Work Text:
I. Affection grows when held on longer
Everything's peaceful again in the cultivation world. After the incident in the Guanyin Temple, all other sects went back to their own lands and continued life as it is. It has been months that passed and what happened only remained as a tale to be gossiped, a tale for entertainment and a tale that will eventually be forgotten.
But for the people closely involved, was it truly easy to forget? It isn't even easy to forgive, how else was to forget?
Jiang Cheng thought of this as he fuzzed around his room to prepare for his travel to Cloud Recesses. It'll be a first in a long while. He clearly avoided going there for months because of the obvious reason-- crossing paths with Wei Wuxian.
He frowned, even the thought of Wei Wuxian dampened his mood. He growled under his breath, why does he have an urge to beat something--anything? His chest tightened, and he paused his movements. He stilled himself and count from 10 backwards with each breath he took.
When he opened his eyes again, an item caught his eye. It was the sword Suibian. It lays atop one of his chest drawers, displayed like trophy. He walked closer, fingers lingering on the hilt. Jiang Cheng swallowed, flashes of memory flitting in his brain. Immediately, remorse and shame flooded his heart. He withdrew and turned his back. He called a servant to bring his things and he stepped out of his room.
Jiang Cheng set out to Gusu. If not for the reasons of arranging Jin Ling's one year education in Cloud Recesses, and personal invitation from Lan Qiren, he would've thundered a big NO to anyone who forced him to step foot on that mountain.
The travel, even though it was easy flying in sword, was in turmoil. His inside was in turmoil. Jiang Cheng felt anxious and worried, all in all a constipation of negative emotions. The cold touch of the winds fluttering his robes should have refreshed him a bit. However, all he could feel was suffocation from the emotions he felt.
Would he be there? What is he gonna do when they faced together? He should've brought Suibian and shove it back to him. Fuck. I should've sent a letter first to ask if Wei Wuxian is there.
He blew a breath and asked his disciples to descend in Caiyi Town first.
They walked the markets, along the river where some vendors sell loquats and Emperor's Smile. He almost stopped on a stall where a middle aged man shouts 'EMPEROR's SMILE, BEST WINE IN GUSU'. He gritted his teeth and then continued to travel until they reached the stairs going up to Cloud Recesses.
Jiang Cheng's palm sweated, he fidgeted. There's a pounding in his chest and a clenching in his heart. He felt like he stopped breathing. He gasped and took a deep breath.
What the fuck, A-Cheng! You are a fucking Sect Leader! Get a hold of yourself!
He steeled himself and continued to walk until he sees the gates of Gusu Lan Sect. Two disciples greeted him, he showed a letter of invitation from Lan Qiren and they let him in. One disciple led him and his people into the mountains.
All the way, his heart pounded so hard in his chest. He swallowed thickly, his throat dried. Who could've thought he would feel so much just by being here in Cloud Recesses? A small part of him was anticipating a loud voice to suddenly call-out to him. Or an unrestrained laughter echoing around. Trust Wei Wuxian to disrupt the peaceful silence of Cloud Recesses.
He tread carefully along a path leading to one of the halls. When they reached the place, Lan Qiren was already waiting outside. He breathed a little at the lone presence.
"Master Lan Qiren." Jiang Cheng bowed, his disciple mimicking him.
"Sect Leader Jiang."
"I have presents from Yunmeng for Lan-shifu*." He gestured for the disciples to present the gifts.
There were different kinds of herbs and spices both for medicinal use and cuisine. He made sure his disciples picked those that were not spicy or too much for a Lan taste.
When the Lan disciples accepted the gifts, Lan Qiren invited Jiang Wanyin inside the hall. They both seated themselves across each other and a disciple served them tea before leaving.
Jiang Cheng uncurled his fists and sighed his relief. His tensed shoulder eased a bit and he wiped a sweat on his brow. All these haven't gone unnoticed to Lan Qiren's eyes, whose gaze never left the younger man in front of him. He raised the cup near his lips as he waited for the Sect Leader to compose himself. He was patient, always patient to this man.
"Shifu, I'm here to heed your invitation and make necessary arrangements for Jin Ling's education here after the winter."
He jumped to the important matters, no time to chitchat and exchange pleasantries. It was easy to settle, only small matters to discuss and no need to linger anymore. Lan Qiren knew this but he... well let's say he wanted to spend more time with Sect Leader Jiang so he opened a topic he assumed was safe.
As he had conversation with his former teacher, Jiang Cheng slowly, unknowingly, let his guard down. Lan-shifu asked him how was his sect, the Lotus Pier, and if there's any problems in Yunmeng he's having a hard time in dealing. He offered wise advice that piques Jiang Cheng's attention. He nodded and was grateful for the advice.
Then, the room was silent. They both sipped the tea and were lost in thoughts. Jiang Cheng felt awkward of the silence. He doesn't know what to say to fill it. But he remained impassive and waited for the elder before him to dismiss him.
He expected different though.
"Jiang Wanyin."
He perked at the name. He hardly ever heard anyone call him that, much less from an elder like the one in front of him.
"Jiang Wanyin, is it all right to call you that?"
"O-of course. Shifu is welcome to call me that." He bowed his head slightly.
"I just remembered the times when you were here in Cloud Recesses for the studies." Lan Qiren had a thoughtful expression on his face and Jiang Cheng doesn't know how to react.
"It's just that, it had been so long ago, and I felt so old thinking back to it." He turned to Jiang Cheng and leveled a stare to him. Jiang Cheng really was surprised at the sudden change in mood of the elder before him. He can only manage to listen to his words.
"Jiang Wanyin, do you remember even after Wei Wuxian was sent back to Lotus Pier, you are left here to continue your studies with Sect Leader Nie?"
There's a familiar emotion riding him again at the mere mention of the name of that man. He thought back to then, being left alone to study in Cloud Recesses. Even when Wei Wuxian was not around, he still struggled to become outstanding in class. He had to work hard after lectures to make sure not to bring more shame to their Sect. He still had to make up for the troubles Wei Wuxian left.
Jiang Cheng had curled his fists on his lap again. His face thunderous at the unpleasant memory of him picking up the loose ends after Wei Wuxian. He turned to Lan-shifu. His temper barely restrained. He doesn't want to disrespect an elder but he's teetering on uncharted territory.
"Lan-shifu, I don't understand why you are bringing this up. But those memories were long in the past and I don't need someone to remind me of it."
Lan Qiren's expression didn't change but his eyes did. It became sad and solemn, gazing at Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng wanted to get the hell out of here, he started regretting coming to Cloud Recesses. What's wrong with the people here. He thought Lan-shifu was different.
There's a nasty expression on his face and an added disappointment to the only person--Lan-- he thought was decent enough to hold a casual conversation with him. His heart ached, and he swallowed a lot of emotions again.
"Jiang Wanyin, I apologize. It seemed that we both held different kinds of memories of that time. If you could, perhaps, give this old man another chance. I am ready to tell you a different tale."
Jiang Cheng hesitated, truthfully he doesn't owe Lan-shifu anything. But looking at those solemn eyes, he started to wonder if there really was a different tale to tell. Before he could stop himself he uttered, "Well, humor me then."
Lan Qiren nodded, he was a bit grateful.
"I'm not surprised that you had forgotten because it was only a brief period."
Lan Qiren started to narrate. After their lectures in Lanshi, he would briefly take a stroll around Cloud Recesses to see and monitor the students of their activities after class. Some students and disciples would salute as they greeted him then left in a hurry. He was on his way up to his own shi when he saw Jiang Cheng, courtesy name, Jiang Wanyin of Yunmeng Jiang Sect, sitting in a Lotus position under a big tree. His eyes were closed and a pleasant expression on his face. He thought, "what a diligent man". Before he left the young man alone for his own meditation.
Since then, it became a habit to walk to that same path at the same our to pass by the young man. Each day, Lan Qiren left unspoken words for the young man.
"Isn't he always with that young Nie?"
"Why do I always find him alone?"
"His posture are tensed, he must have heavy things on his mind."
He wondered these, until one day he walked the same path again and he didn't see the Jiang heir. He was confused but didn't pursue anymore thoughts.
Not long, he would find Jiang Wanyin in the library, reading texts, doing assignments. Sometimes he would watch from a distance how Jiang Wanyin would spar with a Lan disciple at the training field. There seems to be so much determination and strong will within Jiang Wanyin that needed to be unleashed. His genuine aspiration to do better and excel astonished Lan Qiren. It was like seeing his nephews once more in another person at the same time not. Because his nephews were also strong-willed and raised according to thousands of rules. Jiang Wanyin wasn't, he wasn't raised bound by the rules of his own Sect. So when he saw Jiang Wanyin act unrestrained, or when his loud voice echoed around when scolding the young Nie, Lan Qiren welcomed it. He turned a blind eye for the one-sided declaration of a newly adopted nephew.
