The Pain of Loving You

Summary:

The day Levi’s world came crashing down was the same day you looked him in the eye and said,

"𝙄'𝙢 𝙎𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪?"

This is not a love story, it’s a story about love, pain and sorrow.

Work Text:

This is not a love story, but a story of love, pain and sorrow.

You were cold. The chill had already settled in your bones as shivers violently shook through your body.

"We're almost there, c'mon hold out a little longer," you heard Jean say as you slumped forward against him on your horse, your eyes began to grow heavy. In the short time it took to reach the abandoned factory you had fallen asleep and only awoke when you felt pain shoot through the wound on your side.

Jean had said something to you but his words had not registered in your mind. Your brain screamed at you to just give up and rest, in a selfish way it made you envious of Erwin. Even the thought of the commander brought on a different kind of pain. He was the most determined person you knew and was like an older brother to you. You knew that if this was the way you felt when you thought about him, you could only imagine what 𝙝𝙚 would feel.

As you thought of him your heart swelled, nearly the only constant that was left in your life was him. He was your rock, the one person who could truly understand you; the only person you could ever truly love. Your heart belonged to him and him alone but he could never know this. You knew it was wrong he was your superior, your captain and your best friend but you couldn't just stop. Your heart ached for him, you just wanted to hold him even if it was just for one night, but he could never know. It would ruin everything, the years of friendship and trust you had built would be gone and that would cause a pain like no other. The thought of him gave you the strength to stay conscious, you had to see him at least once more but you were weak and your body needed rest.

With your eyes closed and heart heavy you could hear shouts of orders from around you. All the voices blended together, all but one. This one stuck out, stuck to your ear drums and embedded itself deep in your mind and heart. He was definitely closer to you than anyone else in the room and sure enough when you opened your eyes, albeit with blurred vision, them familiar cloudy grey eyes stared down at you with a look you'd never seen in his eyes before, desperation.

"I need you to stay alive, please," his voice was raw and barely above a whisper, but to you his voice was the loudest in the room. You could feel the strength you had gained begin to slip away again and felt the pull to the dark, but before you lost all your strength you managed to grab his hand.

"𝙇𝙚𝙫𝙞." And with that you had drifted into unconsciousness.

It had been two weeks since the incident and two weeks since you had been last conscious. To say the team was shaken up was an understatement. The captain had never been like this before, even after he lost Erwin he had stayed strong for everyone. However, when it came to you, he didn't leave your side for over three days, it was only when someone reminded him that he should shower that he seemed to want to leave your side. That alone was the first tell tale sign to everyone else that you were no ordinary soldier to him.

Even after your body began to restore itself he had stubbornly said he would not move until you regained your consciousness, however he began to eat more regularly after that. This was his first sign that you were no longer just a soldier to him.

He had witnessed many deaths in his time, some people he barely knew, to people who were like family to him. But when he thought about you, you didn't fit in either category. Yes, he knew you on a personal level enough so that he wouldn't reprimand you if you didn't address him by his title and that he knew about your childhood and you knew about his. It wasn't like how he thought of Erwin, someone who means a lot to him and he would've done anything for, no you were more special than that. On top of all of that he would lay down his life just to know you could live out yours and that thought was the one that shocked him to reality.

You had waltzed into his life full of energy and joy when he was dull and irritated constantly but no matter how much he would push you away you would come straight back. As time went on, he found himself less eager to fight you. You had made an impact on him and reminded him what it meant to be human but unbeknownst to either of you at the time, you had also situated yourself deep in his heart. When Erwin rescued him from the underground he had promised himself he would never fall in love as it would be a distraction and cause more pain than necessary, but as he sat by you now he knew he would throw every ideal he ever had away just to be with you.

This is not a perfect love story. When you had awoken you were disoriented and it took your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the bright light that had poured through the large window. The first thing you noticed was steel grey eyes peering at you intensely, the second thing was the hand that was warm resting upon your own. As you looked back at the man with the stormy eyes your heart ached for a reason you might never understand again. You might never find out the reason the man began to weep in front of you as you asked him a simple question.

"𝙄'𝙢 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪?"

This is not a love story; it's a story of love, pain and sorrow. One that is known as Levi Ackerman's life.
