Summary
Instead, happiness had turned out to be a man with cold extremities.
Because of course it had.
Jack shifted behind him and, with a level of audacity usually reserved for toddlers and Roman emperors, slid his frozen foot against Robby’s calf.
Robby shot upright.
“No.”
Jack burst out laughing.
“No. Absolutely not. That is an act of war.”

“You don’t think I can take care of you?” Jack says, standing right behind Robby, almost whispering it into his ear.
Robby closes his eyes, and wonders when he lost control of his own damn department.

Summary
The hours in the days that follow are marked by the sunlight, and then lack thereof. Then sleep. Shower. The periods of travel are divided by the breaks when he becomes too hungry to keep going like a wind-up toy.
He'd thought he would be existing by the established shift rhythm. 8 am, 10 am, 2 pm. Hand-off.
But no. Truly, some sort of string had been cut off, somewhere between taking the bike away from the hospital parking spot and reaching the first hotel. It isn't exactly a relief, even if his body thinks it is.
Robby leaves on his Sabbatical alone, with plans. Except, technically, he's not alone. He just doesn't know it yet. No one does.

Summary
If he were at home, he’d be at the Pitt finishing up a shift, hoping whatever they were in the middle of would slow down long enough to round with Robby. But he wasn’t home, he was in Baltimore at the International Disaster and Emergency Resilience Symposium where he was expected to close out the three-day conference with a lecture on crisis leadership, improvisation, and austere care. That meant not only being awake during the day but also being on, prepared to network, interact, and provide insight without having his hand in someone’s chest cavity. ---He was honored to be asked, but it was a bigger ask than he had been anticipating.
