Chapter Text

There's nothing Jungkook finds more boring than the social events that the DWMA hold for them to find partners. It's only been a few months since he's started the academy, but they hold these things like every two weeks. It's mandatory attendance too, the academy wanting everyone to find a partner as soon as possible. Truthfully, he’s quite eager too so it’s not like he would ditch even if he could. Jungkook feels stuffy in his black suit, still not use to it despite all the times he's worn it. It’s a good thing that the school pays for their dry cleaning or he would have been bankrupt three events ago.
"You ready to go?" Hoseok, his oldest roommate and the only Meister in their room, asks.
Jungkook sighs while running a hand through his brunette hair. "Yeah, I guess."
Hoseok gives him a dimpled smile and a reassuring pat, "Stay positive. It's only been a few months, and I have a good feeling about tonight." Suddenly Jungkook feels guilty, Hoseok has spent years looking for a partner and yet he is still as hopeful and patient as the first time they met.
A door behind them opens and closes, Jimin comes walking out of the bathroom with slightly more glamorous makeup than usual. His eyes are swiped with a sparkling red, dark brown is blended into his crease, and there is black lining his lid. It's noticeable, but subtle in a way that it won't alarm the other students around them. They have students from all over the world attending the academy and most of them aren't used to boys wearing makeup. Jungkook and Hoseok simply have a darker brown in their crease and their eyes lined with black, truthfully they were feeling too lazy to do anything more. Being slightly taller than his friend, Jungkook pats Jimin on the head with a sharp grin, "You look great."
Jimin pouts as he swats Jungkook's hand and fixes his black hair. "I'm your Hyung, you stupid brat."
"But how can a hyung be so tiny?"
"I should have left you behind when I had the chance."
Hoseok laughs at their bickering. He grabs them both by the shoulders, "Okay children, calm down, it's time to go."

