Sixth times the charm

Summary:

" Screw the perfect spot for the perfect moment, this could be their perfect moment. "

5 times Daisuke and Haru go on failed hangouts and one successful date.

Notes:

To Lachi,

I know you asked for only one date but I wasn't so sure if I could simply write only one. So I may have given you 6 well more like 5 and a half of Harudai being idiots in love. I did make sure that the prompts you requested are here too like pinning , not knowing the other likes them park and them spending days, well multiple days with each other. I hope you enjoy this

From, a hopeless (at being) romantic

Work Text:

It was after a long shift and all they wanted to do was sleep. Haru didn’t even have the energy and just gave in for Kambe to order delivery food. The rest of the time was them eating and just watching tv until they fell asleep.

If you asked anyone to describe Daisuke and Haru’s relationship they would say that the two were an “odd couple”. The two were constantly at each other’s throat but would pull a punch at anyone who hurts their partner. Even though their daily routines fit perfectly with each other , Kambe would pick up Katou and sometimes Haru has some extra time to make some extra food for Daisuke. The team never knew if they were enemies or lovers, as fun as it was to watch them fight like a married couple it sometimes became annoying. Everyone knew their feelings so it won’t come as a surprise if the two decide to date.

What comes as a surprise is that they haven’t started dating by now. Even Suzue and Saeki had started dating and they met up in a shorter amount of time. For a pair that was with each other almost 24/7 they only stayed as buddies and nothing more.

So they tried to convince Daisuke to take the first step. Compared to Kato he seemed to be easier to influence compared to the stubborn senior.

It was one regular evening the young scion was waiting in front of the vending machine to grab some coffee for him and his partner. From the corner of his eyes he could see Saeki approach him with a smile on her face.

“Good evening Dai-chan” She greets with her cheery tone.

“Evening Saeki-san” the two were already good friends so it was normal to go by first names at this point.

“How are things with Haru lately?” She asks as the other places the second order on the machine.

“We’ve had more missions lately but besides that I think we are fine” He answers by taking the cans.

“Hmm what about you two go out and relax a bit” she suggests looking at the selection on the machine.

“There isn’t a real need to go out”  Kambe shrugs and decides to wait for her.

“Why not? It’s normal to hangout with your best buddies.” Saeki joked and grabbed her drink.

After she got their drink they returned to the office still making small talk. Although he doesn’t give much thought to what she said he still thinks about it. It would be something for them to take time off work and go out to have fun. Like what Saeki said isn’t this something normal buddies do?

They entered the office and gave his partner his can of coffee. This was probably his second cup and it hasn’t even been 3 pm. Mostly due to them staying up the night before for some adollium dealer then needing to go back to the office for some paperwork.

“Thank you” Haru gave Daisuke a smile before continuing again. Katou definitely needs a break soon but it’s far from possible with his attitude. Knowing his partner though the man wouldn’t let it happen that easily.

Haru started drinking his coffee looking at the screen, the reflection of the screen seen through his eyes as he had been staring at it for hours. Obviously focused but also meant that he forgot most of the things around him like the small unnecessary noises from Kamei’s computer or the scrunches of the food wrappings.

Daisuke returned to his seat and continued his work. The day just continued with them finishing their work. It wasn’t really hard considering he had HUESC to help him the rest of the day go the same way: they finish up, Kambe drives Haru home and he goes back to his place.

The only main difference is his new goal for the next day. Tomorrow was one of their few days off so they could be free to go anywhere. Unless he had some plan with the neighbors or the other workers but Daisuke would have known about it by now. They basically know each other like the back of their hand and eyes closed.

So he could plan what they could do tomorrow and surprise Haru. Seems like a great plan but he’s unsure which route to go with. A classy restaurant would seem like a safe option, he often finds them within books and even once in Haru’s detective show and he didn’t seem to have a problem.

--Date 1: the fancy restaurant--

This was the start of many of their so called “hangouts” or ya know ? Oblivious Dates

It was around 6:30pm the next day, Daisuke had texted Haru to wear some fancy clothes as he planned to pick him up around the hour. Katou reluctantly agrees to it seeing how his partner seemed a bit too persistent for this. He couldn’t simply say no

Haru was fixing his tie when the doorbell rang. Already knowing it was the rich scion he grabbed his coat and opened the door. There he found Daisuke in his usual fancy suit with just a bit more elegance if that was even possible.

“Want to tell me what’s with the sudden plan?” Haru was still confused by all this.

“I just thought we could spend our night off together,” Daisuke answered, reaching his hand out then.

