Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice.
He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.
Impact.
The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

Ilya’s heart is breaking. He doesn’t want the first thing he does, the very first thing, after Shane’s choices have been so brutally ripped away from him, to be something Shane is begging him not to do. But Shane is seriously injured, much beyond what they can handle with first aid at home or even if they found a discreet doctor to make a house call. He will need an MRI, a broken bone set, probably surgery. And evidence should be collected too, for the police. That part Ilya will not push him on. But he cannot let Shane risk his life for his pride and the fear of shame that has controlled him for so long. “I am sorry, moy lyubimyy,” Ilya says, “So sorry. But Marleau is calling ambulance, and you are going to the hospital.”

Shane and Ilya are spending Christmas together in Boston during Ilya's last season playing for the Bears. They're finally out, and they're in love, and soon they'll only live two hours apart.

“Do you know where you are?”
“The hospital. Did I fall on the ice?”
“Something like that. Can you tell me the last thing you remember?”
Shane goes quiet, trying to bring up any clear memory. He gets flashes of things. Hands on his waist, speeding down the ice with a smile on his face, lips trailing down his neck, cheers and screams from the crowd, his parents sitting across from him at their kitchen table, falling asleep listening to the sound of a heart beating.
“Shane?”
“Sorry, I can’t- There’s lots of little pieces. But I can’t think clearly through this headache.”

Shane gets hit. Hard. He doesn't know what year it is, why he's in the hospital, or who the man in the corner with the pretty hair is. His parents are keeping things from him, but this kind stranger (?) starts filling in little details that Shane wishes he remembered.
And then he accidentally sees the video.aka shane gets amnesia and can't remember his husband or his team or really... anything. angst, anxiety, and falling back in love ensue <3
