“You can’t do anything by yourself, can you, Bird?”
Matt paused like he wanted Jay to answer, a complete departure from his usual scolding methods. Jay fumbled around for a response. “I, uh— I’m— I can do stuff,” he said. “With— without you.” The defense was weak. His heart wasn’t in it. Jay also knew, deep down inside himself, that what Matt said was true.
“No, you can’t,” Matt corrected condescendingly. “Every time you try, you fail. It’s embarrassing, really. You’re useless without me.”
In which Matt tells Jay how stupid he is, and Jay learns something new about himself.

Summary
Two key truths had remained constant for Jay McCarrol since his childhood: one, Matt was always there; and two, Jay had no real sense of direction in his life.
On the rare occasions in which he had allowed himself to reflect on it, Jay had always ended up reaching the same conclusion: a change in number one must be the key to changing number two.
After experiencing a timeline without Matt at his side and making the decision to go back to set things right, though, Jay realizes how much he values the life that they have together, and it finally occurs to him that maybe the purpose that he’s been searching for his whole life has been right there in front of him the entire time.
Or, Jay decides to propose to Matt.

Matt blurts, “Have you ever tried, uh, edging?”
Jay stares.
“No? I do it all the time,” he lies. “It’s kind of involved, but you'd be surprised at how hard you can come, dude. For like four hours once I could only see in black and white.” Jay doesn't interrogate him about this. Jay doesn't say anything. It's like his battery ran out. “Jay?” Matt’s sitting up to investigate when his eyes catch on the noticeable bulge in Jay’s shorts. His stomach does a roller coaster drop flip.
Jay sees him see it. After a beat he seems to regain the ability to speak. “... Are you offering?”
What starts as a visualization exercise ends up dragging some unspoken desires into the open.
