Work Text:

It had begun with Skeppy wanting to show Techno a new mod he had found. One that made you travel between the end, the nether and the overworld without having to wait for the portal to transport you. They could just walk freely between the spaces.
Techno had agreed to join his demigod friend in exploring this, it could be fun. And for most of the day it had been fun. The two of them were alone on the server, and by being alone it gave them freedom to just be playfully. More so than when they made recordings of their games to the masses. Skeppy had promised Techno that today it would just be them and the mod.

It had looked funny for them both, to just see into the nether at first. The heat from the other dimension seeping through the open space the portal had made, and Skeppy had pushed Techno inside the moment he was close enough to the portal.
Techno braced himself to feel the disorienting swirls of dimension travel, but when none came, he opened his eyes.
He could see Skeppy laughing at his tense posture from the other side of the portal. The overworld just as clear inside the dark obsidian. It was more like a doorway than a portal.
Spearing only a moment to let out a confused ‘’heh?’’ before beginning to wander around the obsidian frames, beyond was just a normal nether Techno could see soul sand and lava where the forest had stood in the overworld. Skeppy had joined him in wandering around the portal, both bantering quickly at the oddness. They had continued into the nether after Techno had pushed Skeppy into a shallow lava pool in revenge for Skeppy pushing him earlier. He did not die, but he did chase Techno in mock annoyance resulting in a sudden game of tag in the heat dimension.

The game came to a slow end as they found a bastion, joking about speed running instead of playing any more. Techno quickly mined some gold before Skeppy used his powers over the world to just give them gold to trade with the piglings. After that, their day had turned into a sudden game of fake speed running. Anything they might need and did not get immediately Skeppy would just get from the void to give to Techno, and in return Techno threw the gold blocks back as the diamond hybrid. Saying he should just start up a reverse trade system. Skeppy gives Techno diamond armor and Techno could give gold in return, a homage to own ancestors around them.

Their little game was going great until they got to the portal to the end dimension. Unlike the ones they had made this far between the overworld and the nether they could not see what was waiting for them in the end dimension. No endermen, no endstone and no dragon in sight, just the usual imitation of the stars.
Techno had taken only a second to comment on it before skeppy pushed him inn.
Techno let it happen, believing with utmost faith that Skeppy was soon behind him. The disorienting feeling from the portal left just as quickly as it had arrived. And Techno opened his eyes to a small ledge just by the end island. A normal portal behind him.
He commented to Skeppy that it was odd how the portal was different, what was this mod anyway? But Skeppy didn’t answer him.
Techno tried again on his communicator, only to meet silence. At first, he had thought it was a joke. But as the quiet went on the felt the pang of anxiety that something had gone wrong somehow.

Techno knew from experience that the demigod liked to play games with him, but not without warning, and not like this.
Taking quick note of his inventory, he had all he needed to fight the dragon by himself and some golden apples to spare. But he had not prepared himself to do it alone, and the sudden shift in both his plans and atmosphere made him feel the dread he was so used to crawl up his neck. Something was wrong. Shaking himself quickly, Techno could not allow the feeling to settle, not now and not here. He sent one more message to Skeppy just in case it was a fluke.
But there came no answer still.

Techno was alone in this now. and the only options he had left were either to wait some more or to fight the dragon and go back to the overworld. While Techno could be patient and wait, he felt that the better option would be to move and fight. This had to be a bug and defeating the dragon might help buy at least granting him access to the overworld and resources again.
The fight was longer than Techno would have liked, his mind not in it and the dragon got him to use more of his gappels than he would have liked. But he did get inn the final hit and the starry portal sowed itself to him. Techno hesitated for a moment; this would bring him back, right? What if it did not?

Skeppy had said that all the portals in this world would be see trough, but the only thing Techno saw was the night sky. Trying once more to contact his friend over the communicator and only receiving nothing. Techno gather himself up and jumped into the portal.
The darkness and drag of space travel washing over him.
The fresh air of the overworld hit him first, the half-broken sound of his name second, and the body of skeppy body slamming them both into the ground third. It took Techno a moment to get his bearings to even begin hearing what Skeppy was yelling about. And if Techno felt relief that his friend was hugging him, while apologizing loudly for a mod-bug, that was only for him to know. The quiet from the end had bothered him. And if he had held into Skeppy for a moment longer, then it was only for them to know.
After that Skeppy had promised him not to push him through any more portals in moded worlds like this.

Notes:
