Wish you were sober

Summary:

Tsukishima slowly watches as yamaguchi gets drunk on a houseparty and can't stop thinking about finally leaving.

Basically just the idea of the song "Wish you were sober" by Connan Gray.

Notes:

So basically I was emotional and almost
cried thinking about Connan Grays "Wish you were sober" while thinking about tsukkiyama and then had the urge to write a song fic!

Have fun reading and maybe finding the the lyrics of the song somewhere in the text!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

An empty cup was set on the table.

It didn't take long to be refilled.

Tsukishima sat on the couch, watching as his close friend for years happily chatted away with a stranger and slowly got more tipsy which each red cup of beer the downed.
Laughing and giggeling, trading drinks with this random girl neither he or tsukishima recognized.

It was cramped and incredibly loud, full of people enjoying their time.
Absolutely everyone looked like they enjoyed their time on this stupid collage house party.

Except said blonde boy who's only reason he didn't already crawl out of the window and fleed the party was this freckled boy standing a few meters away from him, like all the others, enjoying his time.
Maybe a little bit too much.

Tsukishima knew his best friend inside out.
Knew his knees were probably week though he talked like he was 6 years older then his actual age.

Ripped jeans draped over his legs and ear piercings dangling from his ears, making him appear so much rougher then he actually was.

Tsukishima found himself staring at the big clock above the living room entrance in which a pair of young drunken teens made out.

All he wanted was to get somewhere the music wasn't too loud.
All he wanted was for yamaguchi, his freckled friend to follow him out because tsukishima didn't like anyone that was present.

He was to stuck up in his inner monologe, complaining about the evening that he had already missed two girls trying to flirt with him.

His eyes were practically glued to yamaguchis back when he wasnt staring at the clock.
Occasionally he would also look into the faces of the people talking to his younger friend.

Before, he had already spend an hour leaning against the wall in the corner of the room but after being grinded on by 3 different people, all at least 2 - 3 years younger then him, he deemed it appropriate to sit down.

He dragged yamaguchi with him but he didnt really stay seated for a long time.
Only until the next time he had to refill his bright red party cup.

And tsukishima had internally cursed him for that. "please don't drink more beer."
he had muttered but it never reached the shorter ones ears due to the bass bouncing through both of their bodies.

It was utterly frustrating watching his childhood friend, once incredible shy and scared of people drown one after the other of those big red cups full of beer and various other liquids tsukishima didn't have a desire in ever trying.

After seeing what it did to his friend everytime, he hated to admit it but it scared him not being able to compose himself and possibly even worse, not watching over his friend in that state.

So he avoided it whenever someone tried to hand him a cup, sometimes, when the faceless person would be really obnoxious he would accept just to shove it into someone else's hand or abandon it on a random counter top.

Half of an hour went by like this until yamaguchis current flirt recognized someone in the crowd and disappeared in it, leaving the freckles boy and his half empty drink alone.

This was the first time that evening yamaguchis eyes darted through the room, scanning it for his older and terribly moody friend.
Tsukishima though, was actually glad he finally had the younger boys attention again.

He was so used to it, because it was always just the two of them that he always felt a disgusting feeling of jealousy creep up his stomach when he was left alone by yamaguchi.

Said boy shuffled over, tipsy as hell already and threw himself onto the couch right next to the blonde, spilling a bit of his beer fron the cup and making a fitting noise recognizing it.
"you're pretty tipsy, wanna leave?"
Because it was so loud tsukishima had to lean into his friend who leaned back into him in response. It was probably the alcohol.

"not yet, why are you always so impatient."
Yamaguchi slurred at his words. Tsukishima took a deep breath.
"i just wanna get out of here and you have had enough alcohol for today, come on." he answered sternly attempting to pull away and drag the other one up from the couch.

His plans were crushed when yamaguchi drowned the remaining beer and threw the cup away, swinging both his arms around tsukishima to keep him in place.
"I don wanna go yet."

Saying that there was silence would be plain wrong when the music felt like it was physically hammering into tsukishimas head but none of the boys said anything.

"I'm getting a headache, please. I need to step outside, at least." he practically begged.
A short hum followed and a poor attempt on rapidly standing up.
Gladly tsukishima held yamaguchi by his wrist, preventing him from falling either back into the cushions or on the floor.

He checked the couch just in case anything important fell out of his pocket and then dragged his childhood friend through the crowd until they reached the door which was wide open, currently welcoming new guests into the house.

Finally standing outside the fresh night air hit them both and tsukishimas lips escaped a heavy sigh. Letting go of his friend he fished his phone out of the pocket of his jacket to check any messages.

Yamaguchi stood lingering next to him and steadily closed the distance until he clinged to the blondes right arm leaning his head on tsukishimas shoulder.

The taller boy was quick to pocket his phone and shift his attention to yamaguchi who simply stood and gazed at the night sky.

'Was he sober enough to talk about the stars?' tsukishima thought to himself looking up too. They had a shared interest for stars and regularly went out on star gazing dates.
Just as friends of course.

It was funny because whenever yamaguchi was drunk it felt like a glimpse of what tsukishima could actually have.
When yamaguchi was drunk it was easy for him to confess feelings to his older friend and they got asked if they were a couple on numerous occasions.

Tsukishima had just never brought up the courage to reply with a Simple "yes." yet.
Because all the feelings that were so obviously there were left in those nights.
Not a single sentence confirming them has ever made its way through, into the daylight and soberness.

"m cold." yamaguchi stated blantly after a while.

"i wanna go back in." he added after a few beats of actual silence, much needed by tsukishima.
"I'm not gonna go back in there Tadashi i have a headache."

"i dont care about your stupid headache, its not even midnight yet"

"when have you last looked at the time huh?"

"show me then, don't know where my phone went."

For a second the taller boy contemplated on lying to his friend, forcing some kind of common sense on him again but in the end he just sighed and told the truth.

"i have it, i was afraid you might lose it."

"oh..."

Laughter from inside the house.

A light breeze.

"its half past midnight Tadashi, let's go home."

Yamaguchi didn't stop protesting until the house was out of sight.
The stumbled alongside tsukishima who already slowed down his tempo for his drunken mess of a friend.
Yamaguchi nearly tripped three times but tsukishima held him everytime.

He dosent even know how lucky he is to have me, the blonde thought the fourth time the freckled boy tripped over nothing.

"tsukki?"

"mmh?"

"stars are beautiful."

"yeah, but eyes on the way now."

A street cat crossed their way and hurriedly ran out of sight as she spotted the two.

"tsukki?"

"mmh?"

"i love you."

"i know..."

A late night bus drove past them, it was almost completely empty.
A lantern flickered.

"tsukki?"

"mmh?"

"aren't you gonna say something?"

"you tell me everytime you're drunk."

"really?"

"yeah."

"and what do you say everytime?"

Tsukishimas tounge darted out to wet his lips, if he had both hands available, he would probably fumble with them right now.

"that i know."

"no, what'd you say the first time!"

Only their footsteps could be heared for a moment until yamaguchi stopped on his tracks, making tsukishima - who held him by his wrist- stop too.

"what'd you say?"

"i dont know anymore."

"you're lying!"

Yamaguchi was right, dispite being drunk he still knew his friend inside out too.

"come on, it's not far until we are at your place."

"m not gon move until you tell me"

Tsukishima rolled his eyes, his headache was killing him and yamaguchi did obviously not know what it meant to be considerate.
At least not in that state.

"I'm gonna tell you at your doorstep alright?"

"you're not gonna stay over?"

"i- let's get moving okay?"

Yamaguchi looked sad.
Not dissapointed or Frustrated, just the epitome of sad.
The highest and purest feelings of a drunken person showing in his facial features.
He then started to slowly move in tsukishimas direction, suggesting they could resume their walk.

A good 15 minutes later they stood in front of the brightly lit entrance of the apartmrnt complex yamaguchi lived in.

Tsukishima knew his friend wouldn't just forget about what he wanted to hear, maybe tomorrow after he slept away the alcohol, but not today when his stubbornness was at its peak.

Wanting to speak up, his childhood friend interrupted him.
"changed my mind, i dont care what you said. Just don't turn me down now."

Before the blonde boy could even ask Yamaguchi leaned forward crashing his lips onto the ones of his best friends sloppyly, startling both of then.
He then flung his arms around the taller males neck, making it impossible for him to back away.

Tsukishima tasted alcohol and Yamaguchi tasted traces of the starwverry flavored bubblegum his older friend was chewing when they arrived at the party.

He probably had another two of them over the night, not wanting to try anything displayed by the host. Yamaguchi was uncoordinated, due to this drunkenness and tsukishima was uncoordinated due to the fact that that was his first kiss.

Akwardly and painfully slow they found a good rhythm. Anytime the blonde wanted to back out, even just to catch a breath or adjust his glasses yamaguchi would pull him back in.

Even IF he had wanted to keep this short and sweet, yamaguchi didn't allow it.
They stayed like that until tsukishima was lightheaded because of the lack of oxygen he got.

Both breathing hard, yamaguchi still held onto tsukishimas shirt.

"spend the night?"

he asked, blinking up to him with glassy big eyes. Tsukishima chuckled.

"Real sweet, but I wish you were sober."
