But… He isn’t doing anything but stroking her hair. It’s soft and nice, the motions comforting. They remind her of Emperor Father, who would hold her when she was little.

    “I want to go home!” she wails.

    Agula pulls Nangong Jingnu’s hands away from her face so she can look deep into those onyx eyes. “When the Luo River freezes, I will take you home,” she says.

    Nangong Jingnu catches herself on another sob, staring at Agula’s amber eyes. Suddenly, she does not feel she’s looking at a random tribesperson. She sees a steel in his gaze that can only come from one thing: royalty. Sniffling, she grasps onto the cheek she had slapped earlier so that Agula does not look away. “I-”

    “I will take you home.”
