Daughter of the Valkyrie

Summary:

"We are more than monsters, you and I."

Asa is a gladiator on the isolated planet of Sakaar. For almost as long as she can remember, her life has revolved around her next fight. And with her unique invulnerability, losing is not something she worries about. She has even fought the Grandmaster's beloved Champion and survived . . . which also spells her eternal captivity. For the capricious ruler of Sakaar collects fighters like her as both weapons and curiosities.

When a tall, mysterious stranger who calls himself a god arrives on Sakaar, he is intrigued by Asa. He questions her unknown past and, when revolution comes, gives her the freedom she has dreamed of for years. With Loki's help, Asa believes she can finally unravel the shadows of her past, and so she joins him on Asgard.

But when Ragnarok falls and the two are lost in the far reaches of space, they discover that the truth of Asa's heritage is tangled in the darkness of Loki's mistakes. As they run from the coming storm of Thanos' mad search for infinite power, the two outcasts must face their deepest fears and secrets if they, and the universe, are to survive.

Chapter 1: curio

Chapter Text

“He’s magnificent,” Grandmaster breathed.

In the cell below his viewpoint, his newest acquirement beat against the thick, magnetically-enforced walls. The green creature’s strength was . . . impressive.

The colorful leader of Sakaar turned to the figure at his side, meeting her expectant gaze. Scrapper 412 never failed to deliver quality fighters, but this newest find of hers was something Grandmaster had never seen before.

“How much?” he asked.

“Double my last amount,” she returned instantly, a smirk dancing at the edges of her smart mouth. “And I’d be willing to bet it all on the fact that he’ll smash anyone you throw at him.”

He arched an eyebrow. “Anyone?”

The scrapper’s smirk bloomed into full life at his challenge.

“Anyone but her,” she clarified in good humor. “I’m here to make money, not lose it.”

The walls rattled as the creature below them struck once more, its blows increasing. The scrapper pushed a button on the device on her belt, which was followed by pained choking from the creature as it was electrocuted into unconsciousness.

“You seemed pretty confident about him before,” Grandmaster chuckled, sliding his gaze away in a taunting gesture. He reached up and ran a lazy finger down the blue line tattooed on his chin. “Come on, take a chance! I love you, but really” – he wrinkled his nose – “you’re a bore.”

“That won’t last for long,” she told him, turning on her heel. “I’d give him ten minutes before he comes to.”

“So mysterious,” Grandmaster murmured, watching the retreating figure of the Asgardian. “And feisty.”

He glanced at the hulking figure of the incredible creature sprawled across the worn metal floor. Sooner or later, everything ended up on Sakaar, and Grandmaster was there to pick through the wayward scraps of the universe for the hidden treasures.

Like Asa, his beloved champion.

Like this creature.

Grandmaster smiled, clapping his hands together in excitement and rubbing the palms together in lingering glee. With the arrival of this creature who seemed made up of nothing but unstoppable rage, he finally had a worthy contest for his champion.

“Oh, this will be loads of fun,” he said.
