Dear Roderich

Summary:

During the Cold War, when Gilbert stayed at Ivan’s house, he wrote letters to Roderich. He never sent them; he kept them in a shoe box instead.
Roderich recently found them.

Updated 21 December 2019: Rating changed to M due to references to suicide and abuse.

Notes:

This is my fist Hetalia fanfiction as well as my first fanficion ever. This being the prologue, it's much shorter than the rest of the chapters.
Please read, and enjoy.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Summary:

This story has been updated for continuity and for more historical accuracy. As per usual, I'll put translations in the end notes as well as commentary on history as I see fit.

Chapter Text

After the end of World War Two, as a part of the Potsdam Conference, Germany was split into East and West. While Ludwig remained in West Germany, Gilbert was taken to Russia, for what Ivan called “protection”, forcing him to leave his family indefinitely. Eventually, the pain of missing his family made Gilbert homesick, leading him to ask the Baltic States what he should do. They suggested sending letters to his family, so they could at least have some contact.
He never did.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Gilbert took his things from Russia and moved back into Ludwig’s house. Among the things he brought back were years of letters addressed to Ludwig and Roderich which he hid in a shoe box on a shelf in Ludwig’s spare room, hoping no one would find them.
Someone did.