As soon as the trio walks in, Jungkook can feel waves resonating throughout the room and down his spine. It shouldn't be possible, seeing as Jungkook isn't a Meister and doesn't have the capability to perceive souls. But he can indeed sense the waves dancing in sync with the piano music that is playing. The brunette looks over at the other two, sees that they are just as amazed as he is.
"This soul is beautiful," Hoseok’s eyes are darting around in awe. The soul is big enough to envelope the whole room, it's a bright yet soft blue, and its waves come out in music notes that fly gently in the room before disappearing.
"His name is Min Yoongi," an amused voice from their right tells them. They turn to face a fellow Korean male, obviously older than them with light pink hair and plump lips. He smiles softly, "I can't see it, but Namjoon-ah says his soul is like a bright sea blue, and that it comes out in music notes. Is that what you see?" The pinkette asks Hoseok who nods in return. "I'm Kim Seokjin by the way," he bows slightly, "Best friends with the pianist. Death himself asked Yoongi-ah to preform and had the piano made specifically to amplify his wavelength so that everyone could feel it. Amazing right?" They all nod eagerly. Jungkook can’t help the smile tugging at his lips, it’s obvious that Seokjin is very proud of Yoongi in an almost fatherly way. "Well I gotta go find my little brothers, who knows what Tae has dragged Joon into." He smiles at them kindly and says goodbye with another bow.
The trio stand there for a while, letting themselves just enjoy the atmosphere. It's Hoseok who snaps them out of their daze with a clap, "Alright! It’s time to mingle, my friends."
They go their separate ways, talking to other students in accented English, the so-called universal language that they've all been learning since they were children. Jungkook has some polite conversations that quickly wilt when they realize he’s a weapon, not a meister. He finds himself walking towards the center of the crowd, whereas usually he just lingers on the edges. The soul that has been making his own hum pleasantly gradually quietens down, so slowly that he hardly notices when it stops. Usually Jungkook finds the sound of hundreds of people chattering to be slightly irritating, but now it just seems peaceful.
He holds his breath when the crowd in front of the piano part. Jungkook first sees a fluffy mop of black hair with blue accents. Min Yoongi is pale with pouty lips and dark, triangular-shaped eye. He has silver earrings and rings that give him a certain look of elegance. Jungkook can’t help but think that the ravenette is well, hot. He’s only eighteen so excuse him for thinking with his dick a little bit. Even so, he's more fascinated by Min Yoongi’s soul than anything else. It's calming in a way that reminds Jungkook of the seas back in Busan.
Given the purpose of these functions, the brunette doesn't allow himself to get shy. There are certain times when you have to overcome your fears, after all. So he doesn’t let himself to think twice before he steps forward, "Min Yoongi?" Said boy turns around to face Jungkook, giving him a curious nod in confirmation. Jungkook smiles brilliantly, like if he had received some particularly good news. "I met your friend, ah, Kim Seokjin? I don't think I've ever seen you guys around here before though."
Yoongi tilts his head, "Monday’s going to be our first day of classes.” It isn’t uncommon for Meisters and Weapons in South Korea to delay their entrance into the DWMA once they graduate from secondary school. Getting a general education is required, but the DWMA serves as an alternative to the mandatory military service and university so people aren’t exactly eager to join.
Jungkook latches on to the topic of conversation, shifts closer, “Were you waiting for someone? My best friend Jimin delayed his entrance so we could start together.” He makes sure his tone is light and friendly, in order to encourage Yoongi to talk.
“Jin-hyung had to delay his entrance since him and Tae are twin weapons.” Yoongi shrugs like if the information isn’t particularly important, but Jungkook knows that there hasn’t been twin weapons at the DWMA for years. “Joon and I didn't want to leave them behind, so we delayed ours too. Then Tae was having trouble with English and we all took a few more months to help him." His voice is soft and deep, as calming as his soul.
Usually these things are done more subtlety, people chat a little more before they pop the question. But Jungkook hasn’t really been thinking in terms of appropriateness since he stepped in to the venue, so fuck it right? He blurts, “So are you a Demon Weapon or a Meister?”
A smirk tugs at the curled end of Yoongi’s lip, “A Meister. You’re a weapon, right?”
Jungkook’s lips form an ‘o’ before he huffs out a laugh, “Damn soul perception.”
Yoongi chuckles dryly, “Well I didn’t spend all that time doing nothing...Do you want to know how your soul looks?” Jungkook nods eagerly. Yoongi closes his eyes briefly before opening them again, he’s glaring in concentration, an all seeing glint in his eye. “Your soul is a bright pink, almost red, don’t think I’ve ever seen that color before. It moves around briskly, it likes to keep busy. Your wavelength...it feels like it’s singing. It’s like a hum of a voice, but I can’t make out the words.” The older snaps himself out of his daze before looking away in embarrassment.
Jungkook feels himself blush, “My friend Hoseok is a Meister, I don’t think he’s ever told me that before.”
Yoongi hums, “Have you ever asked? Your soul can reveal a lot of things about you, usually Meister’s won’t look without permission.”
“Well,” Jungkooks smiles shyly, “does my soul looks like one you can work with?”
Yoongi grins, “Hmm...They say dancing is good for matching wavelengths. Want to test it out?” He stretches out a pale hand, Jungkook takes it happily.

