Chapter 1: telling the moon about you

Chapter Text

Inosuke groaned, throwing himself against the furthest tree he could find, as forcefully as he did everything.

He missed the good old days, when he didn't have to worry about Tanjiro sniffing him out, or Zenitsu catching onto every word he said.

When the wilderness was his, and his alone. As nice as it was to finally have a comfortable place to stay, Inosuke pressed his back against the grass, as he looked up at the night sky, just like he used to. No matter where he ended up, the stars and the moon were always there, waiting for him.

Not that he took comfort in it. Actually, he swore up and down that the only reason he bothered to look at them was because he couldn't wait to find a way to fight them, like he did everything else. He was pretty sure he'd be able to cut at least half of the stars down, if only he could reach them.

Still…

Sometimes, after sneaking away from the other demon slayers, he'd open his damn mouth to talk to the moon.

This particular night, he had something to come clean about.

"Alright, you asked for it!" Inosuke grumbled accusatorily, pointing at the moon. "That blonde I've been talkin' about… his name isn't Monitsu or Chuitsu, like I told ya! It's been Zenitsu this whole time."

Taking a moment to boast about the frivolous act of tricking the moon, Inosuke scratched his head. It still felt weird not wearing his mask all of the time, but…

"He was acting all weird again today. Tanjiro was talking to him about his eyes, 'nd I realized I didn't know what color Monitsu's were, so I leaned real close to see em, and he shoved me away," he rattled on. "At first, I thought he finally wanted to fight me, but when I looked up, his face was all bright red! And after a second, he let me look at his eyes again."

"The thing is…" Inosuke paused, rubbing his forehead for an answer. "Gah!"

He didn't want to have to say it. Not even to the moon. But his face had been red, too, after the exchange, and now he couldn't get Zenitsu's eyes out of his mind. Just like his hair, or his voice, and  everything else about him.
