Chapter 1: First Step: Blind Date

Chapter Text

Park Jimin sat inside the fancy restaurant waiting on a blind date to show up. He was already fifteen minutes late and Jimin was ready to leave. He shouldn’t have let Taehyung talk him into this. It just wasn’t him. The whole dating scene. He hadn’t dated in years. What’s the point of dating when you are a dad and you work full time?

“Look, Jimin, I really think you should give it a try,” Taehyung had said, “you have dated in years. Not since Seoyun was born. I think you owe this to yourself.”

“I dunno Tae, most people are turned off to the fact that I have a child. People don’t really accept that. Remember the last time I went on a date?”

“I promise you, Min Yoongi is different from that asshole, okay?”

“And how do you know this ”Min Yoongi”? Jimin asked. He was incredulous to the thought of going out on a blind date.

“He works at the firm with Jungkook. Jungkook says that he’s one of the “best damn lawyers he’s ever seen”. I don’t even think he’s lost a case before.”

“I don’t know Teahung, he probably will be weirded out by me.”

“Listen, Min Yoongi is a bit different. Not what you would expect. He’s… just go on the date and you will see. I really think that you’re going to like him. I honestly do. Seoyun is your life, she is your world. But you need more. No one will ever come before her. Not me, not Jungkook, Seokjin or Namjoon. Min Yoongi won’t be any different. He won’t come between you and her. I think you’ll see that.”

So, Jimin decided to give it a go. So far, it was turning into a mistake. He glanced at his watch again. Twenty minutes had gone by. It’s time to leave , Jimin thought. He was just about to stand up when he heard someone clear their throat behind him. “Hello, are you Park Jimin.” A deep voice asked behind him.

Jimin turned around in his seat, “yes I-” his words were cut off when he saw the young man. He was very attractive. His hair was dyed blonde and he was skinny. His facial structure was almost impeccable. Park Jimin cleared his throat, “yes, I am. I’m guessing you are Min Yoongi.”

“I am. My apologies for being late. I thought my roommate, Hoseok, was going to be home tonight where I could ask him for a ride. My luck, he wasn’t. It’s kind of hard navigating taxis when you’re in a wheelchair,” Yoongi chuckled. His voice was deep and it almost sent shivers through Jimin's body. “Again, my apologies.”

“That’s perfectly fine. I understand, I didn’t even realize that you were late.” Well, I totally did, but I’m not going to tell you that. Taehyung, you asshole, you could have told me that he was handicap. Not that it matters, but still. Jimin, without being asked, walked to the other side of the table, and moved the chair out from in front of him. He moved it to the side of the table that wasn’t facing him. Luckily the table only had two chairs. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have known what to do with the chair.

“Thank you,” Yoongi said and rolled himself to the opposite end of the table. “No one has ever thought of moving the chair. I can’t believe you noticed that.”

“How are we supposed to talk if I can’t face you? That would diminish the whole point of this date,” Jimin laughed and took his seat. “I’m starving, I hope you are too.”

“I’m always hungry,” Yoongi mentioned as the waiter approached the table.

“Can I start the two of you off with a drink?” The waiter asked.

“Just water for me,” Yoongi said, “with lemon if you don’t mind bringing some when you bring the food out. There is no rush.” Maybe he doesn’t drink? The water was offered. Free of course, does he not want something else. Maybe I shouldn’t order any either. I don’t need to get drunk.

“And you, sir?”

“Same for me, just water.” The waiter nodded and told them the specials. Jimin ordered a type of traditional Korean dish and Yoongi ordered a type of seafood dish.

“Taehyung likes to say that I crack lobsters with my face,” Yoongi laughed, “so excuse my manners if there are any shellfish in it.”

“That must be a sight to see. Don’t worry, I’m a bit clumsy, so excuse my way of eating in general.” Jimin retorted. He felt at ease, something he usually didn’t feel on the first date. Well, it wasn’t really like he remembered what being on a date felt like.

“So, tell me about yourself,” Yoongi stated.