Jiang Cheng had a bewildered expression in his face. What the fuck?! What--why are these things being said to me? And from Lan Qiren of all!!!
Lan Qiren must have caught on to his expression and smoothly assured him. "Do not be afraid or be spooked. I have no romanticized feelings toward you, Jiang Wanyin. I simply held admiration to the young Jiang heir who is steadfast, diligent and also headstrong."
Lan Qiren rested his hands on his lap and studies the expression of Jiang Wanyin.
Jiang Cheng can't help but frown. It's not that he isn't... appreciative of Lan-shifu's high regard of him. It's just that, it's rare for him now to be regarded as such. Especially a Lan elder.
Lan Qiren gave a short sigh. Unusual of him but Jiang Wanyin was not giving him any response. So he tried again.
"What I am saying, Jiang Wanyin, was that years may have passed, seasons had had changed so much. We ourselves are far too different from since then. But I just wanted to express my sincere acknowledgement and appreciation to the Sect Leader I had a pleasure to mentor." And to make his point across, Lan Qiren stood up and offered a salute to Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng scrambled to stand on his feet and lifted the hands of the Master. He could feel his face flushing, and his heart throbbing. There were different emotions choking him right now but he still had a dignity and face to save. He cannot cry over the praise and regards thrown at him.
"Please Shifu-- Master Lan Qiren--stand--I -I" he cleared his throat and stepped back. In turn he did a deep bow, to hide a few shed of uncontainable tears.
"This Sect Leader is only a man humbled by such praise from Shifu. I am also grateful to have been learned under Master Lan Qiren's teaching." Lan Qiren raised him and Jiang Cheng tried so hard to wipe the tears and blink them away.
Too much, it's too much. He wanted to get away fast but at the same time stay and bask in this short affection. How could you cry over this Jiang Cheng?!
They both settled down again the tea already finished and the incense burning at its end. It's signaling that it needs to be changed soon. Jiang Cheng felt scrapped raw, he was really thrown off guard to what happened today. This was more overwhelming than facing Wei Wuxian. No, probably not. But it definitely outweigh the other for now. Lan Qiren cleared his throat, he decided his goal for today had been met.
"Jiang Wanyin, you have come so far. Truly, things are hard, and gets harder at times. But it will only be easier when we accept and be ready to deal with it."
Now, with the knowledge of the extent of Shifu's care for him, Jiang Cheng treasure these words as he prepares to depart Cloud Recesses.
"My shi is open for you always, Jiang Wanyin. I hope to see you soon."
That was Lan Qiren's parting words to him as he leaves.
Maybe... he'll plan his next visit.
II. Build a new bridge when the former burned down
Jiang Cheng sighed when he entered his shi. He plopped down on his bed, feeling lazy tired. But it's just afternoon, sect matters were far from over. He just went to take a break. When he breathed, he slowly eased his clenched hands trying to release some tension in his body.
He stood, went over the chest drawers and pulled out a cloth. His eyes lingered at the displayed sword. His eyes narrowed to it, he contemplated, he sighed, then grabbed the sheathe and walked back to his bed.
He pulled his sword out of its sheathe and began cleaning it. He just cleaned it this morning. He hadn't even unsheathed it once. He saw his reflection from the glistening sharp edge of the sword. He deliberately wiped it with the cloth he took. From the engravings on the hilt to the tip of his sword. Then doing the same on its sheathe. The familiar gesture washing him with peace. He finds the up and down motions quite soothing. When fully satisfied, he placed it beside him.
He reached out to Suibian almost mindlessly and he unsheathed the sword, mimicking his gesture from before.
The weight still felt strange. The sensation was also different.
Jiang Cheng paused and stared at the sword with wonder. He twisted his wrist, left and right to test the weight. He made a slash motion and he shivered when he felt a tickle in his stomach where his current golden core is.
He scowled. Yeah, Wei Wuxian's golden core. He quickly finished cleaning Suibian and hurriedly placed it back in place. All the while Jiang Cheng was scolding himself.
Just what the fuck are you doing A-Cheng? Why do you still make efforts in cleaning that damn sword along side yours? You are being an idiot!
After more curses and scolding of himself, he left his quarters to continue his day. He doesn't want another fucking thought of his "donated" golden core.
The next day, Jiang Cheng received an invitation to visit Qinghe Nie from Sect Leader Nie with the intention unrelated to Sect matters. Jiang Cheng frowned at this. It's freaking winter and Sect Leader Nie invites him to Qinghe Nie for what? Tea party? Bonfire stories? Fucking nonsense.
He didn't answer to the invitation and let it sit in his table until it was buried beneath the pending letters. Winter has started already. The day is cold, the night is drizzling with light snow covering Lotus Pier. Because of this, there are lesser people visiting Lotus Pier, more letters coming in, and more time for Jiang Cheng to stay cooped up in the warmth of his shi.
It was more than a week when another letter came in from Sect Leader Nie. The contents are now more personal. Asking how Jiang Cheng's been. How is the sect, or his nephew et cetera. He gripped the letter tight and again set it aside. This time he grabbed a parchment to write on.
Lan-shifu, he started, I've been receiving letters from Sect Leader Nie. I'm unsure on how to respond. And also wary if I'm just another fool he wanted to play around. Maybe Shifu have something to advice.
He folded the paper neatly and sealed it before calling a messenger to deliver it to Master Lan.
It is not unusual anymore. At first he doesn't know what to make of it when a letter sealed in cloud pattern appeared in his desk. He just... accepted it. At first he was being polite, just answering the inquiry of the elder. Until he also included small matters of his own. And soon, he just randomly sends letter even for small trivial things like this.
By dusk he received an answer.
Wanyin, how do you really feel regarding the matter? Was it so strong that you could blatantly refuse? Or maybe there's even a small hope for the possibility of rekindled friendship? Sect Leader Nie is a complexity of a man. I cannot fully say what his intentions are. But I could only advice for my sheng** : building a new bridge is better than leaving the ruined bridge, because it takes one side to cross to the other side.
Jiang Cheng sighed at this. As always, Lan-shifu have the wisest words. But it didn't give him the answer he wanted.
He stood up and decided to stretch his limbs. There's still sun outside based on the light filtering inside his shi from the window. He took his sword and stopped. He glanced at the other sword displayed. He pursed his lips and walked out.
He found the training field empty. Not a surprise to the Jiang Sect leader. Because at this time, training was over early before anyone could freeze to death. But Jiang Cheng has other plans. He had a sudden impulse to train with his sword. On his recent night hunts, he mostly use Zidian rather than his sword. Jiang Cheng was not really ambidextrous. His right is a dominant one and he often used it to wield Zidian than Sandu.
And so he pulled off the sleeves of his robe and tied it around his waist. He commanded Zidian to crawl up his arm and wrap itself around his upper arm. Cool air seeping through his second layer of undershirt. He unsheathed his sword and took a stance, before practicing their Jiang sword techniques.
Every movement was swift, with every intent to kill. He used small spiritual energy to help him wield properly causing purple sparks arcing with him. He corrected his posture, his hold, his techniques, and every small flaw he piqued. When his lungs burned of lack of oxygen, it's then he decided to pause.
He shifted the sword on his left, testing the weight and doing basic techniques. Light, easy, less pressure and intent. The strain was unfamiliar but he welcomed it. He practiced his left, keeping right arm on his back. And continued, until nightfall where the winds were much colder and he trembled.
The next day, he sent a message to Sect Leader Nie. Expect my company in three days.
And so after two days, he brought a few Jiang disciples and they set out towards Qinghe. The travel was far longer than to Gusu it took them morning to late afternoon before they reached Qinghe Nie.
Jiang Cheng doesn't know what to expect. Of course, he didn't let his guard down. The famous Sandu Shengshou must not be caught off guard, especially in an unknown territory. Nie disciples guided them through to several halls of gray. It didn't go unnoticed to him that there were paintings covering the bland color of the walls. His eyes lingered for a bit before he continued.
As usual, he was in a state of anxiousness. He doesn't know what to expect of Sect Leader Nie. After the incident in the Guanyin Temple, he had an assumption all that happened prior to that day, there's definitely a grand master who lead all the people to places and moved the pieces. He never confirmed his suspicions, he just... made sure that he won't cross paths with those people. He wanted a peaceful life for once. Not a life lived in foolishness and longing--though this last one, will it ever be gone?