“Now let’s go shall we?” He acts uncharacteristically characteristically gentleman-like. Haru laughs a bit but grabs his coat, they’ve had moments like this and Haru knows how persistent the younger one is especially at treating others.

They went to the expensive vehicle, it seemed like Daisuke got a new one just for the occasion. This was just probably another one of his attempts of showing off his riches. Haru looked at Daisuke and he was wearing a new suit too. Was it weird he knew which one was new when he never cared about his own clothes? Haru’s thoughts get cut off as the car speeds up the dark road.

They drove around the rich district filled with flashing lights and hotels. The roads were fully lit, a complete opposite from Haru’s place.

“How much is he planning on spending?” Haru thought to himself looking around the area then back at his partner.

The golden lights compliment his partner had he always been that pretty? Well he is one of the most eligible bachelors of the country no doubt about his looks still Haru always takes these small moments to look at the other’s features. If he didn’t hate the guy when they first met he would have said that Daisuke was obviously his type on a physical level. Dark hair , and those silver blue eyes that he could get lost quicker than falling off the bridge.

He gives a small smile before looking forward again, it seems like they’re parking now he prepares to leave. They leave the car to see a grand entrance but despite that there are barely any people around.

“Don’t tell me you rented out the whole place?” Haru asked annoyed that the scion would throw his money around for something as simple as dinner.

Daisuke looks around to check if they’re actually in the right place.

“I can assure you inspector I didn’t do that” He answers assuming it’s just a slow night despite it typically being full every other night.

He fixes his coat and heads to the receptionist to claim their table.

“Reservation for Kambe Daisuke” He inquired but the Lady didn’t even check the list.

“My apologies Mr. Kambe but our kitchen had a small fire so we won’t be taking any further orders for the night” She said

Daisuke furrowed his eyebrows and sighed

“Do you wish to reschedule instead?” She suggested trying not to lose customers

He looked back at her and sighed “Do I have any other choice?”

“I’m afraid not sir” She answers and looks into the schedule. After they had chosen another time to reschedule the dinner Kambe went back to his partner.

Haru was fixing his tie then saw Daisuke approach him again. Visibly annoyed but doesn’t say anything to ruin the already ruined occasion.

“So...what did they say?” Haru asked cautiously knowing a bad answer is coming

“They won’t be taking any other orders for the night” He crosses his arms before requesting HUESC directions to another restaurant.

“HUH?” He looks at Kambe who’s waiting for HUESC to finish

“The kitchen had caught on fire before we got here” He mentions and gives a small tsk when HUESC says all the other restaurants are fully booked for the night.

“Did anyone get hurt? How bad was the fire?” The caring inspector started asking questions but Kambe didn’t have the time to know the answers to those.

After answering the questions the best he could they went back to the car. Upon sitting down they heard a stomach, they looked at each other in union before laughing. Guess they were both waiting to eat dinner with each other.

“How about the other restaurants?” Haru asked

Daisuke shrugged “booked for the evening, I can ask to overlap someone-” He gets cut off

“No they don’t deserve that” Haru spoke up and Daisuke looked at him.

He really wants everything fair and square even if he himself is hungry too. Classic Katou everything must be done without anyone getting the short end of the stick except for himself.

They ended up going to some cheap but sufficient fast food chain. Aside them looking out of place with the two were hungry to even care about the stare of others. Haru ordered a burger and Daisuke ordered some pasta but aside that Haru ended up pointing at the casing with the toy meals and ordered one too. Claiming that his niece has been looking for it around but it was never available at their place.

Daisuke got the tray and they went to their seats, it was quiet … well as quiet as a fast food chain could be. Before they could start eating Haru lets out the laugh he’s been holding ever since they left the restaurant. Daisuke confused by this sudden burst of emotions, looks at the inspector if he was crazy.

Between his laughs Haru said

“You sure you weren’t the main chef?” He continued laughing as Daisuke looked at him with a pout.

Kambe took the burger and took a bite out of it.

“HEY!” Haru grabs it back and eats it “get your own” he grumpily

“Why did you put so much effort into tonight's dinner anyways?” Just like any other case he’s trying to solve he starts to ask.

Daisuke shrugged and took a bite out of his food “I just wanted to hang out with you”

Which wasn’t a lie but putting this much effort into something as simple as dinner. Haru was always an exception when it came to Daisuke. It was almost always Haru , he allows himself to be vulnerable with Haru , he allows only Haru to touch him and most importantly it’s only Haru that

Made his heart feel things after the incident

Kambe looked up at him again , yea their situation is pretty funny two grown men in a mcdonalds in fancy suits enjoying commoner food.

