Chapter Text
Midoriya’s POV:
Bakugo stormed out of the classroom and down the stairs. Midoriya looked up in surprise, guilt washing over him making the headache that he had worse. Worrying always gave Midoriya headaches (although this one was a little worse than usual). Bakugo was always in control of himself. Even when he got angry, he knew exactly what he was doing, he just didn’t care. When Midoriya revealed his new quirk, it had completely thrown Bakugo off. On top of that, he had beaten Bakugo; failure was not something that Bakugo knew how to handle.
“Kaachan!” Midoriya shouted chasing after Bakugo.
“Aah?” Bakugo stopped and turned around.
“I-” Midoriya started.
I haven’t even told my mom yet. He thought to himself.
“I need to tell you something.” He finally managed to choke out looking at anything but Bakugo.
“I- I wasn’t lying to you. I wasn’t hiding this quirk from you. I obtained this quirk from somebody else…” Midoriya started fearfully glancing at Bakugo’s expression. “I can’t tell you who.” He continued quickly.
I need to tell him this. He is so amazing and doesn’t deserve to be lied to no matter our past. I can’t be the one to hold him back. He will become an amazing hero one day. Maybe even the best. I can’t lie to him. We have known each other for too long and I like him too much for that. I like him… Midoriya paused in his explanation with a jolt I like him. Oh my God I like him. I have a crush on Kaachan. Oh my God, I have always had a crush on Kaachan.
Midoriya shook his head trying to calm his racing thoughts and bury the life changing information he just discovered. Think about this later, right now you need to make Kaachan feel better. Bakugo was staring at him with a disbelieving expression on his face.
“I swear it’s true,” Midoriya continued. “Even if it sounds like something out of a comic book…!”
Bakugo stood there looking stunned.
“In addition, I still can’t fully use it the way it’s supposed to be… It’s a borrowed power I can’t make it my own yet… That’s why… I tried to win without using it! But even then, in the end I couldn’t win and relied on it anyway! I’m still nowhere near strong enough…! And so… one day, I’ll have made it properly my own power. And then I’ll surpass you by my own power.” Midoriya finished breathing slightly hard.
After a long beat of silence Bakugo shouted, “What the hell is that…? A “borrowed” power…? I don’t get what the hell you’re trying to say… Did you come to make an even bigger fool of me!?... Huh!?”
Midoriya winced and took a step back from Bakugo. After his realization moments earlier, having the boy scream at him while looking so upset was almost physically painful.
“Today… you beat me, ass clown!!! That’s all there is to it! That’s all…” Bakugo trailed off with a strange expression on his face. An expression that Midoriya couldn’t read. He was about to continue his rant when All Might appeared.
Bakugo immediately began to walk away again and made it a little further down the road. All Might grabbed his shoulder and said something to him. Bakugo responded with something that made All Might let go of him and take a step back in surprise. Bakugo walked away.
“Young Midoriya, I want to talk with you…” All Might said turning around and herding Midoriya back into the school building.
Midoriya ached to go after Bakugo. He wanted to push All Might’s hand off of his shoulder and explain everything to Bakugo. He was trying to fix things and it was obvious he had only made them worse. He sighed and let All Might push him into the building…
Bakugo’s POV:
Damn it. I can’t stay here any longer. Fuck it. Bakugo thought to himself.
He was watching everyone congratulate Deku and ached to go over and tell him how impressed he was. He wanted to make sure the nerd was ok because while they had won Bakugo knew that he had gotten in at least a couple of good swings. Plus, when the building exploded, he could have sworn that Midoriya had been hit with debris and he was wearing his arm in a sling from having broken it with his own quirk. But Bakugo knew he never would. He was Bakugo, the angry ball of explosions that hated Deku’s guts. He sighed internally. That was what he let everyone think. Hell, that’s what he used to think until he realized that his anger stemmed from something else.
He was always showing off in front of the nerd when they were younger. At first, he believed it was because he wanted to prove how much better he was. He never wanted Deku’s help. He had believed it was because he hated weak people and didn’t need help from them. He had let Deku chase him. HE had believed that he was trying to show Deku how useless he was and that he would never be as good.
As they had gotten a little older, he had realized he showed off because he wanted Deku to notice him, he never wanted Deku’s help because he was embarrassed when Deku saw him weak, he let Deku chase him because he wanted to be chased. He liked him. Bakugo Katsuki had a crush on his childhood friend Midoriya Izuku. Not only that, he had bullied said crush and probably ruined any chance he ever had of dating him.
At first, he thought that it was ok, they were young and surely, he would move on. He never did. At this point he was fairly certain that his feelings were a little stronger than just a crush but not quite strong enough to be called love. As time went on, he began to resent his feelings. Treating Deku worse and worse because he didn’t know how to deal with them. Then, the end was in sight. They would graduate middle school and there was a 100% chance that they would be going to different schools (or at least classes). There is no way that someone who was quirkless could get into UA.
