Work Header

i'll be your gravity (you'll be my oxygen)

Summary:

[set during chapter 71] While they're in Yuu’s old room, Mika notices a hauntingly familiar weapon lying on the desk, which leads the two of them to confront their feelings about ghosts from the past, plans for the future, and each other.
One thing is for sure: Yuu is not the only who has been changing.

Notes:

After Chapter 70 was released, I had the idea for a fic where Yuu and Mika visit Yuu’s old room and Mika sees the gun that Yuu had kept with him from their attempted escape from Sanguinem. But I didn’t get around to writing it, and then Chapter 71 came out, and low and behold, they end up going to Yuu’s old room! Somehow that motivated me to finally write this. I just wanted to explore Mika’s perspective and feelings toward Yuu, how his attitude towards the past and their plans has changed as a result of being around Yuu.

Work Text:

“So this is your old room, huh?” Mika said, hesitantly stepping through the door.

“Yup! Wow, looks like it hasn’t been touched.” Yuu glanced over the room, slid the closet door open to reveal a school uniform and a few other items of clothing.

Mika stared at the bed in the corner, the nightstand, imagined a younger Yuu, alone in the hands of humans who sought only to use him.

“There’s not much here at all.”

Yuu returned to his side. “Hm, I guess not. I never really noticed though, I was too focused on killing vampires and avenging our family, back when I thought you were still dead.”

“‘Never noticed’?”

“I don’t remember much, just wanting revenge.”

“I didn’t realize…”

“It doesn’t matter now though. Back then...I thought I’d never see you again. Yet here you are now, alive and breathing by my side.”

“More or less alive.” Mika hated himself the moment it slipped out, but mental habits were hard to break. “Not a living human anymore.”

“But you are alive.”

“Depends on your definition. I don’t have a heartbeat.”

“What?”

“You didn’t know that?”

“Vampires really don’t have heartbeats then?”

“No. You can feel for yourself, if you don’t believe me.”

“I believe you,” Yuu said, extending a hand anyway and placing it firmly against Mika’s chest, raising his eyebrows in surprise after a few moments.

“See? Nothing.”

“It doesn’t change that I’m happy you’re here with me.”

Mika was silent. Yuu’s hand was still on his chest.

“I will turn you back into a human, and bring Akane and the kids back to life, like I promised.”

“Not if it ends up killing you first.” Bit by bit, it was beginning to slip out.

Mika had seen Yuu stabbed one too many times, seen his body undergo things that should have left him lifeless. He hadn’t let go of the image of Ky Luc’s arm through Yuu’s chest, stopping his beating heart for those few sickening moments. Nor the image of Yuu floating unconscious in the tank at Nagoya, wisps of the seraph awakening clinging to his barely lifeless form.

“Hey, I’m still alive and kickin’.”

“You’re becoming a monster too. You should be dead after the things those humans and Guren have put you through.”

“I’m still here,” he said, more gently, and took Mika’s hand, placed it over his own heart.

Mika wished the first thing to come to his mind had been the peacefulness of knowing Yuu was alive and safe for now.

Instead, his first thought was of the blood the organ was pushing through Yuu’s body.

And, apparently, either he was getting worse at hiding his bloodlust, or Yuu was getting better at detecting it.

Perhaps a combination of both. They were both monsters, after all.

Whatever the case, Yuu was eying him with that look now, the searching gaze and tilted head in attempt to make eye contact.

“I know you cut it short on the ride here because you were nervous and there were people around,” he said, unbuttoning his uniform. “You can drink more so you have enough.”

“Yuu-chan, no.” Mika crossed to the other side of the room to stand in front of the window. He noticed JIDA soldiers hiding atop the nearby buildings. “Hey, you know we’re being watched here,” he said, wary, but still grateful for the change of conversation topic.

“Hm, I know they’re all around. This is the heart of the JIDA territory.”

Mika grimaced. “I know, and that’s why I don’t like us being here. This is where so many of those awful experiments happened - are probably still happening.”

“If you don’t want them to see you drinking from me, I can close the curtains,” Yuu said, brushing past Mika and sliding the curtain shut, darkening the room so only a thin sliver of sunlight cut across the floor.

So much for changing the subject.

“They'll get suspicious, won't they?” Mika nodded towards the drawn curtain.

“They just added four more guards to patrol the entrance of this building. But as long as we're quiet and don't cause a scene we should be fine.”

Mika narrowed his eyes. “You heard all that?”

Yuu shrugged, dramatic and arrogant. “It’s cool, isn’t it?”

“You really are a monster aren't you.”

“I'll be whatever I have to be to save my family.” His words and the earnestness in his voice caused Mika to shiver, not in fear, but in…

Well, he had noticed himself feeling increasingly drawn to Yuu, more and more as the days and weeks and months had passed.

Mika turned away, surveying the room. A glint of gold on the desk in the corner caught his eye.

A painful memory, one encased in shame, cut through his mind.

“Yuu-chan, is that…”

Yuu followed his gaze, and Mika didn’t miss the slight gasp that escaped his lips.

“Oh, the gun.”

Yuu approached it casually, lifted it and balanced the weight of it in his hand. He turned to Mika. “It’s the same one, if that’s what you were wondering.”

Mika went to his side, eyes on the gun, and held out his hand, looking to Yuu in a silent question if he could hold it. Yuu handed it over.

“You kept it all those years,” Mika said.

“Of course I did,” Yuu said. “It was all I had left of you. Little did I know, four years later I’d be standing here with you in person.” He leaned his head against Mika’s shoulder as Mika studied the weapon in his hand.

Mika recalled when he’d last seen this gun, the last few sounds he’d heard as a human. The gunshot, Yuu’s voice by his ear, “I’ve finally found a family” , followed by one of the most grief-stricken screams he’d ever heard, echoing from the direction Yuu had escaped.

“Mika?”

Yuu’s voice shook him from his thoughts. Mika's jaw was clenched tightly, his gloved hand squeezing the gun in a death grip.

He blinked, but there were no tears to blink away. He exhaled, something that might have been a humorless laugh, were it not so laden with self-disgust.

“Hey…” Yuu began.

“I know,” Mika said. “We’re past all that now.”

“It was hard seeing them back in Osaka.”

“For me the worst part wasn’t that,” he said, regretting it as he spoke it because there was no reason for him to be saying these things, but words kept tumbling out. “It was so wrong. I felt…”

He took a breath.

“It was like I felt nothing. Our family, how could I see them like that and not...I should have been crying right along with you, Yuu-chan.”

“Mika.”

He almost continued, what’s wrong with me? , but he wasn’t allowed the luxury of that question. He knew exactly what was wrong, and it wouldn’t do to complain about it anymore, especially when Yuu had made his promise already to turn him back - ridiculous and probably hopeless though it was.

He sighed, collecting his thoughts. “But, seeing you weep over them, it reminded me what’s most important to me, and what I’m living for.”

Yuu-chan, when you cry, I feel sadness, and when you smile, I feel warmth. Either way, I’m drawn to you.

He set the gun back down on the desk. Yuu took his hand, squeezing it assuringly.

“And I will bring them back.”

Mika gave him a tiny, exasperated smile. “You’re so certain.”

“I can do anything with you by my side.” Yuu brought their intertwined hands to his face, brushing his lips against Mika’s knuckles, and Mika silently wished his gloves weren’t there to separate. “Just promise you’ll stay with me?”

Mika exhaled shakily. Gestures like this weren’t a new development, but they were becoming more frequent and, what was the word, intense for him?

He felt himself blush, turned his head to the side and smiled helplessly. “Yuu-chan, you’re just...too much sometimes.”

“Eh?”

“An idiot, and sometimes just too much.”

“Too much what? It was a fair question!”

Mika sighed and pulled Yuu into an embrace to hide his own embarrassment. “Too much Yuu-chan,” he grumbled into his shoulder. “It’s not a bad thing.”

Yuu hugged him back, arms wrapping around him swiftly, naturally. “A good thing?”

“It’s definitely something.”

“Stop being so vague, you idiot.”

Mika laughed, and squeezed him tighter. “I’m staying with you, even though this plan is dangerous, and will probably backfire in all kinds of terrible ways, could get us all killed, could wipe out the remainder of the world -”

“I get it I get it, that’s great! You’re so nice, Mika.”