"Sect Leader Nie, Sect Leader Sandu Shengshou has arrived." One disciple announces his arrival and he was gestured to enter the private study of the Sect Leader Nie. He frowned at the setting.
Even as when the doors closed behind him he stood there like a stupid just watching the Sect Leader before him, paints.
"Sect Leader Nie." He greeted, an attempt to get the attention of the the man before him.
"Hm," he put his brush down and stood up to face his visitor. "Sect Leader Jiang, please have a seat!"
His smile, should Jiang Cheng be wary of it? He followed, sitting in a lotus position and the Sect Leaders faced each other.
Sect Leader Nie Huaisang smiled, his demeanor relaxed, his eyes crinkling at the edges. Jiang Cheng was tight lipped, alert and filled with tension with his eyes narrowing.
"Sect Leader Jiang, it was nice of you to heed my invitation." He reached for a pot of tea to pour into their cups.
"Why did you invite me here?" His voice low and full of guard, going straight to the point.
"I don't know," he shrugged, saying his famous line but Jiang Cheng saw the glint in his eyes, and he felt like throwing shit at this man before him. "Aren't you here, in the same reasons why I invited you in the first place?"
By this time, Jiang Cheng wanted to throw everything and stomped off. This is useless. It is a waste of time coming here. Building bridges be damned.
Another thought filtered in his mind, "it will only be easier if we accept and be ready to deal with it."
He sighed, and had the urge to pinch his nose out of frustration. He knows, it's impolite gesture. So he kept his attitude in check.
"Nie Huaisang," because change in name calling is the first step, he convinces himself, "if we really both have the same intent on why we are here today... can I ask for one thing?"
The man with his eyes clear of misgivings shone affirmation in them. Because he wanted to have this too. For a man like him who depended so much on a single figure his brother had been, he missed that. He missed the people he lost in this lifetime. If could keep someone close to him in this lifetime by just answering that question. Why not.
"Of course, Jiang Wanyin."
"Nie Huaisang I only asked you to be genuine and candid."
Hearing this, a smile broke in his lips, "That's easy Jiang Wanyin. Much easier now that I've decided to let it all go."
Jiang Cheng let out a loud sigh. He will trust his word from now on. It wouldn't be as smooth but this was a start. They will lay out a strong foundation again, now with the years of experience and not some childish and naive foundation.
"Well, let us toast to rebuilding a new bridge." Nie Huaisang raised his cup of tea, but Jiang Cheng being Jiang Cheng, he eyed the cup warily and shook his head.
"Not so fast. I'd rather have the tea I brought from Yunmeng."
Nie Huaisang laughed and let the other Sect leader do what he wanted. It's a start.
III. Keep your friends close, but your family closer
Even though it's morning, the clouds covered the sun and blew wind in Lotus Pier. The training field only had a few disciples still diligently practicing. Since days had been colder and colder, training have been suspended but he mandated a specific target hours for each to do every week. Of course, for a Sect Leader to be followed, he must show his disciples that he, too, doesn't slack off. He stood on the side holding a sword in his left as he watched his disciples spar.
Jiang Cheng woke up this morning, feeling different. He felt ready to face the day and so, he grabbed Suibian instead of Sandu and head for the training field. He dressed casually today because he intended to spend time in training. He warmed up, stretching his limbs and twisting his wrist in the new weight he carried.
He ignored the stares of his disciple and proceeded to wield the sword in his hand. Like before, every movement he felt a sensation that crawled up his arm and to his golden core. It distracted him a bit. Because not only the sensation flooded him but memories, echoes of memories.
The sword sealed itself and no one can wield it except its master.
He slashed, his face contorted in a fiery frown.
Pull the sword! See for yourself!
Gathering his rising frustration and anger, he decided to unleash the nasty feeling. He made a powerful technique, reaching from deep down the core and pushing outwards. A beautiful magenta arcing at the tip of the sword. Several gasps were heard and even Jiang Cheng was surprised at the unfamiliar bright light.
This was a high grade spiritual tool, it recognized its owner. He knows that was not what Suibian's aura is. It should be blazing red, like an untamed fire. But now with a flash of a powerful arc, the sword showed a different energy.
Anyone on the field stopped, everyone stared and Jiang Cheng couldn't careless, he threw the sword on the ground as he stepped back. He's panicking in his mind.
What the fuck happened?! What was that?! Heavens what WAS THAT!!! How is it possible?
He stood there bewildered while slowly people dispersed, giving their Sect Leader some space--rather getting away from the raging emotions flashing in his face. Hurried footsteps are approaching him but he never took his eyes off his hands. He was wielding the sword with two hands when the light showed itself. It came from the core.
"Jiu-jiu, jiu-jiu!" It was Jin Ling. He arrived from Carp Tower with the intent to spend a few days here in Lotus Pier. He witnessed a few moves from his uncle before the shining light happened.
He was also shocked. He never saw the aura of the sword Suibian. Yes, he's well aware it was used before by Wen Ning, but it wasn't used with spiritual power. Now the awe and surprise had caught him off guard but the reaction he saw from his jiu-jiu showed that isn't what he was expecting.
"Jiu-jiu? What happened? Are you alright?" Jin Ling asked as he picked up the abandoned sword. This seemed to bring Jiang Cheng out of his trance.
"A-Ling?"
"What are you doing, Jiu-jiu?"
Jiang Cheng frowned and took the sword from Jin Ling. "I should be asking you that! Why the heck are you here?"
"Ah! I came here to spend a few days in Lotus Pier! It's becoming lonely and boring in Carp Tower. Also, I'm supposed to be here since the other day, yet a senior disciple told me you aren't back from Qinghe."
Both men walked back to the chambers.
"What are you doing in Qinghe by the way? Is Sect Leader Nie bothering you?"
It was not lost on Jin Ling, even though he's still young, he could pick-up a thing or two without having to know the whole picture. He and Jingyi have discussed it surreptitiously among themselves during night hunts. Sect Leader Nie, may or may not, have been the mastermind of the grand scheme that led to what happened in Guanyin Temple.
If he could do something like that, just how dangerous is he?
"Jiu-jiu answer me!!! What have you been doing in Qinghe? On what reasons are you visiting that city for days???"
"Building bridges."
"What?!"
Jiang Cheng sighed, it seemed that his nephew got nothing to do and decided to find his entertainment here. He entered his shi and placed the sword beside his bed. He intended to have a quick shower, just to gather his thoughts. But Jin Ling seemed to have other plans. He followed behind Jiang Cheng still bombarding him with questions. When Jiang Cheng reached his wash area he turned around and Jin Ling stopped too.
"What?"
"What do you mean "what"?! I'm going to take a shower you brat!!! Do you want to take it with me?!"
Jin Ling's face turned red and he ran out his shi shouting, "I'll be in my shi! Call for me after you finish jiu-jiu!!!"
With Jiang Cheng finally left alone, he let his mind wander to what happened earlier. His body went through his usual ministrations, until he felt clean. He walked back to his bed well-dressed and fresh but his inside isn't. He doesn't feel as good as this morning. He stared at the sword before him. He held the hilt and unsheathed a part until he saw the engraving Suibian on its blade.
For all those years he wielded Sandu and Zidian, he never realized the change in power. He thought he finally grew stronger, even fooled himself that he finally reached the peak of his cultivation. Only to be revealed that what he has now was a sacrifice from his hated adopted brother.
He used Zidian with spiritual power to whip the people practicing demonic cultivation or that who he presumed possessed the spirit of his brother. How ironic and disgusting of him. There really is no shame when it comes to his hatred.
There's a nasty burn of shame in his heart. He has the golden core of who once was a prodigy of the cultivation world. Even after death, even after reincarnation, how can Wei Wuxian still make him see he's unmatched to him? He's a fucking Sect Leader, and a temporary caretaker of Lanling Jin Sect, not until Jin Ling's coming of age. How can that bastard still make him feel he would never be enough?!
Jiang Cheng shuddered, his breaths seesawing in his chest. His hands trembled with the sword he grasped tightly in his hands.
Wei Wuxian how could you still do this to me?! Why should I be always so affected? Why are you cursing me to this endless torment?! Why even though we lived different lives now, I'm still attached to you? Why can't I have the gut to just completely cut you off my life?!
Hot tears fell on his cheeks. The mighty Sandu Shengshou is kneeling in the middle of his bedchamber, clutching the sword of his adopted brother. He cried for his broken soul that'll never be mended. He cried for all his loses. He cried for the things he could never have. He cried for the things and people he could have had if he ever just... opened his heart again.
The scene would have stopped anyone on their tracks, the broken sob and cry would have sent shivers down their spine at how sad and hurtful it sounded.
