Summary
The Sisters part, making space as one of them comes forward.
“This is sister Beatrice. A Proctor at our school in Wallach IX,” the Reverend Mother says. “We’ve determined that she is a sound match for your brother Michael and as requested by your House she is here.”
“My House has made no such request,” Ava raises her chin, but keeps a good grip on the cadence of her tone, “Do not fabricate a story where there is none. Your Proctor is here against my wishes.”
The Sisters barely move—they hardly breathe as the tension settles in the room.

Summary
Every time Beatrice thinks of Ava, she gives her thanks to God. That still counts as faith, doesn’t it? Even if her growing adoration of a woman who came back to life and walks on water borders blasphemy.

Summary
Ava and Beatrice have an arragement: Keep it physical, keep it quiet, and absolutely keep pretending they can't stand each other on shift.
It works. Until it doesn't.
Because fires get out of control, orders get ignored, and when it comes to life and death, Beatrice stops pretending, just for a second.
That's all it takes.
The real problem isn't the job.
It's whatever the hell this is.Bookmarked by lmh24