“Yes, me, the nice guy who disses your plan. If you really appreciated it you’d reconsider.”

“I don’t need to, I know what I have to do.”

“Then I guess I can’t stop you. So I’m going with you.”

Yuu pulled back and held Mika’s face between his hands. “Thank you, Mika. I mean it. It makes me so happy that you’re with me here.”

It was like this every time they had this conversation. Yet every time, it stressed Mika out a little less. He figured it could be related to the fading humanity, the onset of chronic vampiric indifference.

Yes, this could fuck the world over, but I can’t find it in me to care anymore .

Which would be disconcerting, except every time they had this talk, he felt more human than ever.

He drew Yuu close again; they continued to hold each other.

Perhaps it was childish nostalgia.

I’ll kill all those vampires and we’ll be free!

Yuu’s boldness and hope held just as much sway over him as ever.

I’ll turn you back into a human and bring back our family!

“Yuu-chan, you make me not want to give up.”

Yuu’s pleased hum told Mika that he’d begun speaking his thoughts aloud.

“Not only do I get to be in my old room with Mika, but now he’s praising me too?” Yuu mused. “Best day ever!”

“I wasn’t praising you,” Mika chuckled.

“You were.”

“Was not.”

“Totally were.”

“Why would I be complimenting someone who comes up with such stupid plans?”

“It’s not stupid, the army does experiments that can help us turn you back!”

“Shh, Yuu-chan, they could be listening in on us for all we know.”

“I don’t care. I want everyone to know.” A confident smirk spread across his face as he stepped back and called out loudly, “Hey, everyone! Mika’s my most precious family, and I’m gonna turn him back into a human and -”

“Yuu-chan, stop!” Mika said, laughing despite himself as he placed a hand over Yuu’s mouth.

Yuu took his wrist, kissed the inside of it, and interlaced their fingers. “I know things have gotten crazy lately, and the army has done some bad things, but I haven’t forgotten what we’re here to do.”

As he spoke, Yuu led them to his bed and sat down, once again loosening his shirt collar. “Until we achieve that though, I want you to take what you need from me.”

Mika swallowed. “Yuu-chan, please.”

“I mean it.”

“Why are you so insistent about this? We’re trying to change this about me, yet you always seem…”

“Hm?”

“You seem excited for me to do this to you,” he mumbled.

“Does it help you?”

Mika smiled. “You do help, Yuu-chan. In more ways than you know.”

Yuu searched his face, eyes inquisitive, pouting slightly as he tried to puzzle out what Mika was talking about.

Finally Mika leaned in towards Yuu’s neck. “Thank you,” he whispered against his skin, feeling Yuu shiver, savoring that soft sound of his anticipatory gasp. Mika kissed his pulse, gently, reverently.

“Mika?”

“Can you lean back, please?”

Yuu scooted up the bed, reclined against the pillow and Mika settled against him, resting his head on his chest instead of against his neck.

“Like this?” Yuu said, confused.

Mika sighed contentedly as Yuu’s voice resonated deeply against Mika’s ear pressed to his chest, the soothing sound of his heartbeat wonderfully constant.

And for once he realized that his thoughts of blood and his desire for Yuu’s safety and happiness could coexist.

“I just wanted to listen to yours for a bit,” Mika murmured, absently tracing circles with his finger around a button on Yuu’s uniform.

Yuu’s hand found its way into Mika’s hair, gentle strokes easing the ever-present tension in Mika’s shoulders. He relished how normal it felt, how in another world, where they were both human and living lives as normal teenagers, perhaps they could be doing this same thing.

He was brought back to the present reality, one of monsters and destruction and immortality, when Yuu’s finger traced along his ear.

“Yuu-chan,” Mika said, trying to sound admonishing, but the soft purr beginning in the back of his throat betrayed him.

“I know, I know you don’t like them, but I think they’re really cool.”

“They’re ugly.” He suppressed a shiver. He was too sensitive there, it felt too good.

“Nothing about you is ugly.”

