Three minutes

Summary:

It was not a dream. Dean used to watch over his sleep every night, just like an angel.

Work Text:

3:00 AM

Castiel used to wait every night Dean's light footsteps approaching cautiously his bed. Trying to hold his breath . His soft hands accommodating the blanket. When Castiel noticed for the first time the night visit and asked Dean why he was there, the hunter answered that he wanted to check if he was sleeping. Castiel assured him that everything was fine. He invited him to sit on the bed with him, but Dean refused. After three days, Castiel woke up again while Dean was checking him. Same questions , same answers. The next night Castiel waited for the hunter. Dean had brought him a glass of water, because he heard him coughing. Castiel thanked him, and asked again, more insistently, to stay for a while with him. Dean accepted, he sat down, he stayed there for three minutes. Then he wished him goodnight and returned to his own bed. Since that time Dean had accepted the invitation of Castiel every night. They begun to chat quietly, but not when they were sleeping in the same room with Sam in the motel, in that case the remained silent. Castiel used to take a sip of water, Dean used to touch him on the leg or on the shoulder and eventually he went back to bed. Every night they got closer. One night Dean accepted to lay down with Castiel. Only for three minutes. And then more, and more. Firstly only on the same bed, then closer and closer. Firstly just leaning on him, then hugging him, and, in the end, kissing him.

2:51 AM

Castiel woke up and walked silently to the kitchen. He realized that trying to avoid noise was more difficult than he imagined. He admired Dean for having done it so far, every night, without ever disturbing the silence, never to wake up Sam. He reached the kitchen, where he poured a glass of milk for Dean and put a little gingerbread man on a plate. The dish was too big for the cookie , so Castiel replaced it with a smaller one. He checked the clock and left the kitchen, he wanted to anticipate Dean. The door of his room was noisier than Castiel's one, the angel was sure he woke Dean up. But, when he entered the room, he realized he was lucky about that. Dean was still asleep. Castiel put the glass and the dish on the nightstand, and sat down, carefully, on the bed, waiting patiently for the awakening of Dean. Three more minutes.

2:57 AM

Dean's wristwatch played with a slight peep. Dean opened his eyes immediately. He looked surprised the rigid figure sitting on the edge of his bed. It was Castiel. He put a hand on his back and sat down on the bed. While he kissed his cheek, Castiel smiled and handed him the glass of milk, wishing him a very Merry Christmas. Dean drank a sip of milk and then leaned toward, to kiss him on the lips. Castiel asked him if they actually were supposed to eat those funny anthropomorphic cookie. Dean replied that they did not have to eat it, they could also save it. Castiel was silent for a few seconds. Then he announced that the decision on the fate of biscuit man was up to Dean, because it was a gift for him. Dean smiled, and pronounced it saved, at least until breakfast. He took another sip of milk and lay down. Castiel followed him, resting his head on Dean's chest. They stayed like that for three minutes.
