The first time Daigo was shot, it was as if Yayoi was shot herself.
By the third and fourth time (or was this the fifth? She had lost count years ago), she sent a package to Daigo’s hospital room. The box held a bulletproof vest, pilfered from a military surplus store. Inside the box, lay a letter written with her best calligraphy pen.
Wear it.
Once, Daigo remembered Mine quietly requesting that he should get better bodyguards. That was a long time ago.
Kiryu didn’t offer advice.
Telling Daigo to just bear it and keep fighting was not advice, no matter how many stories back that up. Expression as serious as ever, he started to list his own gunshot wounds, a list rivalling Daigo’s.
And no, they would not heal through sheer strength of will. Or through energy drink intake. Or—
Majima dished out his own advice. What Daigo needed was training! Lots of it! How else would he be able to dodge bullets? Majima wouldn’t be there to bail his ass to a hospital so he better be prepared to learn how to dodge ‘em and quick. You know, friendly advice from his right-hand man.
He even knew a guy who would train him with that, honest! He laughed when asked if it was with real bullets. Typical.
Shinada gave him a protection amulet with a self-conscious smile, rubbing the back of his neck. The news caught him on short notice, really! He would’ve bought something better if he had known on payday, not the day after he went out to drink.
Daigo waved the explanation away, accepting the gift. Short and sweet and completely useless, but the sentiment warmed his chest. They had tickets for a baseball game soon. Missing it would disappoint Shinada.
“Again?” Saejima grunted, shaking his head.
In the shadows, the Omi Alliance high-fived each other. Betting money was exchanged by eager hands.
His doctor was getting real tired of this shit, but hey, the pay was good.
Their nurse walked toward a whiteboard the staff had in their break room. With an eraser, she cleared a little box filled with a double digit number. Right after it read: 0 days since Dojima has been shot.