Jin Ling stood outside his uncle's shi, fighting back tears. He never really went far. He paced outside his uncle's shi because he was really, really curious about what happened at the training field and why his uncle was in Qinghe for days. He didn't expect to hear cries coming from his uncle's shi.
He wanted to rush in and to ask his uncle what happened. However, as soon as he got a glimpse of his uncle, clutching at Suibian close to his chest, Jin Ling quietly closed the door again and stood outside. He sent a message to the Jiang disciples to stay away from this area.
A blurred memory resurfaced on his head. He was so young back then, he was looking for his uncle. He found him at the Ancestral Hall, a black flute in his hand as he kowtowed and cried silently in front of the ancestors. What young Jin Ling did then was to approach his uncle and hugged him. Now though, even the thought made his face red. He shouldn't even be just standing here. Every cry he hear was like someone ripping at his chest. He breathed out keeping his own tears at bay and opened the door.
Jiang Cheng's cry quieted down a bit but he's now curled like a ball on the floor despite him having finished a bath. Jin Ling's footsteps were quiet, but never unheard. He sat by the head of his uncle and waited.
Jiang Cheng slowly moved and rested his head on his nephew's lap. Jin Ling wanted to disappear in embarrassment but he swallowed the impulse and instead, produced a handkerchief from his sleeves before gently wiping the remaining tear streaks in his uncle's face.
Jin Ling was still baffled at seeing his uncle like this. His uncle raised him, he'd only seen him this broken and vulnerable on the Guanyin Temple, where he confronted Wei Wuxian about the core. Is it because of that, and what happened to the training field?
He frowned at the sword, now it lay limped and abandoned by the floor. You bring trouble to my jiu-jiu even if you're not here, Wei-qianbei. Are you even remotely aware of the torment you put my jiu-jiu through?
A rising old anger in his heart at all the things he remembered about Wei Wuxian. He was living off happily with Hanguang-Jun, traveling all over the world. While his uncle is always stuck in Lotus Pier, only leaving when there are important matters to attend to. Or if he trailed after Jin Ling during his night hunts with a couple of Lan disciples. Because he doesn't want to even catch a glimpse of Wei Wuxian.
"A-Ling..." Jiang Cheng tried to speak. He sensed more than saw the thrumming anger in his nephew.
"Jiu-jiu, are you okay now?"
Jiang Cheng rose and shifted to sit facing Jin Ling. He looked disheveled, but who cares? It's just the two of them.
"A-Ling... I know I'm not the best parent-figure and I'll never be like shijie. But I tried..." eyes filling with tears, Jiang Cheng has to say it. "I tried my best to raise you just as how she would like you to become."
Jin Ling's lips trembled, his brows furrowed. "Why are you saying something like this jiu-jiu!?"
"You're all that I have A-Ling..." a few tears slipped from his eyes again.
"You will grow-up some more and have more friends in your life. Then, you will take over Lanling Jin Sect and rule it like how your father would. You will find a person to love deeply like how your mother loved your father. Live the life that was taken away from your parents... don't be like me A-Ling. Don't be like jiu-jiu who will be left alone until he dies."
Jin Ling sobbed and threw himself to hug Jiang Cheng by his shoulders. He shook his head repeatedly.
"I-I will not! Jiu-jiu will not be alone. Jiu-jiu is never alone! A-Ling is here. A-Ling is always here."
A sudden epiphany came over Jiang Cheng as he embraced his nephew.
He remembered the same thing happened when he mourned in front of his Ancestors while clutching at Chenqing. His nephew hugged him when no one comforted him. It was his nephew who was there to help him get through each day even though he didn't realize it. Even a series of events had shaken them up, it was his nephew who was constantly there.
No matter what, he cannot deny Jin Ling. He's his nephew in blood, his sister's blood, his very own family. Why was he speaking nonsense. A-Ling will never rid of him even though he got married and build his own family. He broke away from Jin Ling and wiped his nephew's snot and tears with his hands.
"Stop crying now Jin Ling. You can't rid of me, you understand? I know that now."
Jin Ling sniffed and nodded, then punching him lightly. "Jiu-jiu, don't say nonsense again! I'll be the one to break your legs if you do!"
Jiang Cheng only chuckled and they both silently gotten up. Jiang Cheng grabbed Suibian from the floor and stared at it.
Why was he letting himself be subjected to such torment? Why was he still letting Wei Wuxian get a hold of him? The other have finally moved on in his life. Why can't he? Why was he the only one that should be happy? Jiang Cheng's been fine the past weeks. He'd accepted Lan-shifu's support, Huaisang's friendship, and his nephew's unending devotion.
Why should he let a damned golden core break him? Wei Wuxian gave it to him. It is his now. He gripped the sword's hilt tightly, he felt like he had a breakthrough and the light at the end of the tunnel seemed brighter now.
"Jiu-jiu, I saw what happened earlier. The energy of the sword was pretty amazing and looks powerful. Is it really how it is?
"Yes, the fact that it only recognizes it's owner was a clear indication that's its a powerful spiritual tool. Though it isn't the usual aura." He went to fetch a clean cloth and his sword Sandu before they both sat on his bed.
"When Wei Wuxian and I fought side by side, his was red and mine was purple."
"But.."
"Yeah, I was surprised too. Maybe because my aura has really been purple and his was red. Maybe it came out as a mix of both?"
Jin Ling's eyes sparkled. It was incredible! He's never really saw or heard of this happening. He looked down at the sword in his uncle's hand as he deliberately run the cloth over the hilt and blade. He wondered, Jiu-jiu, despite not knowing or admitting it, he is just a sentimental person. He kept the Chenqing then and now this.
"What are you going to do now?"
"Well, since I have it now. It's mine now. Why not make most of it and practice my hand in this?"
Jin Ling nodded eagerly, "Let's spar sometime Jiu-jiu!"
Jiang Cheng smiled.
Lan-shifu, does any of the books in your library tells anything about spiritual tools changing it's own aura? I may or may not have tried to practice wielding Suibian. It happened that with the touch of the golden core I have, the spiritual power it exudes changed too.
Also, I may or may not have gained a friend.
Wanyin-sheng, I haven't heard of the spiritual tools changing aura. If you have free time, visit Cloud Recesses and let's both take a look.
I am happy of the choice you made, it has gained you a friend. It's probably best if I visit Lotus Pier by the end of this year. If my sheng would allow? Talking face to face would be much easier.
Lan-shifu, just send me a message when you are to depart to Lotus Pier.
IV. Acceptance is hard, but moving on will be much easier after.
Jiang Cheng prepared two of Lotus Pier's prestigious guest chambers for his two important guests.
Master Lan Qiren had finally declared his arrival in Lotus Pier will be this afternoon. While Nie Huaisang had sent him a message two days back that tomorrow morning he will arrive.
After the first visit of Jiang Cheng in Qinghe Nie, a series of letters were sent back and forth between the Sect Leaders--now close to friends. Most of these consisted of Nie Huaisang whining to him that his disciples were not following his orders for training. Jiang Cheng sent a few notes on Training Disciples 101. He was hesitant at first because his methods may appear rougher than what Nie Huaisang used. Nie Huaisang replied back telling him he would definitely use the notes he gave him.
Now, Jiang Cheng had opened up about his own administration to his friend. Surprisingly, Nie Huaisang may not excel in cultivation, but his administration skills are excellent. Hence, Nie Huaisang insisted on coming to Lotus Pier to personally inspect his administration before giving Jiang Cheng his thoughts.
Jiang Cheng was highly suspicious of Nie Huaisang inviting himself to Lotus Pier, but he also accepted it. He just didn't know if the timing was right. A Lan and a Nie coming into his Sect. Oh, plus his nephew who didn't go back to Carp Tower when he knew of his guests.
"Jiu-jiu, since when were you acquainted with Elder Lan and Sect Leader Nie? Why are they visiting?"
"Can't I invite people over to Lotus Pier?"
"Of course you can! Alright, Elder Lan is fine. But SECT LEADER NIE!"
"So?"
Jin Ling stopped in his rambling and looked around. "Jiu-jiu, I didn't think you'd be that dense!"
"Why don't you just shut up, and train? They are my visitors not yours!"
"But Jiu-jiu, didn't you hear?"
"Hear what?!" Jiang Cheng was growing irritated at Jin Ling who circled around the subject.
"There's a conspiracy rumor that Sect Leader Nie had set up everything that happened in Guanyin Temple! If that was true, he can't be trusted Jiu-jiu!!" Jin Ling whisper-hissed at him.
