Work Text:
Thor and Loki were arguing on the Statesman.
Thor: "Loki, can't you put your mischief away? We need you to be a leader."
Loki: "No, we need you to be a leader. Someone has to lift their morale. Look at them, Thor. They've all lost someone. Some have lost everyone. You and me are lucky. We still have each other. See them in the cargo hold? We're a strong people, this work should be easy for them. But heavy hearts sap their strength." Loki knows this on a personal level, though he doesn't mention their previous fights.
Thor: "I know they're in pain. So am I. But I try to lead by example. I try to give them hope." They leave the cargo hold and enter a large room where children are trying to bed down.
Loki: "You continue to preach hope, Thor. They need that. But they also need to feel hope." The children whimper, or cry, or shift restlessly. Loki's heart goes out to them. He casts an illusion over the ceiling. As the children look up at it, they calm down and stop crying.
Thor: "The sky over Asgard? Why would you show them that and remind them what happened?"
Loki: "They know what happened to Asgard. They watched it happen right along with the rest of us. But this... it's something familiar, something soothing. Like stories of a loved one, to help us remember the good times. Look, it already helps them." Some of the children start to fall asleep.
Thor: "Stories to help us remember the good times," he echos as they turn and walk away. "Is that why you only tell good stories of father?"
Loki: He instinctively shudders when Thor refers to Odin as his father. "They didn't know the side of him I did. You didn't even know that side. Why should I break the delusion now? It helps them." And if he was honest with himself, he'd have to admit it helps him, too. Helps him every time he remembers a moment when Odin was a good father to him.
They see two women squabbling, the stress and grief getting the best of them. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I must put my words into action." He transforms into a Sakaarian flappy-bat and goes to distract them. Thor watches with a subtle grin on his face.
