Work Text:
In a world where your partner is chosen by some higher power, you would think that it’s not going to be hard to find a lover or as people now call them - a soulmate. But it turned out it was not as simple as it looked like. When Yoongi was seven his parents told him the truth behind a soulmate bond.
“Do you see this phrase on my wrist, sweety?” asked his mom. “We call it a soulmate tattoo, these words belong to your soulmate and your words are tattooed on their body too just like that long poem on your father’s back. It means that our soulmates said these words to us and after that our bond was completed.”
Yoongi took a curious look at his mother’s tattoo and said: “So you and dad are soulmates?” His mother then smiled and put her warm hand on his cheek. “Who knows...these words, we will only hear them when we pass away. These are the last words we hear from our soulmates and then we die.”
Yoongi’s eyes grew bigger. “I don’t understand”, he whispered “and where is my tattoo then? no! I don’t want it!”
“Shh my child, don’t be scared, your tattoo will appear on your 18th birthday. Till then don’t worry too much about it.” His mother kissed him and wished good night, but little
Yoongi couldn’t sleep. He started thinking about soulmates and if he actually wanted one if it means he won’t know about him till his last moment. The thought alone scared him but he decided to listen to his mother and not worry about it for now.

That lasted for 11 years. And then on the day of his 18th birthday, Yoongi saw a short sentence appear on his ribs. “Don’t let go”

Now six years later Yoongi was rushing through the crowd with a huge bouquet of lilies sweating nervously in fear of being late. It’s their first year anniversary and he didn’t want to mess things up especially after their little fight a few days ago. It wasn’t something serious, just a usual banter that turned into an argument because both of them were so exhausted with work and they haven’t seen each other for almost a week, so yes they had a small fight, it didn’t last long but Yoongi still wanted to make things better.
However, being late to the restaurant on their anniversary wasn’t really helping. Two more blocks and he could see a place of his destination. Stopping in front of the entrance he took a short break, checked his looks and entered the door.
“I’m so sorry and happy first anniversary, love,” he said right from the start. Jungkook just smiled and shook his head.
“Just as I expected so I came only a few minutes ago, don’t worry. Thank you so much for these flowers, I didn’t know you remember that I love lilies.” And then he kissed Yoongi. It wasn’t a long and passionate kiss because they were in public but Yoongi didn’t mind. Jungkook tasted like caramel, it was too sweet for Yoongi’s own good but he couldn’t get enough of Jungkook’s lips. When they broke the kiss Yoongi took a close look at Jungkook and smiled sweetly. God, he loved him so much.
“Okay enough kisses, for now, let’s eat. You made us wait for so long, I already was hungry but now I feel like I could eat a whole bear!” Jungkook turned around and took his place.
“Wait you told me that you didn’t wait long!”
“Time is an illusion.”
“You know it’s not how it works right?” Yoongi chuckled and took a menu. “Okay order whatever you want Jungkook-ah since I’m paying.”
“Oh what a gentleman you are. I’m a lucky man.” joked Jungkook.
No, thought Yoongi, it’s me. I’m the lucky one.

Probably Yoongi should explain something. Talk about the elephant in the room - a soulmate bond. Yes, his tattoo is still with him, but he rarely looks at it. And yes Jungkook also has a tattoo. It’s behind his ear and it says “Never”. Just one word. The next question is, are they soulmates? No one really knows but...but Yoongi is sure that they are and he has some serious reasons for thinking so. First of all their tattoos match pretty well if you ask him. “Don’t let go” and “Never”. Maybe he should be worried about the context, the meaning behind these phrases but it’s not urgent. His second reason is pretty simple - they fit perfectly. Yoongi dated other people before Jungkook but it was never for too long, half of the year maximum. He never felt so calm and natural with his previous partners. It was easy to date Jungkook and that was the first big difference. The more time they spent with each other the more similarities they found, it wasn’t just favorite food and movies, it was something deeper, it’s like they understood each other without words even when they were just friends. So yes Yoongi is pretty sure that Jungkook is his soulmate. But what is more important - Jungkook thought the same. They were perfect for each other and Yoongi didn’t need to wait for his last day on Earth to realize it.

