    “Fine, I will,” Ilya snapped back.

    Hollander's eyes went wide, and so did Ilya's when he realized what he had promised. His words hung in the air between them, suddenly heavy with implication.

    Ilya doesn't think switching with Hollander one time for the sake of settling a bet will change anything about their arrangement, and it certainly wouldn't make him discover anything about himself. Afterall, it would only be one time, right?

    Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.

    It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.

    Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.

    Right???

    Something like grief churned in his sternum–that same something that would hit him in Boston winter when he was surrounded by stark, grey streets, and old buildings coated in snow, and twinkling Christmas lights in shop windows. The shape of it felt like Moscow along its jagged edges. Ilya shut his eyes and breathed.

    This time of year, the snow, all of it made him think of his mother. Of her warm blonde hair tucked into her fuzzy winter coat and of her magenta gloves bright against the snow as she balled up handfuls of snow to throw at Ilya and Alexei. Irina had loved the snow, had loved celebrating the festive season, and Ilya had spent the last decade and a half avoiding reminders of it.

    Or: Shane invites Ilya to Ottawa to spend the Christmas break with his family. Ilya deals with complex feelings about home, family, belonging, and grief.

    Set in the last year Ilya played for Boston before moving to Ottawa.

    While Shane and Ilya navigate the friction of planning a life together, Luca is fighting his own battle. Feeling the pressure of a championship legacy and a lingering knee injury, a reckless accident lands him in the ER, where an incredibly put-upon nursing student makes him feel the same sparks he sees flickering between his dad and his captain. Too bad she's utterly unimpressed by his stats, his name, or his trophies.

    The Hollander-Rozanov family is finding out that winning the Cup was the easy part. Building a home is where the real work begins.
