    She released a huffed breath. “I absolutely cannot believe we’re doing this,” she said, studying their scrawled list of rules. “This is crazy, this is absolutely insane.”

    He lifted his hand, almost reached out to place it on her clenched fist but thought better of it. “Hey, we’ve got this. We’re the top students of the entirety of Avonlea High, if anybody can pull something like this off, we can.”

    She snorted.

    Gilbert plastered one of his trademark grins onto his face. “Alright, Carrots. This time Monday morning, we’ll be an official couple.” He reached his arm across the table, hand palm open.

    “You and that damned nickname,” she hissed back, but placed her own hand in his anyway. It dwarfed it.

    They shook, hands clasped in one another’s tightly, then immediately dropped them.

    “God help me,” Anne whispered.