The N.O.T. curriculum is basically more general education with P.E. and one specialized class. It’s boring, Jungkook kind of wants to die.
“Did you hear?” A girl in front of him whispers, “That pale Korean dude got taken to the Nurse again. Heard he collapsed during the sprint.” The girl next to her rolls her eyes, “This is the third time he’s been to the Nurse, you sure he’s a meister? I feel bad for his weapon.”
Jungkook snorts, the girls turn around and their eyes widen in realization. He glares, “Stop talking about people you don’t know.” He turns his head away from them in a snappish manner, starts drumming his fingers on the desk in irritation. Seokjin’s and Tae’s disappearance after their last class suddenly makes sense now. He’s angry that they didn’t tell him, again. Isn’t Jungkook Yoongi’s partner? Aren’t they all friends? Not that they’ve really had the opportunity to hang out but he’d like to think they are.
Next to him, Jimin grabs his hand and runs a thumb soothingly over it. He can’t truly sympathize with Jungkook but he feels bad for being a bit useless. Apparently there isn’t much he can do, even though he’s Namjoon’s weapon.
In their next period, Hoseok slams a book onto the table. He throws himself into the chair and huffs in frustration. Jungkook looks at him questioningly. “People don’t know how to shut the fuck up,” the older growls.
Jungkook shrugs, he hasn’t gotten the chance to see what Yoongi can do. They’ve probably only had four or five conversations since the event, and the N.O.T. curriculum doesn’t require them to practice together since it’s mainly about getting them fit until they can prove they are suited for E.A.T. classes. Truthfully, he’s starting to think that Min Yoongi isn’t as great as his soul wavelengths made him out to be.
It must show on his face because Hoseok looks at him carefully. "You know," he starts, "Yoongi-hyung isn't very good at conversations or socializing in general, he doesn't approach people first. He's good at faking it though. He's the kind of person that you have to annoy a little for them to open up. He sticks to the Kims like glue, but they encourage him to make more friends. It may seem like you're giving more than you're getting but it's worth it. Jungkook-ah, this is one of those times where you need to pick up your courage...Hyung has a lot of faith in you and talks highly about you, even with the few times you've actually talked. It would make him sad if he found out you didn't feel the same for him. So please take the time to get to know him before you judge him. You'll see then that he's not only as beautiful as his soul, but he's a genius too."

Jungkook has never been more amazed by anybody than he has by Yoongi. It's Hoseok who tipped him off about Yoongi's late night practices, knowing that Jungkook needed another push.
He sees the ravenette making his way through the obstacle course swiftly, the blue lights of the bullets never missing their shot. Jungkook is reminded of their first conversation where Yoongi had said he didn't spend his gap years doing nothing. Taehyung and Seokjin transform back into their human forms. So for a second Jungkook thinks they're done, but then enemies pop up again. Yoongi controls his wavelength to send a pulse through the cardboard right in front of him. Seokjin grabs Taehyung's hand and he transforms immediately. Seokjin shoots at the 'enemies' behind Yoongi. Then when Yoongi reaches out his hand, he uses it as leverage to do a black flip while transforming. Yoongi catches both of the Kims before they can fall on to the ground. The trio continue doing the course in this tag team approach, the two weapons switching around from using one another.
Seeing them in actions makes him wonder why the Meister had decided to partner up with Jungkook, when it seems like the twin weapons and Yoongi work together flawlessly. Something dark and ugly ignites in his chest, he smothers it before any thoughts can occur. When the three friends finally do finish, Yoongi is smiling at them widely, gums and teeth on display. It's the cutest thing Jungkook has probably ever seen and he suddenly aches to have it directed at him. He resolves to talk to his Meister tomorrow, allows himself one more glance before leaving.

Seokjin is calmly making his way to his seat next to Yoongi in their history class when he is not so gently pushed aside. He looks over to see Jungkook cheekily smiling in his usual seat. Yoongi's cheeks are a bit flushed, and Jin is filled with the desire to coo than to be mad at Jungkook. He smiles encouragingly at Jungkook before going to go sit with Hoseok. Taehyung walks in, sees what's happening then wiggles his eyebrows at the pair and joins Seokjin. Jungkook makes a light-hearted threat at Taehyung by jokingly raising his fist.
"You..." Jungkook snaps his attention to the pale boy beside him, his sharp eyes not looking at his, and cheeks a dark rose. "You were there...last night."
'Yoongi-hyung isn't very good at conversations or socializing in general, he doesn't approach people first.'
"I was," the brunette smiles enough for his slightly oversized front teeth to show, "You're amazing, ya know?"
Yoongi shakes his head, "I need to work harder...It's Jin-hyung and Tae that are great." There's a story there, Jungkook is sure, except he won't push. Although he's happy to know that they're both trying to gather their courage. Within time, he's sure, they will be able to depend on one another as partners and as friends.
