Notes:

Work Text:

Loki was confused when he first saw you on the screen, his brow knitting as his stomach immediately churned.

For the first time in his life, he wanted to be wrong. Wrong about the reason why you were displayed on the screen, wrong about how his guts told him you suffered the same fate as his mother… Could it be that his destiny was that tragic?

“So, you know them. Who are they?”

The voice of Mobius interrupted his thoughts, shattering the cycle of anxiety that had started to spin in his mind.

“It’s none of your business, what do you want from me?

- Wow wow calm down buddy, I just want to understand what makes Loki be Loki! And they are the key to it all, right?” answered Mobius as he observed the god across him.

Oh how he was right, you were the key to his heart, his body and his mind. But he left you that day on Asgard, the day where he dropped toward an endless night, the day where he was supposed to die. He was still alive and you were mourning, fate was funny in that regard, it brought you together only to separate you when you needed each other the most.

“They are, they are special to me” finally spoke Loki after a pensive silence. His gaze was fixed on the ground, watching his hand, not daring to face you.

“Then why did you left her behind?”

That question hurt more than any torture they could have imagined for it was the same that plagued his minds during those sleepless nights.

He wanted to protect you, he really did. But more than anything, his pride had taken over him and now here he was, not even able to face your projected image without breaking down.

“I wanted them to be safe without me

- But you hurt them.

- I didn’t want to! If I could just fix this, believe me, I would.”

He got up, almost shouting and showing the slightest glimpse of the storm that was inside of him at your sight.

The agent in front of him waited for him to sit back down, carefully observing him as if he was mentally noting his every move, his every reaction that what was going on. When the variant or so they say was calm enough, he slowly leaned toward him while offering him his most friendly smile almost as if he tried to make himself appear as kinder than he was before.

“You want to know what happened to them?” he asked slowly, letting each word settle into the god’s mind, letting him slowly understand that you were his past more than his present. That he’ll probably never see you again.

“I’d rather not”

The words were short, almost acting as a self-preservation act for him, as if not knowing could give him the slightest hope to change things, to see you again.

But he couldn’t and deep down he knew it.

Loki was here while you only living in his memories. Golden, perfect, too good for someone like him and newly gone.