“Oh, umm, well. My name is Park Jimin. I have a five year old daughter named Seoyun. I’m twenty four by the way,” Jimin searches Yoongi’s face for discomfort, but he didn’t see that, “I am a widower, but that’s a bit deep I guess.” Jimin laughed nervously and coughed, “I am a vocal coach for Star Summit Entertainment . Other than that, I’m a bit boring. I like coffee, walks in the park, and romantic comedies.”

“That doesn’t sound boring to me,” Yoongi grinned, “a vocal coach for Summit?”

“You know Summit?” Jimin asked.

“I think everyone knows Star Summit Entertainment , but, yeah. My roommate is Jung Hoseok, he’s a dance coach there. You may know him?”

“Oh my god! Yes, I do know Hoseok! I didn’t realize when you mentioned him earlier that it was him. He’s actually one of my friends.”

“You’re saying we both have this many mutual friends and have never met before?” Yoongi joked.

“I’m not sure how we haven’t. Anyways, tell me about yourself?”

“Well, you know my name, so I’m twenty six. I am a lawyer, I work at the same firm as Jungkook. Uh,” Yoongi racks his brain, “I am a cancer survivor, osteosarcoma which messed up my legs. It was only in my legs which is why I’m in the wheelchair. I probably will never walk again. I guess we are both a bit deep huh? I like reading, music, and sleeping.”

Jimin didn’t really know what to say. But he didn’t want to stare at Yoongi, let alone leave a pause. “Got to say, I wasn’t expecting a hobby of yours to be sleeping.” Jimin laughed. He didn’t want tension.

“Lawyers never get to sleep. So I’m always tired. I really just like sleeping though.”

Jimin laughed as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. “I’m so sorry, Taehyung is calling me. He has Seoyun with him and I don’t think he would have called me unless something is wrong.”

“Go ahead, I don’t mind.” Yoongi said and took a drink of water.

“Taehyung, what’s wrong,” Jimin asked as soon as he raised his phone to his ear.

“It’s Seoyun, she woke up and wasn’t feeling well. She felt hot so I took her temperature and it’s high Jimin. Like really high and now she is throwing up.” Taehyung said panickedly over the phone.

“How high is her temperature?”

“104.3.”

“Fuck, Taehyung are you serious? You’re not reading the thermometer wrong?”

“No it’s 104.3.”

“Okay, I’m calling the hospital. I need you to stay calm and head to the hospital. I’ll meet you there, okay? Please, Taehyung, keep her safe.”

“I’m so sorry,” Jimin said as he clicked his phone off, “my daughter has a fever that’s so high that she could possibly have a seizure. I have to go.”

“Go, go, just leave the check to me. Don’t worry about anything, you need to go to your daughter.”

“Thank you, I’ll get your number from Taehyung. I’m really sorry about this,” Jimin said and rushed off.

All the way to the hospital he was white knuckled. His hands gripped the steering wheel of his car. Was this the Gods way of punishing him for going on a date? He just wanted his little girl to be okay. He would never forgive himself if she wasn’t okay.

When he arrived at the hospital Jimin ran to the front desk. “My name is Park Jimin, my babysitter brought my daughter Park Seoyun in with a high fever.”

“Mr. Jimin, your daughter is in the pediatric clinic. Just take the elevator to the third floor and they can take you to your daughter.” The nurse directed. “Don’t worry, Mr. Jimin, your daughter is just fine. We see fevers like this all the time.”

Jimin nodded, “thank you nurse.” It took him less than five minutes to find Seoyun. She was sitting on the bed babbling to Jungkook and Taehyung while eating a popsicle.

She turned around when the door opened. “Daddy!” She squealed happily and jumped off the bed. Jimin bent down and picked his daughter up.

“I hear you gave Uncle Tae and Kookie a big scare. How are you feeling pumpkin?” Jimin couldn’t lessen his grip on Seoyun.

“I felt a lot better after I threw up daddy. My tummy was hurting really bad, but it’s not hurting now.”