He laughed a bit

“What’s funny now?” Haru asked now

“Oh nothing” Kambe answered, taking another bite of his food.

Haru takes the younger’s wrist and makes Daisuke feed him his pasta as payback from a while ago. Kambe couldn’t help but stare at his golden eyes just looking at him with that small sparkle of happiness. He removes his hand from Haru’s grip before going back to eating

At the end of the day they agreed that having breaks like these aren’t so bad, heck they should have more moments like this.

--Date 2: the amusement park--

And with another chance because of a free weekend it was the perfect time to hangout with your buddy….right?

Haru stood by the entrance waiting for Daisuke to come and as usual the guy came later than expected. Fashionably late might I add, wearing a black turtleneck and overcoat he looked a bit out of place but it was fashionable nonetheless.

Daisuke looked at his watch before speaking.

“Sorry Suzue had requested me to wear something...fitting” Daisuke spoke

“Uh… yea it’s fine” Haru stayed almost speechless this whole thing reminded him of a date

It was the weekend so the place was somewhat packed with people of all ages. Adults, teens and children could be seen in the amusement park. There were rides and even some gift shops that held merch for the place, it was colorful, much more colorful than the business meetings and offices they had been accustomed to.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve been here” He said letting himself say how nostalgic this all feels.

“The last time I think I went to one was…” Daisuke stopped to think , probably some trip in middle school he guessed.

“well … since you’ve been here less. What do you want to do first?” He asked

Daisuke, unsure of where everything is just shrugged and asked if they could just tour around just a bit.

They go around the area a bit sometimes finding a mascot or two. Even some friend groups wearing matching headbands and also some people holding the stuff they had bought from the gift shops.

Along the way whenever they spot a ride that they like they would just drag the other and vice versa. It was a mix of falls and cute ones but they tried their best to ride anything available at the time.

Haru always checked to his side to see if his partner was still with him. For the most part he’d always find Daisuke beside him on missions or not. It almost felt weird not seeing him beside him and especially now when Haru turned to his side to find the millionaire missing.

He retraces some steps but that also left him some time for himself.

To Haru, Daisuke was someone who trusted him when he didn’t himself. He’d always have faith that Haru would be there no matter how dangerous it would be. I mean the guy could have gone with some highly skilled agent to accompany him in the adollium tradings but decided to be paired with a simple but stubborn cop.

Aside from Haru being the reason why the information was released, Daisuke never once blamed the inspector. He would always assure Katou that he’s the reason why the biggest burden has been lifted off his shoulder. Forever thanking him even if he doesn’t show it from dropping him off the bridge multiple times and yet there are times he’d bring Haru his favorite meal or drink when overwhelmed with work. Or stay with him to watch his favorite shows even if they had seen it a million times.

He sees the millionaire back at the game area,it looks like he had been looking at the prize and a specific stuffed animal caught his eye.

Haru sighed in relief and approached Kambe.

“I thought I lost you in the crowd” Haru voiced out

“I may have gotten distracted” Daisuke keeping his eyes away from the plush

“Eh… it’s fine” He sighed and looked at the teddy bear.

“You wanna win one?” He asked, giving his cute cheeky smile.

Daisuke pauses for a moment but shakes his head no but Haru spoke up again

“C’mon there’s no pain in trying” Haru declared before pulling out his wallet to pay.

“It’s an obvious scam Katou there’s no winning this” Kambe explained crossing his arms but not stopping the brunette.

“Oh hush we’re here to have fun plus I used to win these a lot as a kid” As Haru grabs the small bag of sand he aims and

… misses.

Daisuke let’s out a small laugh at the attempt before Haru grabs one and gives it to him.

“You try it then” Daisuke gives it a small toss and smirks before throwing it into the cans and yet he misses by a lot.

The smirk on his face turns into a small pout as he looks back at the inspector as if he was proving his point. But although it may look it doesn’t even look threatening, it’s like a kitten really cute…. Wait was that normal to think about your friends? Especially your partner from work. Haru sees Daisuke hold his hand up to his ear but Haru holds his hand.

“There’s no fun if you’re gonna win it like that” ah there Haru goes again with all fair and just.

Daisuke puts down his hand and mutters “it’s not like I want to win it in the first place”

“The look on your face says differently,” Haru mentally told himself.

Daisuke gives in another round this time there’s less effort so of course it still misses. This time not by much , how is shooting a rocket launcher or defusing a bomb easier than this. He sighs seeing it miss

“You’re doing it wrong” Haru commented and tried to aim and throw, the ex ace of the first division missed it by a bit.

