Chapter 1: Me llamo Park Jimin

Chapter Text

It was becoming increasingly hard to focus in class. Jimin had started off their 8 week course with flying colours, working hard, doing all the homework, even the optional parts. He wanted to show his absolute commitment to mastering this language in order to impress his teacher with his efforts if not with his natural ability. The teacher was definitely who he was doing all this to impress, not that particular handsome classmate, if that’s what you’re thinking.
Jimin didn’t care in the slightest about impressing that guy. Even if he did, a tiny little bit, it didn’t matter. His fellow language learner was not to be won over. Not by Jimin’s enthusiasm, or his dedication to extra homework tasks, not even by what he thought to be his winning smile, deployed at regular intervals.
He had seemed even less impressed with his efforts to be mysterious. Surely most people would have had their interest peaked by a guy who seemed to have more going on under the surface?
Beautiful, infuriating Taehyung was obviously not looking for an enthusiastic man of mystery. And yet he was so mysterious to Jimin. He was the same age as Jimin, he knew that much, but yet he seemed to bring an air of child-like fun to the class, dressing in cheerful colours and regaling the class with his weird stories which on the surface entertained but upon closer reflection revealed a bit of a dark theme. He was just so different to Jimin in so many ways.

The incident in the café couldn’t have illustrated that fact more clearly. There was a local sandwich shop that Jimin had been going to most days to get some lunch after their morning class was over. The owners were friendly and patient with his limited Spanish, and it was ideally located as he passed by on his way from the language school to the bus stop.
He was getting more confident day by day and had been feeling pretty smug at how quickly the staff had understood his order when Taehyung had entered. Sitting up in his chair and adjusting his hair into its most alluring formation, Jimin readied himself for an impromptu lunch date which would inevitably lead to the two of them becoming close friends, studying together, having lunch together everyday….
Ten minutes later Jimin’s sandwich had been eaten but the puzzle of Kim Taehyung was yet to be solved, and in fact appeared to be getting more complex.
Surely being mistaken for a couple is not the worst thing in the world? Two young attractive foreign professionals in an eating establishment at the same time… it was not an unreasonable assumption for the staff to make. Yes, technically they weren’t actually there together but they did know each other and had arrived at the sandwich shop from the same place.
But the mere suggestion that they were anything more than classmates appeared to provoke nothing short of pure rage in Taehyung, if his expression was anything to go by. Jimin, seeing himself as an easy-going and charming customer, was poised to make a light-hearted comment that he was certain would not only clear up the misunderstanding but have them all chuckling. However he was prevented from the opportunity to put everyone at ease by Taehyung’s sudden exit. The man could not get out of there fast enough.
Before Jimin had the chance to find out if Taehyung was any more susceptible to his charms outside of class, or attempt to unravel any more of the mystery of his unusually compelling classmate...Taehyung bolted.
