Days passed like this for Simon Riley.
There wasn’t a day in Simon’s life that’s gone rogue, it’s always the same routine: Wake up, labour, feed, wash and then the long, dragged-out agony of the ceremony.
For as long as he remembered, Simon never missed one, not one holy ceremony missed since the day his first began. He remembered what it was like, the very first one he participated, how his father held him; his mother shedding silent tears in the back, face illuminated by the fire of the torches; his brother still young, watching with wide, innocent eyes as Simon’s secret was unveiled, brought to plain sight, uncovered just as one would pry open a nacre, his pearl revealed with a spread of legs.