“Oh? I don’t think it worked , how was the right way?” Daisuke teased only hearing Haru growl and get the 2nd to the second to the last bag. Daisuke grabs the last one , this should probably be their last one or they might be here for the whole day just for a stupid stuffed animal.

They both threw it at the same time the first one failed but thanks to that the other one managed to make the whole tower fall.

“YOSHAAA” They cheered Haru’s being a bit louder than his companion.

The owner of the game asked which prize they wanted, Haru pointed at the big teddy bear he saw Daisuke eyeing when he got here. It was almost half his size with brown soft fur and two buttons for his eyes. Haru hugged it before giving it to Daisuke.

“This is for you” He says as he hands it to him, it covers the obvious blush on Daisuke’s face for a moment.

“I didn’t say I wanted it…” He said but not giving it back to Haru

“But you kept eyeing it a while ago. Plus we won it together”

Daisuke gives it one last hug and sighs in content “Thank you... Haru”

Just Daisuke saying his first name almost made his heart burst. Haru Haru Haru , Yes they were close but they don’t often go by first name plus the situation feels like something out of those romantic dramas his sister loved to watch.

After Haru had calmed down from his heart racing they decided to choose the next thing they could do. As they were thinking a wave of screams passed through them, looking up to see the rollercoaster that scared them.

“We’re going there” They said in union then looking at each other in shock then laughed. Leaving the stuff toy in one of the lockers they went to the giant roller coaster.

It wasn’t that big but it looks like a lot of twists and turns and even where you’d be upside down for a moment or two. Just the sight of it makes you lose breakfast but to them it seems almost like nothing. They’ve been in more gratifying situations than a stupid rollercoaster, they could easily handle this.

Not even 10 minutes in you could hear Haru’s screams from the ride and see Daisuke’s grip on the seatbelt unsure if they’re gonna fall or not. After minutes of minutes of twists and turns they finally went back safely to the start. Daisuke’s typically slicked back hair is a mess and Haru is out of breath after all that screaming.

Before they could leave the ride a kid then starts coughing and before they could even leave the kid vomited on Daisuke’s shirt. He stiffens up by the vomit hitting his shirt both and audible gasps could be heard around by the bystanders. The situation was embarrassing especially for Daisuke who dawns a shocked but frozen expression not knowing what to do.

The mother and child kept apologizing and even said they’d pay for his laundy but Daisuke just said it wasn’t needed. He could easily ask one of his servants to do so at home anyways , that still doesn’t leave the fact that he has puke on his clothes. So they decided to get new ones, well whatever the park had to offer that is.

Daisuke pushed the cloth of the dressing room to reveal him wearing one of the park’s merch. He sighed looking at himself in the mirror, he ended up getting the coral pink variation. He looked around the store ready to pay what he had just bought to see Haru in the cute accessories area. He finishes paying and then heads to his partner.

He carries his stuff to the accessories area and looks at what Haru is looking at. It was tons of cute animal themed headbands and before Haru could even turn he felt something touch his head. It was a cute taupe colored wolf themed ears and he looked to see the smirking Kambe , proud of what he had done.

Haru couldn’t help but notice the pink color shirt Kambe had chosen, although he had worn it a couple of times it actually suits him more than it should. Haru gave back the teddy bear they had won a while ago and could see the small sparkles in his eyes whenever he hugs it.

It was the perfect moment, no one there to bother them or even see them considering how busy everyone else is. They are both calm and collected and could easily say what’s on their mind but before Haru could even open his mouth the place announces that they would be closing soon.

People start to crowd the exit of the place not wanting to be escorted out by the police or staff. Haru sighed another chance lost because he was too lost at the thought of Daisuke.

--Date 3: the ice rink--

Well third time the charm right? Haru looked at his phone trying to speed up to get to the meeting place. He had told Daisuke to meet him in the open rink that recently opened. No matter how long they have been together it was almost impossible to get the two to confess. They would either chicken out or speed the car trying to avoid the whole thing.

So he’s hoping the third times the charm actually works in this situation. It wasn’t that bright out and the winds were somewhat chilling without any air conditioner needed. Haru goes to their designated area to meet up and sees Daisuke holding two coffees, one for each of them.

“What took you so long?” Daisuke asked giving him one of the cups.

“I was trying to find my old skates” but ultimately failed at his search.

“You used to skate?” Daisuke questioned trying to get to know his partner more.

“I used to, before I got so busy with work and life” Haru answered, taking a sip of the warm cup of coffee.

“What about you?” He asked, maybe if he was inexperienced with this too Haru could help him with it. That was the main plan after all.

“Sadly I’ve only tried it once and I don’t even recall much about it” Daisuke looked at the skaters on the rink.

