Rewind

Summary:

He got up and walked to the door, from the window he saw who was knocking. Hamura. Still bruised and bloody from their scuffle and the interrogation. What did he want now? Yagami wondered. He’d much rather take a looney case than dealing with whatever bullshit the captain was bringing him.

Work Text:

Just as he was about to fall asleep, Yagami heard a knock on the door of his office. He opened his eyes and rubbed them, he sat up on the couch, stretching. “We’re closed.” He said. He hoped it wouldn’t be a client. It was way past the hours he enjoyed working and he had an exhaustingly terrible day, no mood to deal with some crazy case the residents of this town seemed to show up at his doorstep with.

He got up and walked to the door, from the window he saw who was knocking. Hamura. Still bruised and bloody from their scuffle and the interrogation. What did he want now? Yagami wondered. He’d much rather take a looney case than dealing with whatever bullshit the captain was bringing him.

Yagami unlocked the door and turned the knob, opening it. From inside he observed Hamura, he was slouching forward with his eyes downcast and hands on his pockets, a defeated look. One so vulnerable that it was almost wrong to look at, if it was anyone other than Yagami looking at him like this, that is.

Yagami sighed. “What do you want now? We’re both tired, can you just… go away?” he said, clearly annoyed. He definitely wasn’t in the mood for this.

Without saying anything, Hamura launched himself forward. Yagami quickly braced for impact with the floor but instead… Hamura hugged him, he clung to Yagami like a lifeline, squeezing the air out of his lungs. Yagami froze, not expecting this, Hamura’s face was shoved on his neck, he could feel it getting damper. Hamura was crying. On his shoulder.

Yagami’s exhaustion prevented him from questioning it. He knew what was going through his mind, he knew why he was in pain. He wouldn’t question it. Yagami was anything but cold, despite Hamura clearly not deserving any comfort, Yagami was too soft to really deny a man some of it after they lost someone they loved. Especially when… Yagami was in the same spot, feeling the same pain. Grief had a weird way of connecting people.

The sympathy he felt for Hamura now was impossible to ignore but not like Yagami wanted to. Despite everything, Yagami never really hated Hamura. Just like he knew Hamura didn’t hate him either. Their relationship has always been this weird thing, unlike his other relationships, he never knew what to expect from Hamura, maybe that thrill is what drew him close to him as much as he tried to steer away from the man.

His line of thought was interrupted by Hamura finally letting him go, he leaned back and finally looked at Yagami in the eye. He was an absolute broken mess, face smeared with blood, sweat and tears. “Tak... “ He said. Lowering his hands down to Yagami’s own, grasping them. His hands felt cold, but calloused as always. The hands he was always used to. “Takayuki, can I stay for the night? Just… today.”

Yagami looked to the ground, shifting his gaze away from Hamura. This felt way too intimate, it’s been way too long since they were intimate like this. But he wouldn’t blame Hamura for this, not after all that’s transpired. He was probably desperate.

“I don’t think Kuroiwa will want to look for me here, I just… I just don’t wanna think about anything right now, especially where to hide. I’ll be gone in the morning.”

Yagami finally looked up to him again. It made sense for Hamura to hide in his office, of course. But he knew he wasn’t here for that, he wasn’t dumb. He’s a detective for god’s sake.

He sighed. “Ok. Get in.”

He knew it was a dumb move to trust Hamura right now but he went with his gut feeling, he knew he wouldn’t do anything when he was so fragilized right now.

Hamura entered the office and sat down on his couch. Yagami locked the door and looked at him, he was still all dirty and bruised. Least he could do for him was patch him up, so he scavenged around his office for anything first aid, his bruises weren’t that serious anyway but he’d much rather not have him stain the couch with blood.

After some time he finally found some gauze and antiseptic, he sat beside Hamura and started cleaning his face. Hamura didn’t protest, in fact he didn’t show any reactions to it. Maybe he expected this.

Yagami couldn’t contain his smile. “Kinda reminds of the old times huh?” Yagami said as he rubbed the blood off his face, Hamura lifted his gaze to him, his lips quirked up a bit too. “When you’d get all beat up in some random scuffle with a thug and you’d ask me to patch you up. And everytime I’d say no.”

“And everytime, you’d still do it.” Hamura turned his head to him.

Yagami smiled, pulling his hand away. “Guess I did huh, maybe that’s why you never asked anyone else.”

The atmosphere felt a bit lighter, Yagami had finished cleaning Hamura’s wounds. It was no professional help but it would do for tonight.

Yagami leaned back on the couch, looking out the window of his office. “Do you… want to talk about it?”

Hamura looked at him, his eyes gave him the answer. Never much of a man to open up, even on a moment like this. He was used to it though. Used to never needing many words with him, it was comfortable he wouldn’t lie.

He leaned back as well, they were really close. Knees touching, feeling any slight movement the other made. Yagami wouldn’t lie though… Maybe he also needed some company after tonight, now that he’s got it, he doesn’t exactly feel better but it’s definitely better to be in pain with someone than alone. He was sure his sleep would be filled with nightmares too, maybe this was some kind of miracle or irony, depending on how you want to see it.

Both men turned their heads to each other, both longed for something to feel the void they felt right now. Both felt lonely. Both were desperate.

It was only natural their lips would find themselves united.

Once Yagami opened his eyes, Hamura backed away slightly. His hand hovered by his cheek, scared to really touch his cheek. Yagami took it and led it to his cheek. The feeling was very familiar, way too familiar maybe. He thought he had forgotten about it after all this time.

“How long has it been since we kissed?” Yagami asked.

“Beats me.” Hamura said.

They could do more than just kiss tonight, if they really wanted to. It was always easy to forget things with physical touch but both of them were exhausted, physically and emotionally. Yagami laid his head on Hamura’s shoulder, he wrapped his arm around him pulling him closer.

Yagami didn’t know if he could ever forgive Hamura for everything he did but he didn’t have to. He knew the other wasn’t expecting forgiveness either, but he still came to his doorstep, chasing for his attention just like he did when they were younger and Yagami didn’t send him away. Maybe it was an old habit too hard to break away from.

They were not meant to be, still… It didn’t mean this didn’t feel genuine. Hamura’s presence here, involving him and comforting him. He felt like a teenager again, unable to say no to something that he knew wasn’t really good for him.

Someone that wasn’t good for him.

Was he not? Yagami didn’t know anymore. It’s been twenty years. Maybe it wasn’t a question if he was good or bad, because in the end he knew he could never say no. It was impossible to do it.

This night… This terrible night, all it did was pull them both closer, when the two of them thought they didn’t need whatever they had anymore.

It was obvious Hamura needed more than Yagami, it wasn’t a contest of who needed the other more though. Just the fact Yagami still yearned for him was a proof he had failed.

Hamura had chased Yagami’s hand with his own, intertwining their fingers. Both of them looked at it.

“The couch isn’t the most comfortable for two people to sleep in.” Yagami said.

“Don’t care.” He responded.

Yagami chuckled. “Was expecting something among the lines of ‘as long as i have you here with me’ or something. Didn’t know you lost the romance in you.”

He lightly chuckled as well. Yagami looked up to him, meeting his eyes. “As long as you’re here, I can sleep on rocks.” He raised an eyebrow. “There, happy now?”

Yagami shook his head and grinned. “Yeah.”

One moment of peace amidst the chaos.