“Vampires are ugly, and I’m a vampire.” The words came to his lips readily, thoughtlessly, rote. And though they were true, Mika hated himself for saying them aloud, knowing the reason why he said them; he knew how Yuu would react.

Selfishly, he wanted to hear it from Yuu’s own lips.

“No, no, no.” Yuu shifted their bodies on the bed so Mika was face to face with Yuu’s stern expression.

“No I’m not a vampire?” Mika laughed nervously.

“You’re Mika first, my Mika.” Yuu’s voice was soft, dropping lower on the second utterance of his name. His eyes flickered downwards, and Mika gasped quietly when Yuu leaned forward, pressing their lips together.

Mika’s eyes instantly slid shut, pulled back into the fantasy from moments before.

He’d begun imagining these things, life as a normal human with Yuu, around the first time Yuu had kissed him, after three months reunited. Their physical touches had become more frequent leading up to that moment, lingering hugs, soft face caresses, holding hands, Yuu sleeping against Mika’s shoulder or with his head in his lap.

The first kiss had been a natural progression from those things, as were the many kisses that had followed it, though it had introduced a new element of blushes and flustered glances to their interactions.

Yuu pulled back a few centimeters, green eyes in a haze, lifting to search Mika’s expression, a silent question to continue.

Mika leaned forward in answer, savoring the warm touch of Yuu’s hand on his cheek and his lips on his own.

“Your Mika?” he whispered when they broke once more. Shamelessly he asked for it now, those words like honey in their sweetness, more deeply satisfying even than the blood his vampire body craved. Such was the effect Yuu had on him.

“My Mika.”

“My Yuu-chan,” he said, thrilled at the sound of the words together, the sensation of speaking them, lips, tongue, the push of air, together forming something so precious. “My Yuu-chan,” he repeated, rewarded with the beautiful sound of soft laughter from Yuu, just before he kissed him once more.

“I’m yours, Mika.”

Everything about Yuu made him feel warm, and he wanted to be closer, closer, closer still. He was straddling Yuu’s lap on the bed, stroking the side of his face.

“Can I take them off?” Yuu said.

“Hm?”

Yuu took his gloved hand, and Mika nodded, raising an eyebrow when Yuu put the tip of Mika’s middle finger to his teeth.

“What’s that look for?” Yuu questioned.

Mika smirked.

“What? I’ve seen you do this before and...you always look so cool when you do so I wanted to try,” Yuu muttered indignantly.

“I’m not stopping you.”

Maybe he should have.

Something about the image of the tip of his glove caught between Yuu’s teeth, the subtle jerk of his head when he tugged it off...it did things to Mika’s brain and he didn’t know how to react.

Yuu’s thumb stroked his now bare knuckles as he removed the other glove in a similar manner, kissing the exposed skin of his palm after he’d done so.

“There,” Yuu said, leaning his cheek into Mika’s hand. “I wanted to feel you touch me.”

Mika smiled and closed his eyes, leaning their foreheads together. He brushed his fingertips against Yuu’s soft lips, skin tingling, then slid his hands back into Yuu’s hair, down his neck, pulse hot against his skin.

This time when Yuu kissed him it was different. He made some low, desperate sound and tilted his head, and Mika shivered in delight when he felt the wetness of Yuu’s tongue glide against his lips.

He peeked his eyes open to see Yuu had done the same. Mika closed his again and leaned forward, inviting Yuu to continue.

This was something that had only begun a couple weeks ago, and it had surprised Mika at first just how okay he was with someone else’s tongue in his mouth. The first time he’d experienced the sensation, of course, it hadn’t been Yuu.

Again, one of those last sensory memories of being human. He’d barely been conscious enough to register what Krul was doing to him. The strange intrusion, the taste of blood, then the searing pain of transformation, the horror at the irreversibility of so many actions that night.

Actions that Yuu was determined to prove reversible.

No, not reversible. They couldn’t change what had happened. Only the permanence of some of the outcomes.

A dull ache began throbbing in his fangs, ready for the hot blood literally on the tip of his tongue.

Another unfortunate aspect of Mika’s life: how much Yuu loved to play with fire.

He was running his tongue along Mika’s fangs, testing gently, and then with more pressure.

“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing.”