Perfect! All according to the plan , Haru thought before finishing his coffee and throwing it.

“No worries I can teach you” Haru offered all proudly.

They went to the counter to request some skates and after that they did the usual routine of grabbing it , wearing it , and then getting on the ice.

But once on the ice all of Haru’s plans failed he felt uneasy and could barely balance on the ice. While Daisuke had held onto the railings as a support. Of course he is stubborn; he doesn’t decide to hold onto the railings and just stands there on the ice a bit frightened to move and topple down.

“You’ve done this before Haru you can do it again!” He hyped himself up before almost falling back.

Trying to regain progress he sees Daisuke slowly letting go of the railings before skating up to him

“Alright there inspector?” Daisuke looked at the struggling inspector.

Haru groans and tries to hold Daisuke to have some sort of support before falling. But in Daiharu fashion Daisuke moves back a bit letting Haru fall onto the ice.

“Looks like you need to be the one thought” Daisuke let’s out his hand. Haru tries to hold it but Daisuke moves farther away from his reach.

Haru growls trying to get up again and once he does he leans on something more trustworthy , the wall.

“I thought you didn’t know!” Haru yelled but not loud enough for everyone to hear.

“I searched up tutorials before going here” Daisuke admitted

Haru holds onto the wall and tries to do what he saw Daisuke did a while ago but once he lets go he falls again.

“Son of a” He stops seeing a child near him and sighs.

“Maybe you just lack balance?” Daisuke brought up

Haru gets up again “for your information I have great balance” Holding onto the rail afraid he might fall for the 3rd time today.

Daisuke nodded then offered to help but this time was declined by the off chance that what Daisuke would be doing isn’t gonna help. He sighs and tries to skate around the rink leaving Haru by himself again.

Well then there goes his plans of teaching Daisuke or vice versa. Haru looks at his partner and goes around the rink with caution but after a few moments he speeds up a bit. Next thing he sees is Kambe with a prideful smirk going around the rink so carefree. Haru sighed trying to regain balance once again holding the handles and slowly pushing away.

“Maybe you just lack balance” Daisuke’s voice ran through Haru’s head he sighed trying to keep steady and when he finally did he fell back down again.

Haru groans before getting up again and Daisuke slowly skates toward him laughing a bit.

“This is actually pretty fun” The ravenette said with a small smile , not his classic smirk, a small soft smile that could leave Haru soft for days… or make him fall for the guy again.

Daisuke helps Haru up for real this time and teaches the older how to skate. Well as much knowledge the scion actually knew about this, he helped Haru stand up straight and held onto him allowing Haru to stay up for more than 5 minutes without the rails.

Haru kept his hands on Daisuke’s shoulders to stabilize himself as Kambe slowly started to move on ice. It was quiet too quiet , quiet enough for Haru to hear his heart pounding but not quiet enough to hear Kambe’s heart do the same. Daisuke looked up to him and pink tinted his cheeks but Haru just assumed that the younger was feeling cold.

Daisuke slowly moved away and Haru tried his best not to let go , after minutes of doing this it seems like he’s gotten the hang of it. He slowly let’s go and he manages to skate just a bit. Happy about this Haru tried to do a small spin only to fall in the middle of the rink.

Making Daisuke laugh yet again at his actions, well at least he’s laughing and the situation wasn’t bad as last time. He got up one last time.

“Let’s try that again” Haru insisted

Daisuke helped him again, this time they felt oddly close. Just centimeters away from a kiss but none of them would even try. Haru gives Daisuke a small look of determination before pushing his feet again. Daisuke slowly moved away only to lose balance and fall off. This time it’s Haru's turn to laugh but then he also starts to lose balance too. He tries his best to regain it and he did successfully.

He looked down at Daisuke and gave him his hand , signaling to hold it. Before Kambe does Haru pulls the exact same stunt done onto him.

Midway through Haru’s laughter rain starts to fall. It was light at first but quickly became strong along with the winds.

“When I finally get it!” Haru shouted as the rain got heavier before they could leave the rink. Daisuke skated towards the edge and so did Haru, unlucky for him though he fell due to the added wetness on the ice.

Everyone was escorted out of the rink after that and the two were drenched in rain.

--Date 4: The “peaceful” drive--

It wasn’t really planned, they just didn’t have any plans so they decided to drive to see the view of a certain area before the next work week began . Haru had mentioned how much he missed the view from the provincial side so Daisuke suggested they could visit a less urban place nearby.