Jiang Cheng frowned at this. He didn't know his nephew was picking up gossips and rumors. Like this. He raised his brow.
"And where did you hear this? Have you been going around with those Lan disciples and Ouyang kid again?"
"They've got nothing to do with this! Also, I'm not a kid anymore! I don't need to filter out whatever gossips I hear."
"You aren't a kid anymore that's right. So you should know better than to listen to those rumors."
"But Jiu-jiu--!"
"One more nonsense Jin Ling, I'll break your legs! I haven't seen you train since you arrived here, you slacking off again?!"
The young man only groaned and stomped his feet. "It's winter!!"
"So? Winter doesn't mean you stop training. Follow the schedule I gave the senior disciples."
Jin Ling's face was twisted in frown and frustration. He knew he cannot argue with his uncle about his training.
Lan Qiren arrived and both Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling greeted him. They had an afternoon tea and talked for a while. When Jin Ling excused himself, Lan Qiren and Jiang Cheng started talking about informal things.
"May I see what you're referring to in your letter, sheng?"
Jiang Cheng swallowed before he reached for Suibian and invited Lan Qiren outside.
"Shifu, I have been practicing my left hand in wielding suibian." He felt a little embarrassed at what he's saying. He felt like a young man telling stories about his discovery.
"I'm not known to be ambidextrous. And since I have Zidian, I always used it more than my sword. I started practicing my hands again in sword techniques. Right now, I can wield on my left alone without the aid of my right." He rambled like a young teen.
Lan Qiren didn't seem to be bothered by his rant and so Jiang Cheng continued his story.
"The first time I tried Suibian was also the same time different aura was seen."
"Mn, may I see what you did then?"
Jiang Cheng nodded, he walked farther into the field and braced himself. He made a few warm ups on his left hand with right hand on the back. When he began, Lan Qiren watched carefully.
He really admired this young man. Who would've thought he would choose this path? He could just ignore the sword in his treasury but here he is, practicing his dexterity. Unlocking possibilities with his new found ability.
Lan Qiren's eye twitched when he saw the kind of light that flashed when Jiang Cheng arced the sword. A burst of wind and energy was sent outwards, making the robes of Lan Qiren sway from it and the bells in Lotus Pier to tingle. Jiang Cheng doesn't look even a slightest bit winded. But Lan Qiren knew, it was a pure spiritual energy. He waited until the young man finished before calling him to his side.
He reached out to Jiang Cheng's left hand and felt his pulse and spiritual energy. Lan Qiren could feel the thrum of spiritual energy until it reached inside Jiang Cheng. It was full and rich. He reached for the right, and does the same. He felt the same, abundant flow of energy that's very healthy.
"Wanyin, I sense nothing different to your energy."
"Then why does it appear different now?"
"Let's talk inside, it's starting to snow."
After they have seated themselves again, Lan Qiren began to speak.
"What I thought is only mere speculation from my current knowledge. I don't have a medical ability to fully understand what happened." He leveled his stare to Jiang Cheng.
"It wasn't unknown that high-grade spiritual tools do only recognize their owners. You know this."
Jiang Cheng nodded, caressing the ring on his finger.
"Suibian is one of this and most of the time, spiritual tools are connected to its core and qi." Lan Qiren stroked his beard as he thinks deeply. Remembering the texts he've read about spiritual tools.
"Even though other people do not practice cultivation, a certain amount of qi is still circulating in a human body. That's why us, we cultivate a golden core to access and help us control the qi energy in our body. In your case, since you were a cultivator and had a strong core before it was gone, the qi in your body just went dormant and unreachable."
Jiang Cheng nodded again, he knows this. He wondered why he didn't even thought of this possibility.
"Since we cultivated with the qi inside our body, the golden core that was formed contained also the same qi. Then, when the core transfer was done, the qi the golden core originated was Wei Wuxian's. My qi was again accessible because of the presence of the golden core. And whenever I cultivate or train, the Qi that entered the golden core was mine and it mixed up with the original qi of the core."
Jiang Cheng was bewildered. He felt like his head was gonna explode. It's not a complicated news or knowledge, its just that he never thought it actually happened to him. And he never realized what's happening. Just how dumb is he?!
"Mn, that's the closest thing we got." Lan Qiren lifted a cup of tea to his lips and take a sip as he watched his sheng to process.
"Shifu, do you think it will eventually turn purple?"
"No."
Jiang Cheng nodded a frown creasing his eyebrows.
"Zidian didn't change, so did Sandu."
"It's because both tools are yours, they draw energy only from your qi. Suibian could recognize the core inside of you and your qi. It draws from both."
Again, Jiang Cheng nodded like he really understood or it really makes sense to him.
"Wanyin, you're doing well. I'm proud of you. And I thank you for letting me stay." Lan Qiren said this then excused himself. He knew Jiang Cheng needed time by himself.
After that and until the next day, Jiang Cheng wasn't seen outside of his chambers. Even Jin Ling wasn't able to draw him out of his room.
In truth, Jiang Cheng just laid on his bed and thought about... things.
The talk with Lan Qiren left him both contemplative and not throwing a fit. The knowledge-- that he should've figured out the moment he saw the aura-- was what he'd been thinking.
Does this change anything? Not really. Wei Wuxian's golden core gave way for him to access his qi again. It gave him another opportunity to be the Sect Leader he's meant to be. Wei Wuxian gave him another chance in life, in pursuing what Jiang Cheng had valued all his life. Be the Sect Leader his parents would be proud of. His validation... must it really depend on Wei Wuxian? The thing about Suibian was just a small issue. Yet, at the same time it also opened his eyes--his heart, to what his brother had told him before.
"Forget it. It's all in the past now..."
"...It's been too long. There's no need to struggle with it any longer."
Jiang Cheng wanna laugh at himself at the same time cry again. Why does he feel funny? He wanna hold on to his grievances and grudges at the same time, he could feel the chains loosen. He doesn't need anyone's approval for him to be who he is now, to have what he have now. It was his time, effort, devotion that he gave to reach where he was now.
He took a deep breath and slowly released it.
Did you feel this way Wei Wuxian? When you said it's already in the past, were your heart also like this? Like you can breathe now. I can breathe now.
He cannot fully say all was forgiven because what was there to forgive? They both had done sacrifices of their own, toward each other or not. Jiang Cheng can only start forgiving himself. Jiang Cheng was, admittedly, blinded by his own rage and insecurity and a lot more self-deprecating things. He's... working on that.
Overall, it was easier for Jiang Cheng to get up, and prepare himself to face another day.
V. Now, you don't have to be alone anymore
Huaisang arrived the next morning just as he said so. Jiang Cheng together with Lan Qiren and Jin Ling, greeted the guest. As usual, Sect Leader Nie closed his fan and saluted. The three followed suit.
"Jiang Sect welcomes you to Lotus Pier."
After the greeting, the entourage was led to the visiting area of Lotus Pier. They were served tea and light snacks. Jin Ling was quiet on his side, while Lan Qiren listened to the small casual discussion between Jiang Wanyin and Nie Huaisang.
"Jiang Wanyin, if you wouldn't mind, I'll be staying here until after New Year."
"Why would--"
Jiang Cheng only glared at Jin Ling who pursed his lips and kept quiet.
"You are free to stay here until then. Do what you must do for the matters we've discussed."
"Yes, yes." He turned to other people to address them. "Elder Master Lan and Young Master Jin, if Jiang Wanyin hasn't explained, I'll be helping him organize his administrative's structure."
Jiang Cheng nodded, "Yes, I've found out the Qinghe Nie's administrative structure is much more organized and cohesive. I've asked Nie Huaisang to come over for this."
Lan Qiren, "So I have heard. Sect Leader Nie, I would also like to discuss this in behalf of Gusu Lan Sect, if you have time during our stay in Lotus Pier."
Nie Huaisang covered half of his face using his fan. He looking at Lan Qiren with a bit of strain in his eyes. Jiang Cheng understood that it is also not easy for Nie Huaisang to throw himself back into the world.
"Of course, it's a pleasure Elder Master Lan." He lowered his hand and closed the fan. "Jiang Wanyin, I would like to start soon, could tomorrow be alright?"
Jiang Cheng thought a bit. "Yes, tomorrow shouldn't need much of my attention. Do you need me to be there?"
"Hm, of course, you know your Sect better. And maybe Elder Master Lan could also accompany us?"
Lan Qiren only nodded and Jin Ling just watched the exchange in front of him. A little confused and frustrated, he wanted to ask his jiu-jiu about this!
Lan Qiren excused himself first and retreated to his chamber. Jiang Wanyin toured Nie Huaisang around Lotus Pier with Jin Ling following behind.
