Orange Juice

Summary:

Apple x Orange
Emotional 😭😭🍊🍎💦💦💦

Work Text:

Apple-kun wakes up to the touch of a human hand, frightened at first, but excited that he might finally be leaving this hellhole. He's tossed into a plastic bag along with a few other apples, and thrown harshly into a cart.

After what seemed like days of the cart getting fuller, they finally stopped, and he could hear the beep of the checkout. The cart wiggles a little and he bumps into something squishy, "Hello?" he calls out, trying to figure out what it was.

A meek "Sorry" was all he got in return. It smelled... citrusy. He doesn't have time to think before being lifted out of the cart and put into another, with different foods and a carton of milk. But the smell still lingered.

The drive back to wherever this human lived was bumpy, and often foods would fall atop eachother. He assumed most grocery trips were like this, and was happy he'd only have to go through it once. He also assumed the strange noises he heard in the strawberry container were just playful.

After tumbling around in the trunk for a good long while, the car is finally put into park, and they're once again on foot. One of the bags rips at the top of the stairs to the human's apartment, and something that looks an awful lot like milk pours out onto the concrete. Along with the strawberries, that is. Too bad their life ended so quickly, only a few will be salvaged.

The human, who's apparently named Sarah, sets the rest of the grocery bags on the counter and goes back outside to clean up the mess. This gives the food the time to socialize, discussing how they think they'll be cooked, and whether or not they'll go rotten.

Apple-kun rolls out of the bag, taking a look around the kitchen. It looked nice, clean. Hopefully he'd be a good snack, since generally apples weren't made into meals. A familiar smell arises, the citrus! He eagerly turns to find where it was coming from, and finds himself outside the bag of oranges.

He doesn't have time to make conversation, because by then Sarah's come back into the kitchen and starts to put the groceries away. He's placed into a hanging fruit basket, along with a few bananas, a pear, his other apples and the oranges. He hears the voice from before and calls out, "Hello? Orange?"

He wiggles his way over towards the oranges, getting another small response, just like before. "Huh? Oh- I'm sorry, I bumped into you earlier, right?" The orange says, apologizing. "Oh! Don't worry about it haha, that cart was definitely at fault" he gives him a reassuring smile.

Orange-kun laughs lightly, "You're too kind," his voice echoes through his mind. It was so soothing, and he smelled nice. He introduced Apple to his friends, and Apple did the same. They got along well, and spent many nights just talking.

Some nights they would talk about how they missed the foods that had been taken from beside them. The memories they had together, the things they'd seen at the store. They even spoke of how beautiful their orchards were, back when they were young.

They grew close, and stayed that way until the day Apple-kun was the last of his own. And he knew he'd have to say goodbye. He tells Orange-kun how much he's cherished their time together, and how much he's meant to him throughout their lifetime here. When the hand comes down, he braces himself to be picked up.

But rather than feeling it pick him up, he feels a jostle, and looks up to see Orange-kun in the humans grasp. "No!" He shouts, rolling out of the basket and onto the floor. He wasn't supposed to get picked up- it wasn't his time! Most oranges get old and moldy in the back- live to become fertilizer!

He's picked up now, in the human's other hand. He's placed on a cutting board next to Orange-kun, and he gives Orange the happiest smile he can muster. Trying to comfort him in his last seconds. He watches painfully as his lover's skin is torn from his body, and thrown into the trash. He watches as he's picked apart, and laid onto a plate. The last thing Orange says is I love you, and he knows it's true. All that's left is the orange juice on the cutting board.

Apple closes his tear-filled eyes, a smile on his face as he's cut into slices, and laid onto the plate right next to Orange. 'We make a fine snack,' he thinks, letting it all go.

The End.

I hope you cried.