Daisuke waited outside his car twirling his keys waiting for his partner to finally go down. When he finally sees him it looks like Haru had been preparing for this moment, carrying a medium sized bag that’s probably filled with some snacks. He gave Daisuke his signature smile that almost made the scion drop his keys.

“Ready to go?” Daisuke asked as he opened the door.

Haru placed the bag in the back of the driver and entered through the opened door. The car was just like the one Kambe had bought when they first met, it was the blue and open one perfect for today’s occasion as Suzue had suggested.

“Did you put sunscreen before heading here?” Haru asked him

“I don’t think it was necessary Katou,” Daisuke answered and he saw Haru get something from his bag.

He brings out a bottle of sunscreen and let’s Daisuke use it, after all they would be under direct sunlight so it’s best to keep safe. Kambe declined at first until Haru argued that the younger was being too stubborn and kept it on Daisuke himself. It started from soft touches on the cheek and forehead making Daisuke cutely scrunch his face a bit but he could feel his cheeks heat it. Probably an allergic reaction to the sunscreen he reasoned to himself opening his eyes once again to see Katou close to him.

Why didn’t he stop him? His skin care had spf already but he still allowed this or pushed him away. He could have gotten in driven away but those soft touches felt so nice.

Unlike the last hangout they had this time the sky was bright but the sun was covered with some clouds. Daisuke wore his glasses to make sure the sun wouldn’t blind him during the drive, if only he had something to blind him from his partner’s beauty too.

The drive went smoothly, there weren’t many people driving in the area and they slowly went further away from the more urban districts. There were still some cars and motorcycles but most it wasn’t like the busy streets they see on the day to day basis.

Kambe looked to his side and was at awe. It’s common knowledge Daisuke isn’t the best driver especially when he’s distracted by his partner’s hair moving through the winds and enjoying these smaller moments of their lives. Haru seemed almost carefree not thinking about the stress the workload is going to bring him the next day.

Haru closes his eyes for a moment and lets the sunlight touch his face as the winds flew past them. It definitely caught Daisuke in a daze as he couldn’t stop staring to look back at the road. Well how could he? The sun is literally highlighting Haru’s features to perfection.

Daisuke was never really truly one with aesthetics but he came to understand the more times he spent with his partner. The perfect taupe hair that just seems fluffy to the touch, that perfect smile he dawns after helping everyone, god even his body was amazing. Broad shoulders that he never realized until he saw his partner place a box over them carrying it. The things as simple as a harness could highlight because of how fit it was on him and finally...his eyes.

The perfect brown eyes, or was it amber? Maybe gold perhaps. It was those perfect eyes that looked at him with tender, care, fear and something he never could describe. It was a mix but he couldn’t tell what it was. Daisuke gripped the steering wheel tighter; it seemed like a mystery the Millionaire Detective couldn’t simply solve.

Just then those eyes that he had been thinking about finally showed as Haru opened his eyes. But then it widen a bit, widen with fear and then

“KAAAMMMBEEE” Daisuke cuts his train of thought before they could even crash the car and turn the car back to the right route.

“What’s gotten you distracted! You could have killed us” Haru screamed , those eyes really do scream fear.

Daisuke shrugged and continued on driving. It was a bit too close, this time making sure the AI was there for some assistance when it happens again.

When they finally felt comfortable again Daisuke sped up a bit more, they had left the city a few miles ago judging by the change of scenery.

As if the first time wasn’t a good enough warning Daisuke looked at Haru once they were on a steady drive. These feelings are going to be the end of him that’s for sure. He looked back at the road ahead and sped up trying to distract himself.

Around 20 minutes later the car started beeping, signaling that it’s running out of gas. With no gas station near by the car slowly came to a halt.

“Huh what happened?” Haru looked at his partner who’s trying to contact HUESC.

“Looks like we ran out of gas before heading to the location” Kambe answered.

“A tow truck will be approaching you soon, Balance: Unlimited” Haru groaned after what the AI said.

He looked to the side. It seemed like they wouldn't reach the area by sunset as the sun slowly started to set. There goes the perfect area for a confession and none of them would voice that out. He grabbed the bag from the back seat and opened it.

“What did you exactly bring?” Kambe asked

“Well.. I was originally going to use it to see better on the spot” Katou pulls out his binoculars.

“Why do we need those we have HUESC?” he looked confused gesturing to his glasses.

“You can use yours, I’d be using mine” Haru answers and leaves the car to see the view.

It wasn’t the greatest sight but the buildings looked like blocks of color on a painting that we call the city. Mixes of browns, reds, greens and so much more other colors that would give the city it’s life. The sun slowly started to set and the city was slowly filled with lights, it’s like the stars of the skies but reachable.