"Jiang Wanyin, there's nothing much changed since the last that I'm here. I couldn't even remember when that is." He laughed behind his hand.
"Well, it's not always that I get visitors. So I didn't think much of renovating or doing some changes here."
"Right! But the snow just made this whole place different. I didn't think Lotus Pier could be as calm and white as this."
What he said was true. Jiang Cheng looked around. Yunmeng could be one of the hottest place during summer, but doesn't mean it couldn't be covered in snow during winter. The roofs are dusted in white from the light snowfall this morning. The grass and grounds are the same. They saw a few disciples scraping snow from the pathways.
"Lotus Pier could be so green during spring and summer, orange and red in autumn, and white and brown during winter. Jiang Wanyin, can I come here during these seasons and paint?"
"Of course, why not? You'll find somethings in your bedchamber for it."
Nie Huaisang flapped his fan a little bit faster. "You are so generous Jiang Wanyin. Gladly, I will, and might start now! Come on, lead me to my chamber!"
Nie Huaisang walked faster and Jiang Cheng just followed behind, letting Jin Ling catch up to him.
"What are you pouting now, A-Ling?"
"Because jiu-jiu is being stupid!"
Jiang Cheng stopped in his tracks to frown at Jin Ling.
"What did you say?"
"Think about it jiu-jiu, how could you be friends with someone like him?! He schemed for Yao-shu-shu*** to be killed, led people around like play things to get what he wanted. Didn't you think of what he wanted now? Getting close to you? Making friends with Elder Lan?!"
Jin Ling was so frustrated. Why can't his jiu-jiu see that person is up to no good?! It was the way he hid himself behind those stupid fan.
"Jin Ling," his voice was stern, "who's letting you eat those shit?!"
"No one's feeding me anything! It's what I see jiu-jiu! The way he hid himself for so long, why is he just coming out and showing his "true-self"?!"
"Is that what you're learning from the Lan disciples?! Is that what Wei Wuxian and Hanguang-jun told you?!"
"I told you, no one said anything!"
"Do you even know what you're talking about?! This is a Sect Leader that you are accusing of!"
"..."
"Listen, and listen to me only Jin Ling." He grabbed the shoulders of his nephew. He took deep breaths to prevent himself from bursting.
"I know, being around him stirs-up different emotions, memories, and it's hard to paint him differently when you've seen a bad side of him." He doesn't want to raise this but he had to let his nephew know.
"Jin Guangyao had also done bad things in his life. But you've painted him as an uncle that never intended to hurt you, who also looked after you as you grow. You can... you can never really hate him right? Despite all the things that had been revealed."
Jin Ling's lips tremble and he pursed his lips. Fighting back tears as memories of his other uncle assaulted his brain.
"All I'm saying is that, me too. I've witnessed people, even my own adopted brother, do both good and bad in their lives. But they still had been a friend and a brother to me that one time. I'm risking my trust again, Jin Ling. Because I'm not a better person that any of them."
"Whatever it is you're seeing or hearing, those may or may not be true unless you've heard it from the person itself. No matter what he's done in the past, what dark scheme he'd conjured up, don't we all deserve a second chance?"
Jin Ling turned away and ran back to his quarters. Jiang Cheng let him. His nephew had his own way of dealing with his grief. That's how he saw it. Jin Ling saw Nie Huaisang as the main conspirator against his other uncle and eventually sent him to his end. He might not be favorable to Jin Guangyao at the end, but those years of them trying to raise Jin Ling together, he saw the man to be good to Jin Ling.
Nie Huaisang was waiting outside his bedchamber slowly fanning himself. Jiang Cheng noticed he had a faraway look in his eyes. He's not sure if he heard or witnessed anything.
"Is there something that didn't please you?"
"None, the place was to my liking, Jiang Wanyin."
They stood there in silence. Jiang Cheng thought of what his nephew said. He never confirmed to Nie Huaisang any of his own speculations. Once he accepted a start in friendship, he also decided to just let it be. Let it remain in the past.
"Wanyin...xiong****." Huaisang hesitated with what he said. But he just wanted to call someone like that again.
Jiang Cheng didn't speak or do any action that protested against the name calling. So Huaisang tried again.
"Wanyin-xiong, do you think people are capable of turning back to the way they were in the past?"
Jiang Cheng let the soft breeze, the light chimes of the bells, to fill in the silence between them. He didn't answer right away. He let the words in his head swirl. Lan-shifu had mentioned something like this. Maybe he can start from that.
"Lan-shifu once said to me, "Things have changed, seasons had had changed so much. We have changed so much." If so much had already changed, why would we waste time in thinking of going back to the way we were in the past? Does Nie Huaisang have anything he wanted to go back for?"
Huaisang paused, pondering for a second, "Not really, Wanyin-xiong. I think, people really have a tendency to look back and compare the life before to their life now; instead of their life in the present and the life they wanted in the future."
Jiang Cheng nodded. Because people found comfort in what they know now, but are scared of what they don't.
"Anyway, thank you for you time Wanyin-xiong. I'll rest for now." Huaisang stepped back and saluted. Jiang Cheng did the same. But before Jiang Cheng could completely, turn the corner, Huaisang's voice drifted to him, "Don't be too harsh on Young Master Jin. He's still young like we once were, and dealing with loses are different on each person."
Jiang Cheng sighed.
Lotus Pier, despite being covered in white, was colorful with the presence of three other members of different sects. There were days that are colder than the others. Jiang Cheng took a break from duties during this times. He had spent it either sitting with Lan Qiren and Nie Huaisang or arguing with Jin Ling. On the days it weren't as cold, Jiang Cheng spent it training his hands--now wielding both swords-- with the senior disciples willing to spar with him. Also, discussing administrative matters with Nie Huaisang and Lan Qiren. More often than not, Jin Ling trailed behind Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang. Jiang Cheng knew his nephew has his own issues to resolve himself, but he was proud that he isn't throwing a fit anymore. He also noticed his nephew's participation whenever they are discussing small sect matters.
"Jiu-jiu, I'm bored! Can't we go on a hunt?" Jin Ling complained.
"If you're bored, why not go back to Carp Tower and start dealing with Sect matters?"
"Jiu-jiu!!" Jin Ling pouted like a child.
"Is that how a future Sect Leader should be?! Jin Ling, you've been slacking off for days now!" Jiang Cheng raised his voice. Jin Ling only frowned and pouted.
"Wanyin-sheng, calm down." Lan Qiren spoke. "Let Jin-gongzi enjoy his childhood. He is still young to take on responsibilities. You are the person who knows this the most, aside from my nephews."
Jin Ling nodded at every word and Jiang Cheng scowled at him.
"It is one thing that I regret. I've been too strict and uptight to my nephews since they were young. They never experienced living freely like any other children. So early in their life, they've lost so much and taken too much responsibility. I wish that Wanyin-sheng, considers this for Jin-gongzi."
Jiang Cheng doesn't know how to counter what Lan-shifu had said. I mean, how can he even go against his shifu? What he said was true, he among all people had experienced to be shoved into a responsibility at such a young age.
"Don't worry, Wanyin-xiong, we will help Jin-gongzi when he is to take over Jin Sect." Nie Huaisang reassured him. There's nothing more he could say.
"Jin-gongzi, are you ready for your studies in Cloud Recesses?" Nie Huaisang had a pleasant expression when he asked this.
Jin Ling pursed his lips as he noticed all three seniors looking at him. "Who said I'm not ready? I'll be fine Sect Leader Nie."
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes. "What kind of question is that Huaisang? He isn't like you."
There's an undeniable widening of eyes. "I don't know what you mean, Wanyin-xiong. I really don't know. I was a good student then, right Lan-shifu?"
"I can only say, it's not uncommon for students to be tempted to break the Lan's rules. It could, after all, be too much rules for others." Lan Qiren stroked his beard, but there was a glint in his eyes.
"I hope Jin-gongzi will be one of my good students just like these two."
Suddenly there's a loud sound of fan hitting flesh, Jiang Wanyin's to be precise.
"What?!"
"We were indeed good students Wanyin-xiong! I told you! All that, was nothing!"
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes again and his face grimaced. "It still made me wonder how you two sneaked jars of Emperor's Smile inside Cloud Recesses."
"And this is when, I'll excuse myself." Lan Qiren said, standing up and leaving the younger ones.
Nie Huaisang giggled behind his fan and there's a smirk in Jiang Cheng's mouth. Jin Ling was intrigued and he leaned closer to his jiu-jiu.
"Tell me stories when you were studying there jiu-jiu!"
"Hmp! If you do any of these things, I'll break your legs, Jin Ling! Understood?!"
