Tim had to look down, bowed his head, eyes fixed on the cracked asphalt as he tried to fight the tears threatening to spill. He knew he had royally fucked up, ruined everything good in his life, but when the pain and anger at himself grew too loud, he punished himself the only way he knew how—by losing her.
It’s the worst thing he could’ve done to himself. Because he loved her still. He knew he always would. She is the love of his life, and sometimes… loving someone meant forcing yourself to let them walk away…
When you love someone, you’ve got to learn to let them go.
Even if it rips you apart.

Dr. Chen puts her hand up, stopping his rebuttal. “I just wanted to reiterate to you that I am more than qualified to be on this mission, and I will not let some jerk with an ego ruin this for me.”
Tim stares at her in shock, unsure of how to respond to this outburst.
Her eyebrow raises, “What? Nothing else you’d like to share about your insistence that I shouldn’t be here?”
Tim takes a breath, slightly shaking out the growing tension in his shoulders. “I believe that you believe you deserve to be here. But understand that if one person in that shuttle doesn’t know exactly what to do in a crisis, we all die.”
Dr. Chen’s lips purse, waiting for him to continue.
“So my apologies if it’s upsetting to you that I don’t trust that someone who hasn’t had the same level of training is joining our crew. Have a nice night, Dr. Chen.”