Daisuke followed after had left. The sun slowly settled, turning the once blue sky into a perfect golden yellow. Daisuke looked at Haru and the thoughts from earlier came back rushing in.

He looked peaceful again, Daisuke loved seeing him at peace but he also loved seeing him annoyed as contradicting as it sounds. It makes him happy knowing he can make Haru feel these emotions. It gives him hope that he could feel what Daisuke had been feeling for a while now.

Haru looked at Daisuke and then told him stories of how when he was a kid he loved watching the world from above even just for a bit. It made everything small that for a moment problems could feel so small and he could just relax without being overwhelmed. He tells him how he would do this especially before his matches along with some friends, it had been their own little ritual.

After a while they ended up sharing their childhood memories and like how Haru had mentioned, everything else felt small in the moment. The only thing that felt constant was them and their ever growing feelings for each other.

Screw the perfect spot for the perfect moment, this could be their perfect moment.

Before any of them could confess though light shines from behind them. The tow truck has finally arrived to pick them and the car up.

--Date 5: The apartment--

They had finally finished another heavy case and the pair couldn’t be anymore tired after that. Haru had invited Daisuke to his home again, now their home now in Kambe’s mind. He had visited multiple times that even the

neighbors think that he lives there too.

Kambe helped in bringing the grocery home but not much in actually cooking. Granted he had been getting better at cooking but just to make sure Katou’s apartment doesn’t burn down in the next few hours Kambe was only allowed to help in food prep.

Daisuke looked at Haru’s side to see what he planned on cooking. It seemed like it was just the usual curry. Kinda reminds him of the first time he visited here. It was the same meal but this time he didn’t need to run away from home to end up with Haru for the day.

Haru placed the spices on the dish making sure it is up to perfection. Doing this recipe multiple times though allows him to just eyeball the measurements to their preferred taste. After a while Daisuke left him to change into some pajamas. It was kinda their routine by now and everything is where it’s always meant to be. Example the cups placed in the cabinet or the pink hoodie Daisuke wears whenever he’s around always stay in one consistent place.

It’s peaceful that some things stay consistent but sometimes change would just make the days feel so much better. Unexpected changes like when the day they first met was risky but it was probably the best thing that happened for them. So maybe change wasn’t so bad?

Haru stopped to taste the dishes, finding Daisuke behind him in his clothes. But what if change would be what stops all of this. All those hangouts that just seem to fail, those moments where they could be close and what if they don’t see each other after all of this.

Haru gulped a bit thinking if it’s even worth it to take the leap. Daisuke on the other hand was just trying his best to cope with all of this. Thus dinner felt awkward saying their thanks and eating silently without looking at each other. Unlike the other times they have done this the tension felt thick.

The silence suddenly stopped with the sound of beer cans opening while the detective show started running. Katou tries to lessen his intake just incase he would say something stupid but Kambe tried to drink as much just to disappear.

Haru notices Daisuke’s heighten intake of alcohol

“Oi don’t drink too much your such a lightweight” Katou scolded only to be replied by the sound of the beer hitting the table.

“What’s wrong now? You don’t drink this much” Ah yes, that deep care always lingering in his thoughts.

Daisuke looked up to the tv never once staring into Katou’s eyes in fear he’d never look away. He continued to drink the alcohol

Love was such an evil sickness sometimes, speaking of which…. He looks at the calendar. It’s the 13 now huh, time had flown past them so quickly and yet none of them knew the feelings they had for each other.

Haru on the other hand had his mind racing, he couldn’t even watch the shows properly without thinking about Daisuke. How bad he looks but at the same time he’s still perfect. The drowsy eyes of his partner starts to close and he whispers something under his breath. The only thing half sobered Haru understood was

“wish he’d like me”

“Who’s he?” Katou asked, making Daisuke jump a bit realizing he was heard.

“He’s just someone I really like” Daisuke finally admitted but then corrected himself “in fact sometimes I think I love him” he didn’t know if he was dreaming or reality because he’d hoped by now he’d be asleep.

Kambe liked someone? The idiot thought and almost felt his world break apart.

“Then why don’t you tell him” He feels his grip tighten a bit on the can.

“We never got the time to yet” Daisuke eyed the drink

Kambe just hoped this was all a dream by now because he’s afraid his partner might leave him after this.

“I like you, Haru” He said softly, closing his eyes once again only to be awakened by the scream of his partner.

“HAAA YOU LIKE ME?!?” Haru yelled probably his next door neighbors could hear. But Daisuke realized his so-called mistake.