Nie Huaisang laughed, and Jin Ling nodded excitedly at Jiang Cheng. The three spent the day talking about Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang's adventures in Cloud Recesses.
That was how Jiang Cheng spent the remaining days of the year. By the Eve of New Year, Lotus Pier held a banquet. He had a toast with Nie Huaisang, Lan Qiren, Jin Ling and Jiang disciples. Though only him and the Jiang disciples held wine in their cups. There were performances, food, and fireworks-- wherein Lan Qiren missed because of Gusu Lan's strict bed time.
After New Year, Lan-shifu and Nie Huaisang, said their thanks and bid their goodbye as they set out to go back to their own Sects. However, Jin Ling stayed longer in Lotus Pier, sometimes dragging some disciples to night hunt with him. Jiang Cheng go about his sect matters. Still, he's practicing his sword techniques, and not only once did he tried to wield both swords in night hunts. He was nervous at first, but when the first hunt went smoothly, only using Suibian and Sandu, Jiang Cheng delighted at his months long self-training.
"Jiu-jiu!! That was awesome!"
"Of course, I am!"
They both grinned at each other. "You did good too Jin Ling. But you need to practice more."
"Yes, jiu-jiu!"
Jiang Cheng had one of the disciples design a harness where he could place both sword across his back. And since then, Jiang Cheng traveled with two swords on his back.
VI. When life throws Wei Wuxian at you? You accept and move on
Who knew, Sect Leader Jiang and Sect Leader Nie will be seen standing side by side? What an unfamiliar sight to see.
A Sect Leader who was known to deliver the wrath of the heavens in a flick of his wrist, and also now a two famous swords strapped to his back. A known meek but sly Sect Leader who was rumored a conspirator against the late Jin Guangyao. They stood in Carp Tower's grand hall, looking condescendingly at the Elders of Jin Sect.
It was only a day since they arrived in Carp Tower. Nie Huaisang immediately went to work. He's expressionless but his hand flicking his fan was restless. Jin Sect Elders proved to be such a disappointment. There's just so much wrong in their administrative structure when Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng told him about it.
Jiang Cheng was not deeply involved in the administration of Jin Sect, he just helped in keeping those elders in line. It took a huge brainstorming done between him, Jin Ling and Nie Huaisang last night just to be able to restructure their administration. It led to what's happening right now. Of course, the elders were resistant, but Nie Huaisang didn't struggle or bat an eyelash to all their protests. Jiang Wanyin, stood beside his nephew, showing his absolute support to the decision bestowed.
In the end, the three of them sighed in both relief and displeasure. Jin Elders are really something, Jiang Cheng thought. At least with what Nie Huaisang proposed, approved by both Jin Ling and the elders, it'll keep a lot of people in line.
Now, Jin Ling's studies in Gusu will soon start. Nie Huaisang stayed to cheer on Jin Ling. Thankfully, Jin Ling never brought up what he thought of Huaisang again. Jiang Cheng thought Jin Ling had "tolerated" Huaisang's presence. He just stood on the side while watching Huaisang argue with what Jin Ling should and should not bring in Cloud Recesses.
"Jin-gongzi, believe me when I say, you need more than this to survive Cloud Recesses!!!"
"And I said otherwise, Sect Leader Nie! It's me who will be staying in Cloud Recesses. I know what to bring!"
Nie Huaisang held Jin Ling's arm and the other bristled at the contact, yet there was no way he was getting out Huaisang's hold.
"You have Lan friends, yes?"
"Yes..."
"Then, you are aware of a lot of things not allowed there right?!"
"Of course!"
"Then, listen to what I say. You have to bring this!" He gritted, raising a piece of cloth.
"And I said I don't need it!"
"How will you even enjoy your stay in Cloud Recesses when you wouldn't even attempt to have fun, Jin-gongzi?!"
Jiang Cheng raised his brow when his nephew sneaked a glance at him. He was patiently waiting for Jin Ling to prepare everything he needs, before they depart early morning to Gusu. He sighed when the argument was getting longer and annoying to him.
"Jin Ling, just take it! Do you two really have to argue for so long just for a piece of cloth?!"
"Wanyin-xiong, it isn't just a piece of cloth! It's a... deceiving kind of qiankun pouch."
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes. He tuned them out and decided to get lost on his thoughts. Tomorrow he will set foot on Gusu again--Cloud Recesses to be exact. It was just a season that had past but the change was evident. Jiang Cheng does not know what else to think.
If he's being honest, he's a bit nervous but not anxious. He don't feel like fainting at the thought of meeting Wei Wuxian accidentally. He still intended to stay clear. But, he also know there's a chance to bump into him. Especially, he learned that Wei Wuxian had volunteered to take part in teaching.
He thought of the sword strapped behind him together with his own sword. Since his ambidexterity had improved over the course of almost four months, he decided to bring along Suibian. He never thought of shoving it back to Wei Wuxian. Perhaps, just a reminder to him that he's moving on. That, now, he's better than the years that had passed.
Flying on Sandu, and Suibian strapped across his back, everyone on Jin Sect stared openly at Sandu Shengshou the other day. His simple presence in the grand hall --still with the two swords on his back-- made people talk.
And talk they did.
When Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling, along with other Jin and Jiang disciples, landed outside the gate to Cloud Recesses, the first thing that everyone stared at was the sword behind Sandu Shengshou.
The rumors were true then.
It's what the thought that crossed several disciples' mind. Because it was not only the Jins and Jiangs were present, some Lan disciples and other prominent sects were also present. Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi stepped forward to greet Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng just stood aside. He roamed his eyes around and found there's no presence of Elder Lan or the Sect Leader.
Senior disciples of the Lan ushered everyone inside. Jin Ling immediately break-off from the group. Jiang Cheng let them be. He left a few reminders to his Sect's disciples before dismissing them.
He walked for a while, there's a certain, calmness inside Jiang Cheng that he never felt before. He didn't feel rage or anxiety. He was tense that's true, yet not enough that he will throw a fit and embarrass himself.
He asked a Lan disciple where Elder Lan is, and it was pointed out to him that he was in his shi. So Jiang Cheng walked along a path, where he glanced at the old tree he remembered. He smirked before continuing to walk. He made his steps known, but he didn't anticipate that there will be other people inside because it was so quiet.
He just knocked on the door until Lan-shifu asked him to come in.
"Lan-shifu, I came as soon--" he greeted with a smile, which immediately froze when he saw the people inside.
It wasn't only Lan-shifu. There sat around a small table were the Sect Leader Zewu-jun, his brother Hanguang-jun, and Wei Wuxian.
He froze, his brain short-circuited. Since when did the Sect Leader Lan came out of his seclusion? They're here! All of them were gathered, did he stepped in at the wrong time?!
"Ah-- Lan-shifu, Zewu-jun, Hanguang-jun..." he swallowed, "... Wei-gongzi, I apologize for interrupting. Lan-shifu, I'll just come back later." He quickly saluted and left the place.
"Wanyin-sheng."
Jiang Cheng turned around, Lan Qiren stood just outside his opened door. "Sheng, let's have dinner together later. Go back to Yunmeng tomorrow. I'll have the disciples prepare a guest chamber for you."
"Of course, I'll make sure my nephew settles in first. See you later Lan-shifu." He saluted again and walked away.
When Jiang Cheng reached the old tree, he sagged against it.
He wasn't ready! That was so unexpected! But you did good Jiang Cheng! That's... that's good already Jiang Cheng.
He gave himself a small pat on the back. He really didn't expect to be presented with a surprise like that. He didn't even have enough time to register their expressions. They must have been shocked and confused. Just how will he face them again?
His heart pounded as the shock still run through his body especially seeing the Lan Sect Leader out of seclusion. He never heard of this. Or maybe there have been no announcement yet. He breathe out. Before going back to looking for his nephew.
When nightfall came, Jiang Cheng traversed the same path going to Lan-shifu's chamber. He never caught a glimpse of Wei Wuxian the rest of the afternoon. For this, Jiang Cheng is relieved. He might not survive if the man suddenly approached him.
Lan Qiren was already waiting for him, his door was open to let the breeze in and to let him know to just enter. There were already dishes laid out in a table before him. Jiang Cheng then, greeted and sat down across Lan Qiren.
The dinner wasn't uncommon between them as they have shared several while Lan Qiren was staying in Lotus Pier. Speaking of, Jiang Cheng never asked Lan-shifu why he stayed that long in Yunmeng. Doesn't matter anymore, Lan-shifu can stay in Lotus Pier as long as he wants.