“It’s worth a try.”

“You seriously want me to try drinking from...from your tongue?”

“Y-yes.”

“Why?”

“...just, because.”

“I don’t even know if it would work, tongues don’t really bleed heavily, do they?”

“There’s only one way to find out.” And with that, Yuu scraped his tongue harshly along Mika’s fang, causing a small amount of blood to pool on the spot.

Mika’s tongue moved on its own, pushing the blood-mixed saliva to the back of his ever-parched throat.

Yuu pulled back, swiped his tongue with his index finger and studied it.

“Damn it,” he cursed at the barely pink-tinted spit on his finger. “It was such a good idea too.”

“Like I said, tongues don’t bleed much I guess. And you heal too quickly.”

Yuu pouted, but quickly recovered. “That’s okay, it still works from the neck!”

“I don’t need to drink.”

“But you want to.”

Mika rolled his eyes, leaned forward and kissed him. “This is all I really want.”

He felt smug when Yuu sighed and kissed him back; winning over Yuu’s stubbornness was no small feat.

And yet, he still felt Yuu’s hands fidgeting between them as they kissed, undoing the buttons between their chests as if Mika was going to feed anyway.

“I told you I don’t need to -”

“I’m not,” Yuu interjected. “I just...like I said, I want to feel you touch me.”

Mika cupped the side of his face. “I am touching you.”

“More.” Yuu pulled Mika’s hand down from his face, guiding it to the exposed skin of his chest.

Mika felt the steady beat beneath his palm, and swallowed. “More, huh…”

Yuu was looking for eye contact, eyes wide and pleading, innocent despite the potential implications behind his request.

“You’re so warm,” Mika muttered, unable to take the tension.

“Mhm, see?” Yuu finished undressing his top half so his white button-up hung loosely about his arms.

“H-hold on, Yuu-chan, what are you…” Mika stuttered out and trailed off, distracted by the sight of Yuu.

He couldn’t deny he liked it, seeing Yuu in this state of semi-undress, and so eager for Mika.

“You too?” Yuu tugged at Mika’s uniform jacket in question.

Mika ducked his head down, smiling in sheer giddiness.

It wasn’t the first time he’d felt this way, but it’d never been this intense, the heady rush that would sometimes come over him while in Yuu’s presence, when he held Yuu’s full attention.

He began undoing his coat, lifting the cape from his shoulder as he cast a glance over his shoulder at the door, at the drawn curtains. He wanted to be ready for any attack the JIDA could potentially launch on them.

“Let me help,” Yuu said, getting started on the buttons of his black shirt.

“Don’t see what you’re so eager for, Yuu-chan,” Mika said, enjoying Yuu’s fingers fumbling to undo his shirt.

If the JIDA hadn’t attacked them yet, perhaps they wouldn’t for a little while longer...

“There.” Yuu pushed the clothing from his shoulders, wrapped his arms around his back and pulled him close, so Mika’s chest was flush against the side of Yuu’s face.

Mika blinked, hands falling awkwardly to his sides. Yuu sighed contentedly, warm breath tickling Mika’s skin.

Hesitantly, Mika brought his hands to the back of Yuu's head, bent over and kissed the top. Yuu nuzzled closer, nudging at Mika’s chest playfully until he pushed them over sideways onto the bed, giggling. Yuu looked down at Mika as he ran a hand down his chest and stomach.

“I’m not as warm as you are,” Mika said before Yuu could comment.

“Do you miss being warm?”

Mika chewed his lower lip in thought, studied Yuu’s body looming over him, the dip and curve of muscle developed through years of training. Muscle that would continue to develop, a body that, unlike his own, would continue to grow.

“Yes.”

Yuu regarded him, eyes sad and sympathetic.

Then he flopped down on top of Mika again, chest to chest, face in the crook of Mika’s neck.

“Yuu-chan?”

“I’ll be warmth for the both of us then.” Yuu kissed his neck, breath hot on his skin, ironically causing Mika to shiver.

Mika sighed and embraced him, tightly. “Thank you, Yuu-chan. You know, I…”

“Hm? What is it, Mika?”