He had just confessed to Haru… blush ran across his face and stood straight up again. Haru could see the fear and regret in his eyes but then Haru calmed down.

“You don’t need to say it back to me,” he said in a soft voice.

“Of course I do! I love you too!” Haru screamed somewhat calmed down from before but still managed to startle Daisuke.

Both of their faces were hot and red from the explosions of feelings within themselves. Haru is first to get up leaving Daisuke in the living room alone. He grabbed the alcohol in front of him and chugged it down as fast as he could hoping this is all a dream at the end.

All his tiredness and stress finally took a toll on him as he slowly laid his head uncomfortably on the table.

Haru had returned holding two glasses of water for them just to find his partner asleep. He sighed and drank some water a bit, with his mind sobering up. He kept the glasses down and attempted to carry his partner to bed.

Unlike all of their previous hangouts this seemed...successful? He looked at the sleeping face for a while and felt the biggest burden fall off his shoulders. He didn’t know whether to feel grateful , happy , embarrassed or… his thoughts get cut off by a small tug on his sleeve.

He looked down on his sleeve to see that Daisuke had been doing that with eyes slowly opening again and a soft but tired voice he said.

“That wasn’t a dream?”

Haru looked at him surprised and confused then his face softened and kissed the knuckle of the hand that tugged him.

“Does this feel like a dream?” Haru asked Daisuke giving a nod

He laughs a bit and Daisuke answered “feels like the best dream of my life” which made Haru blush

Slowly falling back to sleep Haru was left with the messy room and a clear consciousness. He picks out the cans throwing it in the garbage and finally taking a night shower before going to bed. His heart was still beating fast but for the best reason.

He loves me

He loves me

He loves me

Was what he felt his heart was saying,

finally putting some clothes he goes back to the room. Daisuke was tossing and turning, probably a nightmare or maybe a headache after taking so much alcohol for a short period of time. He goes to him and slowly shakes him.

Kambe looks at him but closes his eyes because of the pain in his head. Haru got some painkillers and handed him some water too.

“Remind me never to drink that much” He mentions before finishing the cup. Haru laughs at him

“Who even told you to drink too much?” He asks knowing damn well he wasn’t the one who kept him up to this.

Daisuke groans and lays back down

“Did you mean what you said?” Haru asked just for reassurance one last time.

“I love you. Haru ” He said with conviction and a somewhat sober mind.

Haru just smiled hearing this.

Finally deciding it was time for him to go to bed he slowly moved to the closet but Daisuke said that he could stay in bed...if he wants to at least. Haru ended up taking the offer this time the closeness they were once afraid of has slowly become comforting.

--Date 6: The picnic park--

It was currently February 14 also known as valentines day.

Daisuke started waking up due to the sunshine peeking out of the curtains. It felt hot, but comforting he could hear a heartbeat he knew wasn’t his but knew who exactly it was.

He looks up to see the sunlight like a spotlight on his partner’s face. His face then reddens a bit realizing the position that they’re in. Haru had his arms around him and Daisuke was the same, it was pieces falling perfectly into place feeling just right.

He calms down by the sound of Haru’s heartbeat but then hears a small groan from the older. Haru slowly wakes up too after a small yawn, he said.

“Morning Daisuke” Why did his name just sound perfect coming from him?

“Morning Haru” he feel Haru’s grip tighten a bit

It felt too early to even get out of bed and just being together felt comforting.

But they had to get up sometime right?

They decided not to let the holiday go to waste as cliche as it sounded they decided to have a date together.

It started with cooking where Daisuke would help as Haru instructed, sure it would be dangerous but the man was learning. They ended up making different types of food and even some drinks to go along later. Since Daisuke didn’t have any other clothes at Haru’s place he ended up going back to his own. While still being home he made sure that the gas would be full and ready for them to use. On the other hand Haru was checking the weather today just in case it would rain later. Once Kambe came back to Haru’s place they ended up choosing to go to a park for a picnic, during the ride Daisuke never left his eyes from the road but when he does Haru always tells him to look back.

It was a simple picnic date that they could both just relax and talk. No one was there to bother them, not their coworkers or even relatives over the phone. Sure they would tease and get annoyed by each other but then they would also tell each other what they loved about the other.

They ended up in a more private area thanks to a certain millionaire’s money and Haru for once doesn’t mind it. They looked at the foods prepared mostly consisting of semi burnt sandwiches and some drinks such as strawberry milk and juices. Mostly because Daisuke wants to lessen his alcohol intake to lessen the headache he had. Haru didn’t mind, he loved strawberry milk anyways. It seemed like Daisuke did too with every kiss they shared.

And well they official call it a date, after six attempts
