Chapter Text
Jang Gye-oul knocked, her fingers shaking slightly from the panic. What she’s about to do, the task at hand might as well be the moment her heart gets thrown out the window, broken, forever lost to her.
She tilted her head, meeting the world eye to eye. She’s no sore loser. She’d gamble, like anything else in her life, nothing is certain.
It can’t be too hard. She’s had her heart at his feet before. It won’t be that different from the first time he’d walk all over it. More than her heart, her ego sure was bruised. Against her better judgment, she’d decided to ask him out. Jealousy. Cursing through her veins, her possessive instinct hire-wired, Dr. Bae could drop dead if looks could kill. She was sure.
She tucked stray strands of hair, one of her manic habits.
The door was abruptly opened.
The new head of the Cardiology Department nodded. His silent question, answered by Gye-oul’s knotted forehead.
“Dr. Jang Gye-oul...”
Her eyes, falling into the empty desk behind him. Her heart dropped.
Her mouth went dry, a bitter metallic taste at the tip of her tongue.
Before Kim Jun-wan could say the words she is most afraid to hear, she abruptly bowed and went running back to who knows where. Her sense of direction, slightly empaired, she found herself nearing the on-call room.
She closed the door behind her, just when the tears she’s been holding back, flowed freely.
She was too late.
He left.
And what hurts her more is the fact that he didn’t even say goodbye to her. He didn’t even think of her, of how she would feel.
She was being irrational. They were nothing but colleagues.
Her delusional heart has betrayed her. The stolen glances meant nothing. The choco pies meant nothing.
She was too stupid to figure out the puzzle in front of her. He was not complicated at all. Lying to her, instead of a straight rejection was not a gentle way to let her down. It was code for “not interested”.
Red hot rage, she felt her insides combusting. How can she be this stupid?
And why did she come too late?
She missed him.
