Work Text:
Shinsou’s eyes flicked over to his phone, buzzing as it illuminated the room. He’d told himself he’d stop using it a while ago, hoping try and at least get a little sleep. So far, it hadn’t really been working all too well. He’d just decided to stare up at the ceiling instead. Would it really be any worse if he just picked it up again to see who on Earth was messaging him at 4:30 in the morning?
Sighing he reached for his phone, seeing a message from Kaminari.
Kaminari: Yo, Shinsou, you up?
Shinsou narrowed his eyes in slight suspicion. The only reason Kaminari would be up this early was if he was up to something. Or if something had happened already. He was considering putting his phone back down and going back to ‘sleep’ before his curiosity finally won him over.
Shinsou: Yeah?
Kaminari: Cool! Meet me on the roof?
Okay, that was definitely suspicious.
Shinsou: Any particular reason why?
Kaminari: To watch the sunset!
Shinsou: You sure you haven’t murdered someone or something?
Kaminari: I promise no one has been murdered! I just wanna hang out with my bro and watch the sunset!
Shinsou wasn’t particularly convinced. Kaminari was a trouble magnet. It was four in the morning. Despite his reservations, he was already halfway out the door. He quietly shut it behind him before heading up the stairs, hoping he wasn’t being too loud. The stairwell looked dark and gloomy at this time of night, his footsteps echoing loudly against the metal. It didn’t take him long to reach the roof door, pushing it open whilst praying the weighty thing didn’t slam back loudly into place. He spotted the blonde boy almost instantly, leaning on the parapet lining the buildings edge, peering up at the sky with warm golden eyes. Shinsou couldn’t help the small smile that broke out onto his face.
“Sunset, huh?” He asked causing Kaminari to startle briefly, before turning around to face him with a warm smile.
“You came!” He responded cheerily.
“Well, whatever trouble you’re in is surely more interested than staring at my ceiling.” Shinsou shrugged heading over to join the boy. The blonde snorted before amending.
“Yeah, you came even though you thought I ‘murdered someone or something.’”
“Shut up.” He replied elbowing him a little harshly. Kaminari chuckled and the two remained silent for a moment, Shinsou taking a moment to appreciate the view. The sky was a darkish purple, a few straggling stars hanging behind, all the early tells that sunrise was in fact coming. Shinsou was glad he had decided to slip on a hoodie before he left. The cold bite to the corridor had already been apparent, but it was a lot more prominent up here, the gentle breeze bringing the morning chill along with it.
“Why are we here?” He blurted out after a moment.
“Dude, I already told you! Are you really still hanging onto the murder thing cause’ I already promised you I—“
“No I mean— why’d you come up here with me specifically, to watch the sunrise?” Shinsou clarified cutting off the blonde’s ramblings.
“Well for a start, it’s really pretty.” Kaminari answered still smiling at him brightly, as if the answer was obvious. “I saw once from my balcony because I couldn’t sleep— and I like spending time with you! So, why not?” He finished with a shrug. Shinsou blushed a little at the admission, but he tried to pass it off with a chuckle as Kaminari added. “Plus, you’re like, the only person who’s ever up this early.”
“Well, at least it’s Sunday tomorrow so we don’t have school.” He defended before adding, “and you’re up too,” with a small pout.
“Yeah, but I haven’t stayed up all night. I only woke up like an hour ago.” He retorted back, deliberately leaving out the part where he’d set an alarm just so he could wake up on time, and watch the sunset with Shinsou alone—
“Are you just in your pyjamas?” The aforementioned boy asked raising a brow, cutting through Kaminari’s thoughts.
“Y-yeah?” He responded questioningly.
“Aren’t you cold?” The blonde hummed before answering.
“I guess a little. They’re not that warm.” He shrugged nonchalantly. Shinsou rolled his eyes rather dramatically slipping off his hoodie, and chucking it at Kaminari’s head. He blinked surprised, staring at it. “... Are you sure? Won’t you get cold too?“
“No, I was prepared for it being cold at four in the morning. Just wear warmer clothes next time, alright?” He huffed back trying to suppress another eye roll. Kaminari looked away, blushing a little as he put on the hoodie. He bent his head down almost burying himself in the garment, trying to catch the subtle scent Shinsou had left behind. He hoped he didn’t notice. He probably looked like a total weirdo.
“Hey, it’s coming up now.” Shinsou informed after a few more moments of silent. He watched as the blonde’s face brightened, turning to looking up at the sky’s brightening purple hue, the bottom slowly shifting to deep oranges and yellows. By now, the straggling stars had faded out, clearly stolen by Kaminari’s star-struck expression. He was practically beaming in rivalry with rising sun, causing Shinsou’s chest to flutter. He really was cute...
Shinsou stood a little rigidly for a moment, trying not to stare at the blonde as he debated. His heart was beating hard in his chest and he took deep breath trying to force himself to relax. Before he could second guess himself again, he twitched open his hand taking Kaminari’s loosely. He turned away blushing as the other looked up at him, also little flustered. He simply smiled, gripping Shinsou’s hand a little tighter.
“I told you it was pretty, right?” He asked leaning into Shinsou’s touch.
“Y-Yeah.” He agreed trying not to freak out, staring aggressively at the slowly shifting sky. “But I think you’re prettier.” He continued, words slipping out his mouth before he could even realise what he said. Kaminari snorted as Shinsou blushed harder.
“That’s cheesy, dude.” He commented turning to face him.
“And inviting me to watch the sunrise with you isn’t?” He argued back meeting Kaminari’s eyes. They stared at each other for a few brief seconds before leaning in meeting halfway in a kiss, sun blazing passionately behind them. Shinsou gently lifted his free hand to cup Kaminari’s face, who pulled his own around the other’s waist in response. They pulled apart after what like forever yet all too soon, Shinsou’s chest fluttering statically as he tried to catch his breath. They stared at each other for a moment completely still, before Kaminari leant his head against Shinsou’s chest. He smiled softly, moving to run a hand through the blonde’s hair. They remained silent until eventually Kaminari spoke up.
“I’m tired.” He mumbled against his shirt. Shinsou chuckled a little smiling.
“I can tell. Do you want to go back inside?” He asked. Kaminari just hummed, probably in agreement but neither of them made move to head back inside. They stood there for a few more minutes in silence, before Shinsou spoke up again.
“Alright, come on,” he started, gripping Kaminari by the shoulders. “We really do need to go back inside before you fall asleep.” The blonde made a noise of complaint but stood up straight anyway, looking half-asleep.
“You’re comfy.” He mumbled voicing his complaints as Shinsou retook his hand.
“You’re adorable.” He smirked leading Kaminari over to the stairs.
“Shut up.” He mumbled causing the other to roll his eyes as he pushed the door open. Shinsou tried to be quiet again as he headed down the first two flights, praying no one was around to catch them. He stopped on the third floor very carefully opening the door leading into the dorms, practically creeping to Kaminari’s room as he stumbled behind him.
“We’re here.” He whispered as he opened the door practically shoving the half-asleep boy through the door. Kaminari almost looked drunk as he stumbled before collapsing straight onto his bed. Shinsou rolled his eyes at the dramatic display smirking as he pushed the door too.
“Kaminari, no.” He mumbled as he tried to yank the duvet out from under him before chucking it back over top where it should be. “Night you idiot.” Kaminari hummed, smiling warmly as he huddled into the duvet.
“Thanks, love you.” He mumbled although he already looked very much asleep. Shinsou blinked before smiling wider, planting a small kiss on the boys forehead.
“Love you too.” He mumbled quietly before turning back to the door, closing it gently before scurrying back to his own dorm, finally settling down for a good nights sleep.