When Bakugo discovered that Midoriya was planning on applying to the UA hero course he panicked for two reasons. The first, highly selfish, reason was that if they did wind up together there was no way that he could bury his feelings. The second, slightly more worrying reason, was the entrance exam itself. Without a quirk there was no way for Deku to defend himself against whatever they were going to be put up against. No one knew what the exam would consist of. There had not been any deaths from an exam in a very long time, but broken bones and occasional maiming did occur. He panicked and did something that he will regret the rest of his life.
“Why don’t you just jump off the roof.”
Why the fuck did he say that. If Deku did die or even got hurt Bakugo didn’t know what he would do. He panicked. He said something he didn’t mean. There was no way that Deku would ever forget that. Or ever forgive him.
Then, Midoriya saved his life. And damn, if Bakugo thought he was attractive before he thought he was godlike now.
Then, Midoriya not only passed the entrance exam but made it into the top ten. Oh my God, seriously? Could he just for five minutes please not be the most attractive person Bakugo had ever met.
Then, Midoriya beat Bakugo in a fight. Although, Bakugo slightly blamed that on his immature way of dealing with his own emotions and getting distracted by the nerd’s ass in his new hero costume.
Then, he had a quirk. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
He was pulled out of his memories by Round Cheeks, “It was all Deku. His planning skills are amazing.” She gushed.
Well of course they are. He’s the smartest person I have ever met. Bakugo thought to himself snorting.
He risked a glance to Midoriya and saw him blushing. Cuteness overload. Bakugo.exe has stopped working. He shook his head trying to clear it earning a concerned look from Kirishima.
Fuck. I’m not in control right now. Bakugo thought. I need to get out of here. I can’t just leave now though. He looked at the door. Damn it. I can’t stay here any longer. Fuck it. He headed out the door. He made it out of the building and down to the school courtyard before he heard someone yelling.
“Kaachan!” Midoriya shouted, chasing after Bakugo.
Shit. Why is he chasing me? Fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck. I am trying to get away from him to get my head on straight. I’m not in control right now. Play it safe. Don’t say anything. Like how fucking hot it was that he beat me. No. Bad brain stop that. Ok, I don’t think I can use words right so…
“Aah?” Bakugo stopped and turned around.
“I-” Midoriya started.
“I need to tell you something.” He finally managed to choke out, looking at anything but Bakugo.
“I- I wasn’t lying to you. I wasn’t hiding this quirk from you. I obtained this quirk from somebody else…” Midoriya started glancing at Bakugo so quickly Bakugo wasn’t sure if he had even done so. “I can’t tell you who.” He continued quickly.
What? What is he saying? “Obtained this quirk from somebody else? Is that even possible? Bakugo’s thoughts were racing. He decided to try to keep his face impassive not wanting to give away anything. He must not have been doing a good job of it.
“I swear it’s true,” Midoriya continued obviously concerned that Bakugo didn’t believe him. “Even if it sounds like something out of a comic book…!”
I have never heard of something like this. But he must be telling the truth. He doesn’t lie, much, and never about something as important as this. How is this possible though? Who… ALL MIGHT! OH MY GOD OUR HERO GAVE DEKU HIS FUCKING POWER! Well, if anyone deserves it the nerd does. I mean he saved my ass when he didn’t even have a quirk. Sigh. Why did you have to be such a little bitch Katsuki. He is an angel.
Wait… what? He thinks that because he used the quirk he didn’t win with his own merit. What the hell? He figured out my attack pattern. He knew that I was going to go after him. He beat me by outsmarting me and he thinks that he doesn’t deserve that win. OH HELL NO! That was one of the most amazing (attractive) things I have ever seen. Ok, I gotta convince him of this. But how? Think Katsuki, you’ve got this…
4th wall break/narrator intervention: He did not have this.
After a long beat of silence Bakugo shouted, “What the hell is that…? A “borrowed” power…? I don’t get what the hell you’re trying to say… Did you come to make an even bigger fool of me!?... Huh!?”
Midoriya winced and took a step back from Bakugo.
Crap. Too intense. Ok, just make sure he knows that he beat you today.
“Today… you beat me, ass clown!!! That’s all there is to it! That’s all…” Bakugo trailed off. He couldn’t continue anymore. He was pretty sure his face had broken down into a look of total and complete awe mixed with fondness. He was saved having to explain the look when All Might showed up.
Thank God. Ok time to escape while they are both distracted. Bakugo thought as he turned and began to walk away. He didn’t make it real far though, All Might grabbed his shoulder.
“I apologize for not coming to talk to you young Bakugo.” All Might started.
What? What is he talking about? Bakugo thought.
“Confidence is very important for someone at your age…” He began to drone on.
Wow. He is really bad at this. No wonder Midoriya is having so much trouble learning how to use his quirk. All right that’s enough talking. Why can’t everyone just leave me alone?
“STOP!” Bakugo shouts cutting All Might off. “I AM GONNA SURPASS YOU TOO! I AM GONNA VAULT OVER YOU AS THE TOP HERO!” He turned and began to walk away again. All Might seemed too shocked to chase him.
Sigh. I just need to get my feelings under control and I’ll be fine. FUCK.