“That’s good pumpkin. Are you tired?” Jimin asked. Seoyun nodded and yawned. Jimin could see the little bags under her eyes. She had a rough night. “Why don’t you lay back down? Daddy needs to talk to the doctor.” Jimin said when he saw the doctor walk through the door.

“Are you this little ray of Sunshine’s father?” The Doctor asked.

Jimin held out his hand, “I’m Park Jimin. I am Seoyun’s father. Is Seoyun okay?”

“Your daughter has a twenty four hour virus. The fever broke almost as soon as they brought her in. She should be okay, but if you take her home and notice her fever is back, bring her back in. Just keep her full of fluids. Popsicles and suckers will be your best friend. She may vomit a few more times but it’s just part of the virus.”

Jimin nodded. He took in everything that the doctor said. Seoyun had viruses before. Anything gross was nothing new to Jimin. The fever was higher than it had ever been. That had been his only cause for concern.

“You did the right thing, Mr. Jimin, it’s hard being a single parent some time. But you got her here in a timely matter and I’m happy to tell you that you can sign this paper and then take her home.”

“Thank you doctor.” Jimin took the paper and signed it. He picked up Seoyun who was already asleep. “Come on guys, let’s go.”

They walked slowly out of the hospital, Seoyun was getting bigger everyday. “You guys did really good tonight. It really shows me how much I can trust you.”

“We are really sorry for having to interrupt your date,” Jungkook sighed, “we wanted to handle it, but we knew it would be best to… anyways we are sorry.”

“I’m glad you interrupted me. Seoyun is my world. I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to her.”

“So, how was the date until we had to call you?” Taehyung asked which earned himself an elbow in the rib from Jungkook.

“Would you happen to have Yoongi’s number?” Jimin asked.

“Wait, are you serious?”

“Yes, I am. Text it to me.”

“Of course.”

Jimin made his way home. When he got there he woke Seoyun up. He gave her a bath and reclothed her before he put her in his bed. “Baby, if you feel sick I’m going to put this pale here. Grab it okay. We will worry about getting you to the bathroom afterwards.” Seoyun nodded. Jimin raised the covers for her to crawl under.

Once he turned the light off, he picked up his phone. He was one missed notification.

Taetae

Here is Yoongi’s number. Is Seoyun okay?

Jiminie

She’s fine. And thank you, I really hope he doesn’t mind that I had to rush off.

Taetae

I’m sure he was okay with it. He has patience and all.

Jiminie

You could have warned me you know?

Taetae

Yeah, but where is the fun in that?

Text him, m’kay?

Jiminie

I’m going to.

Jimin presses on the number and added it to his contacts.

Jimin

Hey, it’s Jimin. Is this Yoongi?

Less than a minute later his phone pings. It wasn’t Taehyung. It was Yoongi.

Yoongi

Yes. It is. How is your daughter?

Jimin

She’s fine! Her fever had broken before I got to the hospital. Thank you for asking. Were you able to make it home safely?

Jimin was surprised that Yoongi had asked about Seoyun. He was well aware that most people when it came to dating didn’t think to ever ask about the child. But Yoongi had already proven to be different.

Yoongi

Hoseok came and picked me up. Don’t worry about missing dinner, the food was shit. Wasn’t worth the wait.

Jimin

That's good to know. I really enjoyed the little time we had. Would you maybe want to hang out again?

Yoongi

I would love to. This time I’m picking the place though. I hope you don’t mind?

Jimin

Of course, I don’t mind at all. I just need enough time to get a babysitter. Do you have a date in mind?

Yoongi

How about this weekend, Saturday? Is that too soon?

Jimin

This weekend should be enough time. Text me the address day before?

Yoongi

Of course. I’ll see you on Saturday, Jimin. Goodnight.

Jimin

Goodnight, Yoongi.

Jimin rolled over and sat his phone down on the table. He would call Taehyung in the morning and see if he would watch Seoyun this weekend. He honestly couldn’t wait to see Yoongi again. The weekend couldn’t come soon enough.
