eight percent Neal had lost.
It had been an incredibly narrow miss, Peter realised.