“I’m glad I got you back, too.” Yuu-chan, I don’t know what I’d do without you. I need you.

He wouldn’t let himself say it aloud. He didn’t want to burden Yuu anymore than he already did.

Yuu laughed softly, and when he pulled back, Mika saw he was blushing a beautiful pink.

“You really mean it, Mika?”

“Of course I do, you idiot.”

“Say it again.”

Mika rolled his eyes, amused. “Why do you always have to push things, Yuu-chan?”

“Please?”

Mika sighed in defeat.

“I’ll let you drink from me if you say it again,” Yuu said temptingly.

“I don’t think you understand how bargaining works.”

“...pretty please?”

Mika wrapped his arms around his neck, whispered into his ear, “I’m glad I have you, Yuu-chan.”

Yuu hummed pleasantly, nosed along Mika’s neck. Something in the air between them shifted, and Yuu suddenly felt heavier atop him. Perhaps that was because he was pressing down onto him, squirming, searching for friction.

Mika’s breath caught, an overwhelming desire to be as close to Yuu as possible coming over him, consuming his thoughts.

“Yuu-chan,” he murmured, eyes squeezed shut as he inhaled the scent at his neck. “Yuu-chan…”

“Mika.” Yuu’s voice was somewhat strained, breathy. “Mika, can we…I want…”

Mika was distracted by the scent, the pulse, obsessed with nuzzling it, the feeling of safety and wholeness being surrounded by Yuu like this.

Jeez, Mika was purring again, wasn’t he?

“Can we do something, Mika?” Yuu sounded oddly nervous.

“Hm?”

“It’s okay if you say no, but, can we get under the blankets? And…”

Yuu was tugging on Mika’s pants, hardness between his legs pressing against Mika’s thigh.

“I wanna be close,” Yuu whispered, urgently. “...’n feel you all over...”

Control was slipping from Mika’s grasp, his every move being dictated by the mutual pull between him and Yuu, hesitation dissolving with every labored breath.

And this, too, could be them, in another world, in normal lives, eager and longing to explore each other’s bodies, but not quite sure what they were doing yet.

So he moved with Yuu as they struggled out of the rest of their clothing in a tangle of boots and pant legs. They lay on their sides, blushing and shy and unclothed, beneath the covers of Yuu’s bed. Yuu’s arm draped over Mika’s waist, pulling him flush against him.

“Is this okay?” Yuu muttered, a touch of desperation in his tone as he pressed his forehead to Mika’s, searching his eyes pleadingly.

“Yuu-chan,” Mika breathed. “I don’t think you understand. I’ll follow you into anything, I only want to be with you.” He subconsciously pushed his hips against Yuu’s, addicted to the heat that radiated from him. “If it’s with you, if it’s for you, I want it all.”

He barely managed to finish his sentence before Yuu captured his lips in a passionate kiss.

“If it’s... not too much...,” Yuu said between kisses, “then, bite me. You don’t have to drink if you don’t want to, but...I want to feel you…"

Mika hummed in assent, mind in a haze as he licked and kissed the patch of skin on Yuu’s neck, then slowly sank in his fangs.

He felt a rush of that odd giddiness once more at the noise Yuu made in that moment, deep, somewhere between a pleased growl and a low, desperate whine.

“Yes, Mika, yes .”

Yuu no longer tensed up at the initial bite like he used to. Mika wasn’t sure whether to attribute it to his body getting used to being bitten, or Yuu’s own fading humanity - if it was ever there to begin with.

That was another weight on his mind.

Yuu-chan, what are you? And what will they do with you because of what you are?

The glide of Yuu’s hands up his spine, through his hair, made those questions feel somehow less important. Because the Yuu in front of him was all that mattered, and Mika would protect him, and follow him, to the ends of the earth.

Mika did end up indulging, just a little bit, the feeling of Yuu’s life force flowing hot and steady into his own veins adding to the mounting pleasure between them. He was vaguely aware of Yuu making some sound deep in his throat, affectionate, adoring, and then he was petting Mika’s ears again.

This time Mika didn’t protest. He realized a few moments later, with a tinge of embarrassment and annoyance, that he was still purring.

