Chapter Text
The bare walls of your office stared back at you. Walls that had been decorated by plaques and photos were now clear with pale squares to show that something had hung there. A mahogany desk stood in the middle of the room, no longer littered with case folders and old coffee cups. The room looked bigger now that it was empty and you found yourself wondering where all that room was when you needed it. You had been staring at the room for about ten minutes and as silly as it was you found yourself not wanting to leave.
It was funny.
Just last week you jumped at this new job opportunity. It was a job transfer so you would be doing your usual job but that’s not what you accepted it for. You would be getting transferred back to the Kanto Region, more specifically to the city of Musutafu. This was an opportunity you couldn’t miss, not only would you be back in your home city but you would also be closer to your sister and nephew. Working in Musutafu meant you would be able to see Izuku become the hero he always wanted to be and you could be there to give him the support he needs.
But, now that it was time to leave, you were being reluctant. This office was your second home for the last decade, your coworkers became friendly neighbors and the friends you made were your extended family.
You let out a sigh, finally deciding it was time to leave, when you heard a soft knock on the door. “(Name)?” You turned to find Sada, the office receptionist, standing in the door frame with a couple of interns accompanying her. While you got along with almost everyone in the office Sada was one of the few you actually considered a friend.
She was a petite woman in her thirties with long black hair, grey skin and gold eyes. She had a caring personality, which was something that drew you to her. In fact it was her personality that kept you from working yourself into the ground.
During her first month in the office you were working on a high profile case and only ever left your office to use the bathroom. You don’t take very good care of yourself during high stakes cases. Didn’t eat much, didn’t sleep much and hardly ever went home but it couldn’t be helped. There was a job to do. She noticed this with most of your other workers, and decided to provide snacks for everyone to keep their energy up. “If you don't eat then how do you expect to get the bad guy?” Were her words to you when you questioned her about the snacks. When the case was over she continued providing snacks for the office break-room, never asking for payment. “As long as you bring criminals to justice I’ll bring food to your bellies.” She would say, always rejecting your money whenever you offered to pay her back. Her caring nature was what kept this office functioning and you didn’t know what you were going to do without her.
“We know you didn’t want us to make a big deal about you leaving but we all wanted you to know how much we’ll miss you.” Sada said with a sad smile. You watched as one of the interns stepped further into the room and smiled as he offered you a small bouquet of blue hydrangea flowers. The boy was one of the newer interns and admittedly you didn’t know his name. He had only been with the D.A’s office for a week so you didn’t get much time to get to know him. “I don’t have much money but I saw these on the way this morning and hoped you would like them.” He said with a light blush. It was touching really, the boy hadn’t been here long yet he still wanted to show you some gratitude.
You took the flowers from his hands and turned to the next intern who you recognized as Izumi Yokota. She had been with your office for a little over six months. “Miss (Name) you've always been so nice to me, even on the days when your stressed out you always manage to give me a smile and some words of encouragement. I wish you well in your future endeavours and hope this maneki neko will bring you luck and happiness.” She said as she handed you the waving cat sculpture. You thanked her for the gift, already knowing it would look great in your new office.
The two bowed their heads at you before exiting the room and leaving you alone with Sada. “I’ll grab your box.” She said walking to where your last box sat on the floor. “Thank you.” You said, grateful for not having to juggle the box, vase and cat statue in your arms. “It’s what I’m here for (Name).” She said as the two of you made your way out of the room. “I know.” You smiled at your friend. “I don’t know what I’m gonna do without you.” You said as the two of you walked through the empty hallway. “You’ll be fine (Name), you didn’t get to where you are now because of me.” She was trying to be encouraging. “Didn’t you say this job would bring you closer to your family?” You nodded as the two of you approached the elevator. “You must be excited.” She said as the two of you waited for the door to open. “I am, the last time I saw Inko and Izuku was a little over two years ago.” You said as you watched the elevator numbers approach your floor. When the elevator finally dinged the two of you had to wait a moment for the occupants to get out. Some wished you well as they passed you and you thanked them all.
You sat the cat on top of the box Sada was holding and used your free hand to scan your badge on the elevator scanner. There was a negative beep and the screen flashed red, indicating your badge no longer worked. “Looks like they deactivated your badge already.” Sada said as you reached over and removed her badge from her shirt. When the badge was accepted you pressed the button for the parking garage and reattached the badge to her shirt.