“Do I need to?” whined Jungkook.
“Yes baby, if you want to make Jimin happy.”
It was a busy day, the wedding of their two best friends - Namjoon and Jimin. Since the early morning, Jungkook has been running around the house, checking out all preparations and getting more nervous with every passing minute. Now he was whining about a piano performance he promised Jimin. Yoongi was teaching Jungkook to play piano for a few months and Jimin made Jungkook promise him that he will perform something at his wedding. Needless to say that now Jungkook regretted his decision.
“I’m too nervous, what if I mess up in front of everyone? I’m gonna die from humiliation.”
Yoongi tried his best not to smile, Jungkook looked adorable with the pouty mouth.
“Your gonna be great, trust me, after all, you had the best teacher in the world!”
Jungkook teasingly rolled his eyes.
“Oh please don’t flatter yourself. You couldn’t even scold me when I made mistakes!”
Yoongi didn’t have anything to say to that. Blame him but it was impossible to get mad at Jungkook for messing up the notes when he looked at you with those big Bambi eyes. But still, he was confident in Jungkook, his boyfriend was a natural in piano.
“Jimin heard you play before and he loved it, so you have nothing to worry about. Now finish getting ready, we have to go in 10 minutes, I already texted Jimin that we are on our way.” With that Yoongi kissed him on the lips and went to the kitchen to take their wedding present.
After 10 minutes both of them were already in the car, ready for a ride. The wedding took place out of the city so it would take a while to get there but they had enough time.
Jungkook turned on the radio and relaxed on his sit. The Scientist by Coldplay started playing.
“Oh I love this song!” he said and started singing along. Jungkook had a nice voice, very soft and delicate, Yoongi loved listening to him sing.
The road was almost empty of any cars, so Yoongi allowed himself to speed up even though they weren’t in a rush. The wind was playing with their hair through the open windows and Yoongi relaxed enjoying the moment. The song ended and something unfamiliar started to play but he didn’t mind. Suddenly Jungkook put his hand on Yoongi’s knee and it brought Yoongi back to reality.
“I could spend my whole life just riding across the country with you,” said Jungkook with a dreamy smile on his face. Yoongi smiled in return. It’s a nice feeling, to have someone you love reciprocate these feelings. Yoongi was sure someday they are going to ride to their own wedding just like that.
“I love you more than anything,” he said.
Jungkook obviously did not expect it because he started laughing, his ringing voice filled in the whole car and Yoongi couldn’t help but laugh too.
“And I love you even more than more than anything,” said Jungkook with happy tears in his eyes.
“This sentence makes no sense.”
“It does to me.”
“Okay if you say so.”
There were no cars while they were riding through the bridge so Yoongi smiled and allowed himself to take a close look at Jungkook. The young man was looking back at him with adoration in his eyes. 'This is it', thought Yoongi, 'this is my soul-'
The thought suddenly cut short as he felt a heavy pressure on his head and chest. The car started spinning like crazy, everything turned into a blur of crushed windows and sky. ‘JUNGKOOK’ screamed a voice inside Yoongi’s head. ‘Jungkook, jungkook, jungkook. What is going on?? Where is Jungkook? Is he alright?? I need to make sure that he is fine.’
Then the spinning had stopped. And everything went silent.
Yoongi’s heart was beating so fast he thought it could break right through his chest at any moment. He took a deep breath and looked at Jungkook. The boy was unconscious and fear run through Yoongi’s body. ‘No! No no no please no! It can’t be happening! Be alright please be alright!’
“Jungkook!” he screamed, his throat hurt. Yoongi took off his seatbelt and stretched out a hand to Jungkook, but the moment he did so the car started swaying. ‘What the fuck’ Yoongi though. But then he heard the noise coming from Jungkook, suddenly he opened his eyes and started spinning.
“What? Yoongi! Are you alright?” he said and the car started swaying even more. “Don’t move! I think we are dangling from the bridge because some car crashed into us.” Yoongi’s head was pounding but he couldn’t let himself faint when Jungkook was right beside him. He needed to save them.
“A phone! Jungkook-ah where is your phone? We need to call the police or Jimin.” With terrified eyes, Jungkook took a look around the car.
“It’s on the flood,” he whispered. “I- I don’t know if I can reach it without shaking the car, what if...” his voice started trembling “what if we fall”. Yoongi saw the tears in Jungkook’s eyes and there was nothing more in this world than the need to wipe these tears away and assure Jungkook that everything will be alright. But the truth is, Yoongi was also terrified. ‘I can’t show it. I have to be strong for him.’
“Just don’t make any sharp moves, you can do it, just stay calm” Yoongi tried to stop his voice from shaking, Jungkook needed him.
“Okay”.
Jungkook closed his eyes for a moment and then started slowly lowering his body, trying to reach out to the phone with his left hand. He was almost there when the car unexpectedly started moving somewhere. At that moment Yoongi realized that it’s falling. The car was falling and they couldn’t get out.
“Yoongi” he heard Jungkook’s shaking voice. He was crying. ‘That’s it? It can’t be. It’s not fair’.
“Everything will be alright” he tried to say with calmness but instead he felt as hot tears started running down his cheeks. He reached out for Jungkook and intertwined their hands. “Don’t let go” whispered Jungkook. “Never” immediately answered Yoongi.
‘Oh, I knew it’ was his last thought as they fell into the abyss, hand in hand, heart in heart.