“I may not get to hear your heartbeat,” Yuu whispered, hips still rutting against Mika’s. “But you still make some pretty cool sounds, Mika.”

Jeez, what an idiot. Pretty cool sounds .

Mika smiled despite himself.

Maybe the purring wasn’t so bad.

When he finished feeding, he cleaned the bite wound with his tongue, watching both mesmerized and a bit disturbed as Yuu’s skin closed together again, slowly, but noticeably, before his eyes.

Mika ran his finger over the skin.

Yuu flinched beneath him. “That tickles.”

“You heal so quickly.”

“Don’t be jealous, you heal really fast too.”

“You know that’s not what I was getting at,” he sighed in exasperation. Would the experiments ever stop? Was there any end in sight for them?

“You worry too much, Mika.” Yuu cupped the side of his face, ran his thumb just below and along Mika’s lower lip, probably wiping away any blood he’d missed.

“Sometimes I wonder,” Mika mused. “If we weren’t in this mess and the world wasn't like this, what other trouble you’d be getting into that I’d have to nag you for.”

Yuu beamed at that. “Probably for driving too fast. Or, let’s see, maybe spending all my money on a really fast car?”

“For once I think I agree with you, Yuu-chan.”

“You’d still stay with me though?”

“Would you listen to me for once?” Mika chuckled.

“Mm, yeah I would!”

Mika narrowed his eyes. “You’re just saying that to appease me.”

“I’d drive you around in my nice car too.”

“To show off to me, you mean.”

“Yeah, I’d want to show off to you,” Yuu laughed. “You’d be totally impressed too. You’d think, ‘Whoa, Yuu-chan’s so amazing with his super cool car!’”

“You’re ridiculous.” Mika rolled his eyes and shoved at Yuu’s shoulder. They broke into laughter, comfortable and familiar, and this dissolved into more soft kisses. Before long they crossed the line they'd been walking between hesitant and needy, touches warm and indulgent as they took their intimacy further.

Mika treasured it, knew that he would for the rest of his life, this moment with Yuu, feeling temporarily separate from the rest of the world, fumbling and awkward but together as they sought release in the warmth created between them.

They came down from their highs, side by side in a haze of sweat and heavy breaths, lingering traces of pleasure thrumming in their fingertips.

“Mika,” Yuu murmured between their kisses, slow and sweet in the afterglow, “I promise I'll make your heart beat again.”

Before Mika could reply, however, Yuu suddenly lifted his head, alert and listening, sliding his arm protectively around Mika’s shoulders.

“What is it?” Mika whispered, listening closely as he surveyed the room, calculating how quickly he could dress and rearm himself. He picked up on two soldiers now patrolling the floor they were on.

He made eye contact with Yuu.

“It’s probably fine,” Yuu said.

Mika huffed. The reality of their situation set in again, and he was on his guard once more. He sat up and reached for his clothes.

“We don’t have to-” Yuu began.

Mika held a finger to Yuu's lips, effectively shushing him. “You say they do experiments here that could help us?”

Yuu cocked his head. “Yeah?”

“Maybe we should go find the laboratory then, instead of sitting around waiting.”

“We weren’t just ‘sitting around’...” Yuu mumbled.

Mika blushed at the feeling of Yuu’s hand tracing up his leg. “Well...yes, but,” Mika tilted his head towards the door. “It’s...sort of hard to focus when they’re getting so close, don’t you think?”

Yuu followed his gaze, then shrugged. “I don’t care. But, I am curious to see the laboratory too, now that you mention it.”

They helped each other dress, then stood before the still closed curtain. Yuu slipped his hand into Mika’s, leaned over and kissed his cheek.

“Ready?”

Mika smiled. “Lead the way, Yuu-chan.”

Notes:

and then they busted through the window and kicked some JIDA ass :D

So, no heartbeat? But blushing? It's more likely than you think (as in, it's canon. Mika blushes around Yuu all the fuckin time but there is no heartbeat to pump the blood to his face? How work? What are vampire physiology? idk bruh i'm just here to see them get the happiness they deserve. also I'm physically incapable of writing a mikayuu fic with no blushing.)

Anyway, thanks for reading! As always, comments and kudos are greatly appreciated.