Some generic jazz music played in the background and you noticed Sada sway her head to the tune. “Hey didn’t you say your nephew got into U.A?” She asked suddenly. “Yes he did.” You smiled proudly. “He got into the hero program. His classes started this week and we couldn’t be more proud.” You said referring to your sister. “Didn’t you say he was quirkless?” She asked curiously. “Well we thought he was but I guess his quirk kicked in sometime over the summer. According to Inko it’s some kind of strength quirk.” You said as the elevator approached the parking level. Sada readjusted the box in her arms and you took back the cat statue to make sure it didn’t fall. The two of you stepped out of the doors and you immediately spotted your car.
It was a dark blue two thousand nine Honda accord that you've had since you graduated law school. Your parent’s bought it the day you graduated and while it was a nice surprise you were more happy to see your sister than the car. You hadn’t seen her much while you were attending law school as you were busy studying and she was busy balancing work and raising Izuku. Said boy was only four and, while he didn’t understand what was happening, he still smiled excitedly. The memory of him waving at you with the hand that wasn’t holding his All Might action figure was still fresh in your memory.
You replaced the cat on the box Sada was holding so you could use your free hand to pull out your keys. “Thank you Sada.” You said as you opened the door for her. “No problem.” She said as she placed the box on the seat. She closed the door to your car and turned to you with a smile. "You've done a lot for me these past five years." You said and she rolled her eyes. “Don't go making this all mushy (Name)." She moved a strand of hair out of her face. “Anyway you act like I’ll never see you again, let’s not forget we’re getting together next Sunday for lunch.” She said pointedly. “Of course.” You said as you walked around the car. “I’ll see you then.” She said. You nodded watching as she turned and walked towards the elevator.
You opened the car door, waiting for a moment to make sure Sada got into the elevator before getting in. Since the flowers were in a cubed vase you sat them on the floor. Hopefully they wouldn’t fall over.
You turned over the ignition, the radio coming to life as the car did, and backed out of your spot for the last time. A sentimental feeling washed over you as you drove out of the parking garage. Most days you hated the ugly orange paint but now that it was your last time seeing it, it didn't look too bad.
The drive was going to be a slow one, as it always was at this time. Everyone was in a rush to get home and as a result the busy streets of downtown Nagoya became a nightmare for anyone who was in a rush. But you were in no rush to get home. Your apartment was packed and ready for the move tomorrow. This also meant you had no food for dinner tonight but with you dishes all packed away you couldn't cook anyway. Looks like your eating take-out again.
You looked around at the tall business buildings surrounding you. They made you feel small but the sight was beautiful. It was the middle of April which meant the Cherry blossom trees that decorated the city were in full bloom.
You love the sight of the blossoms, you loved spring in general. You loved the weather, the temperatures and, most importantly, what it brought out in people. Hope and cheerfulness. Most people would describe it was a time of rebirth and that’s exactly what it felt like to you. Here you were, getting ready to start your new job and new life in Musutafu. You’ll get to see more of your sister and Nephew and most importantly you’ll get to watch Izuku grow up to become a great hero.
Spring truly brings out the best in life.
Ten minutes later you found yourself nodding your head along to a song that played on the radio. You didn't recognize the voice but it didn't matter, it sounded nice and you were finally out of traffic. As you drove around the corner you spotted one of your favorite restaurants and were faced with a decision. Take out or dine in?
As easy of a choice as it was you still hadn't made up your mind by the time you parked. If you dine in you'll be able to enjoy the interior design of the restaurant which it something you loved. The restaurant had a semi-traditional Japanese interior, wood floors, square tower lamps and decorative bamboo trees. On the other hand if you take out then you may still have time to go for your daily jog and that was also something you enjoyed. Your jogging route was very scenic, passing through a wooded area, over a pond and through a dog park. It was something you did every day.
You grabbed your wallet from the glove box and turned off the car. As you stepped out a cool breeze hitting you as you closed the door. With the breeze that was blowing right now you knew the jog would be refreshing. The decision was a hard one but as you walked into the restaurant you knew your answer.
A large flat screen TV was set up behind the counter but that’s not what drew your attention. A photo of All Might took up most of the screen, a caption reading ‘Hero All Might interferes with U.S.J attack’ below it. You walked up to the bar side seats and sat down. The waitress approached you with a friendly smile. "Hello, what can I get you?" She asked, pen and notepad in hand. "A number eight combo." You pointed at the screen. "And can you turn this up please?" You asked. The girl nodded as she scribbled your order down. Leaning forward as she turned up the TV you listened carefully as the newscast reported the incident, hoping to god that Izuku wasn't hurt.
