Masquerade

Summary:

Disguised by their masks, Jungkook and Yoongi stumble upon each other at a masquerade.

Notes:

Hey! This is my first ever work um yeah! I got the inspiration from The Phantom Of The Opera song masquerade so I do recommend listening to it as you read! I’m sorry there’s not a lot of action but I hope you enjoy

Work Text:

Beauty. It filled the large, arcing ceilings, wrapped around the towering pillars and shined off of the chandeliers. Every blink Yoongi took blessed him with more flashes of colour, natural greens, spinning reds, grinning yellows, and colours he’d sworn he had never even seen before. Cheeks flushed in anticipation, he took a step further into the rich ballroom. Masks took over his vision, even from his vantage point upon the stairs, everywhere he looked were shimmering masks, concealing identities, people hiding their faces, becoming unknown to the world. Even the band, bellowing out cheerful orchestra music was completely unidentifiable. Yoongi loved it.

He loved masquerades, he loved the whole idea of it. He loved forgetting who he was, forgetting everything about his life and just living in the anonymity his mask granted him, even if it was only for one night. Unsurprisingly, he was truly decked out in his best tonight: black silk shirt, silk bow tie, skinny black slacks and a sequinned multicoloured blazer jacket. His own mask fairly lacy, the swirling black patterns creating the shape of a butterfly, the multicoloured glitters adorning it glinted in the light, a few also making home in his ebony, curled hair. Yeah, Yoongi felt beautiful, he figured he deserved it, if only for one night.

Slowly taking steps down the stairs, passing giggling girls who seemed to glow and charismatic guys who seemed to call attention to their own beautifully coloured outfits. It truly was a spectacle to behold, the sea of smiles, the burning stares, peering glances. Spirits were high, excitement tangible in the air and Yoongi didn’t even bother to try to keep the giddy grin off of his face. Everyone loved these nights, not quite lying about who you were but not being entirely truthful either.

Eventually he had managed to make his way over to the banquet, a true feast laid out before him. The colourful dance bustled on behind him, fabrics joining together to create the prettiest sea anyone would have the pleasure to view. However, Yoongi supposed he wouldn’t be joining in until he’d had a few glances of champagne at least. Giggling to himself, still giddy from the energy stuffing up the air, he plucked a few finger-foods from their places on the gleaming silver trays, almost squeaking in shock when he saw another mask staring back at him.

Twirling around with cheeks slightly puffed from food, he stared wide-eyed at the undoubtably handsome stranger. The boy opposite him was dressed up in a blue velvet suit, a feather tucked into one pocket, his shirt holding the pattern of the night sky (his doe eyes also containing a few stars) and his deep blue mask concealing his entire forehead and down to his sharp cheekbones on one side, a beautiful golden lace creating swirling patterns around the edges. Peering up closer (yes the boy towered above him Yoongi grudgingly noted) he noticed a few golden speckles in his wavy long hair too. Where had this picturesque stranger come from?

Weirdly, the guy seemed equally as shocked as himself, mouth slightly gaping open as his beautiful eyes trailed over Yoongi’s form, causing a pulsing warmth to make itself known, nestled deep in Yoongi’s chest. Cheeks taking on a darker red colour, he decided to introduce himself.

The two boys seemed to lose themselves to each other after that. The party roared on behind them but they paid no heed, the only thing they were interested in stood right in front of them. Two souls intertwined that night, whether for good or for worse would be up to the future to decide. But one thing for sure, when the boy containing the galaxies in his eyes offered his hand to Yoongi, he grasped it tightly, the pulsating warmth becoming stronger. If only for one night where they forgot who they were, for the one night they could be whoever they wanted, be what they wanted with no burdens of their life, Yoongi would take this one night to live, to just exist with this stranger and enjoy the moment while it lasted. The unknowns of tomorrow could wait.