The dinner was quiet and ended uneventful too. But on both parties, it's not only their stomachs that was filled but also their hearts. It's nice to know there's someone as close to a family, who Jiang Cheng can share meals with.
At the end of their dinner, Lan Qiren asked a question.
"Wanyin-sheng, are you going to give back Suibian to Wei Wuxian?"
Jiang Cheng immediately shook his head as his hand instinctively reached back to the sword behind him.
"I don't think so. Lan-shifu, I've already stake my claim to this sword as soon as it emitted that power." He kept quiet for a moment before he sighed. "In truth, I just want to keep something of him close to me. Is that wrong?"
"No, I don't think so. You are using his valued sword. To me, you're just a person who honors the memory of his brother and wishes to fight together with him again."
"Do you think, he will gain back his cultivation level?" He cannot help but wonder out loud.
This, Lan Qiren took his time before answering. "He will eventually strengthen his core. But it will not be as high as before. Maybe enough to get him out of situations. Especially, the core that was in his current body was not diligently cultivated when it was still young."
Jiang Cheng nodded, a solemn expression on his face.
"Rest assured that Wangji is looking after him. He's fine living here in Cloud Recesses. No need to worry about him."
"Who said I'm worried?" He snarled, but immediately regretted it. "I-I apologize shifu."
Lan Qiren just hummed but his expression told Jiang Cheng he isn't offended one bit.
"Aren't we all the same?" He asked. "We deny things that we really feel. We conceal what's inside our hearts, our minds, because we are afraid of so many things."
Jiang Cheng pursed his lips, he knows he's not being quite honest right now. But it also isn't easy to be upfront.
"Are you expecting for something to happen Wanyin?"
Lan-shifu's voice was, as usual, quiet and filled with patience whenever he asked Jiang Cheng something akin to self-reflection. Jiang Cheng thought about it.
He wasn't expecting anything. If Wei Wuxian came to him then, he will face him. He just... doesn't know how. He told this to the senior before him.
"Just be natural."
The next morning, Jiang Cheng woke up feeling tired. After he departed from Lan Qiren's shi last night, he encountered Sect Leader Lan and their conversation didn't end well. What he saw in Sect Leader Lan was both haunting--because he saw himself like that a few months back-- and uncharacteristic. Seclusion didn't do him any good. Is that why he came out of it? And is that also why they were in Lan-shifu's shi yesterday?
Jiang Cheng shook his head to clear his thoughts and finished tying his hair in a bun. He put on the straps, and placed the swords on his back. He stepped out of the guest chambers only to be welcomed with unexpected guest.
"Sect Leader Jiang, good morning."
Jiang Cheng frowned but greeted back anyway. "Sect Leader Lan, what brought you here this early in morning?"
"I would like to apologize to Sect Leader Jiang about last night." He lowered his eyes, a clear indication that he's feeling ashamed of what he did.
"It's nothing, I apologize too for stepping over the line and crowding in your space."
"That's fair." Sect Leader Lan nodded. They both walked to the dining area to have their breakfast. They were right on time and even Hanguang-jun and Wei Wuxian were already seated when Jiang Cheng entered. He tried to ignore that side, so he went straight to the table placed for him. He could feel many eyes on him, he's sure it's because of the two swords behind him. He ignored those.
His eyes found his nephew sitting with the Lan disciples and he nodded at them. Lan Qiren also nodded to him when their eyes met. Soon, the breakfast passed by uneventfully. Jiang Cheng stood up and went to his nephew's side when everyone was starting to get out of the hall.
"A-Ling."
"Jiu-jiu, you're leaving today?"
"Yes, what else will I be doing here?"
"I dunno, maybe, tea time with Master Lan." Jiang Cheng immediately rolled his eyes at his nephew's joke.
"I'm going back to Carp Tower to finish off what we left before going back to Lotus Pier. I'll be coming over a few times a month. Behave." Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes.
"Yes, jiu-jiu!" Jin Ling smiled and bowed to him, before he walked-off. Jiang Cheng continued his stroll aimlessly. He was hoping to see Lan Qiren and let him know his departure.
It wasn't until Jiang Cheng was walking towards the entrance gate did he come face to face with Wei Wuxian and his now, cultivation partner, Hanguang-jun. Jiang Cheng kept his face impassive.
"Jiang Cheng!" Wei Wuxian's cheery voice greeted him.
"Wei-gongzi, Hanguang-jun." Jiang Cheng greeted, saluting to the two people.
Hanguang-jun reciprocated but Wei Wuxian stood immobilized.
"W-what did you call me?"
"Wei-gongzi."
Wei Wuxian's gasp was both almost exaggerated and also filled with surprise.
If Jiang Cheng was being honest, it was a fight against himself. All his being was protesting to his brain on how he was acting. He was so calm, stoic, Jiang Cheng wanna slap himself silly because among all things he considered, being like this was not one of them.
"A-are you okay, Jiang Cheng?" Wei Wuxian took a step but Jiang Cheng's body becoming tense and being defensive. Immediately, Hanguang-jun stepped forward to hide his husband behind him.
Jiang Cheng took a deep breath and remind himself that, he's better now. He's doing much better now. He closed his eyes momentarily and took a deep breath. He clenched his shaky hands before releasing it. He opened his eyes and met Wei Wuxian's. "I'm fine. I'm leaving Cloud Recesses so you don't have to worry about me anymore."
He tried to side-step the couple but Wei Wuxian stopped his arm. Jiang Cheng stilled, he didn't retract his arm, nor did he look back to the person who hold him.
"Jiang Cheng, don't be like this." Wei Wuxian pleaded. "Why are you carrying Suibian with you?"
Wei Wuxian was having a hard time holding himself together. He missed his shidi so much. He wished it was easier times. He wished they could all get passed this and just go back to their easy bickering. Rather than be confronted with this stone cold Jiang Cheng.
"It's none of your business what I do with my swords. If I want to bring them anywhere I go, then it's mine to decide. You have no say in it." He said, voice rough with barely holding emotions.
"What a brave claim, Sect Leader Jiang."
This time, Jiang Cheng snatched his arm from Wei Wuxian and faced the newcomer.
"Zewu-jun..."
"Brother."
Both Wei Wuxian and Hanguang-jun saluted to the Sect Leader. Jiang Cheng quietly did the same.
"Are you leaving now, so soon?"
Jiang Cheng pasted smirk. "Between the two of us, I'm sure Sect Leader Lan knows. A Sect Leader cannot leave behind his duties for so long, just to satiate selfish wants."
He noticed the narrowing of eyes and a glare directed at him. Jiang Cheng chuckled, "Sect Leader Lan, didn't we just apologize to each other this morning? Why are you out for my throat again?"
"Who said that I am? I actually came to see you off. What kind of a host am I, if I can't even get over this, right Sect Leader Jiang?" his reply was snarky, which made the two present audience widen their eyes, and for the other to gape his mouth.
Jiang Cheng kept his smirk, but deep inside there's a rising red hot anger at the stupid petty comments of Sect Leader Lan.
"Also, I'm curious too about the swords behind you. Why are you keeping Suibian with you? I expected you to shove it back to Wei-gongzi."
This kind of Sect Leader, Lan Xichen was so different from he knew. What happened??
"Didn't you know? I wield two swords now, Zewu-jun." he paused, "Oh, right, I apologize again, Zewu-jun." he started to bow while saying, "You just came out of seclusion yesterday, I shouldn't have assumed you've known this kind of things already."
When he raised his head, Lan Xichen, one of the twin jades, was glowering. His face was dark and thunderous. But Jiang Cheng saw the familiar reflection of honey-brown eyes back at his.
"What are you all doing here?"
Lan Qiren's voice echoed and all four of them turned to greet him. Lan Qiren didn't hesitate walking towards Jiang Cheng until he reached him.
"Are these people giving you a hard time?"
"No, shifu, they are kind enough to send me off." He smiled.
Lan Wiren looked at the other three with his all-knowing eyes before turning back to Jiang Cheng.
"Alright, Wanyin-sheng. Like always, my shi is open for you. Send me a letter if you're planning to visit your nephew. Also, tell me more what happens to Lanling Jin Sect with the new administrative structure in place. I will send a letter to Sect Leader Nie after I've discussed matters with Lan Xichen."
Lan Qiren reached out a hand and gave him an encouraging pat. "You've done well, Wanyin-sheng. I'm always proud of you."
Jiang Cheng gave a grateful smile to his shifu, the one who gave him a shove to take a step forward. With just a short amount of time, Lan Qiren has made a good change within Jiang Cheng and he's liking it.
He saluted to all four people, who just watched him before flying off to Carp Tower.
He did good indeed. And he's also proud of what he'd become now.
