    “How long have I been out?” Squall asked, nearing the door to listen for any noises outside.

    “It’s been a day” Seifer said. “ And I don’t think they hold rescue missions for corpses, so don’t expect one. You looked pretty dead when you landed. Then the Galbadian soldiers pounced on you.”

    “But I’m not, right?” Squall asked, his resolve wavering suddenly at the sickening realization that if the past several months of his life had been a dream, this could be a dream too. 

    “Not what?” Seifer asked, frowning as Squall’s face paled. “Dead? Are you fucking kidding?”

    “I could be…” Squall said, his voice tight. “I should be, right?”

    “Who the fuck cares if you are?” Seifer snapped, causing Squall to blink and pull back slightly when Seifer approached him. “Dead, alive, it doesn’t matter. You’re here, so deal with it.”

    Seifer. It was undeniably Seifer standing there, sizing him up. Utterly unprepared, Squall froze in place. Having found no resolution to what had happened during the war, the mere mention of the ex-knight's name at an unguarded moment was enough to send his chest clenching. The actual sight of his childhood rival, the man very real and just a few feet away, was far worse. All thoughts of Rinoa were effectively disrupted as Squall stood transfixed, his mind refusing to grapple with the highly unlikely encounter. Any past plans or notions on what he'd do when offered the chance to confront Seifer bled from him as his eyes raked the man in front of him. He didn't feel the expected rage or even relief. His legs wouldn't move. His hands didn't clench into fists. Instead Squall found himself cataloging every single change in the tall blond with a detached attention to detail. Anything to keep his mind from derailing.

    Or the one where Seifer persuades Squall to take drugs, they have mad sex and everything spirals from there as they both have trouble dealing with the repercussions.
