Coming Out

Summary:

My first set of fanfics about operators coming out/ their first experiences of being accepted/understanding themselves. Some of the chapters are more graphic than others. So lookout for the notes at the beginning.

Notes:

This first one is about glaz. No NSFW warnings but there is internalized homophobia.

Work Text:

During his years in secondary school, he would often find himself around both men and women. Although during this time he would often be a third wheel to other couples or even flirty friends on occasion, and in these scenarios he would often feel unease in his stomach. After, during his walks home, when there was only Timur and one other of his friends he would sometimes ask them about this feeling. What he learned was that their answers often depended on who the group of friends earlier had consisted of. For example: if there was a mixed group of people he would get the answer “you must really have a crush on one of those girls hmmm” he would usually laugh and shrug it off. On the other hand when the group consisted of men the friend he would be talking to would make jokes about it and then acted like it never happened. After getting the cold shoulder from one too many of his friends he started to ignore this feeling. Telling himself that it was just a phase or just rejecting it entirely. For a while, it worked. He went through what little secondary education he would go through before he joined Cadet Corp.

After joining he found it difficult to push down his feelings, this led him to have (let's say unsavory thoughts) about other soldiers and rarely higher officers. If ever he found himself thinking those thoughts he would mentally punish himself for his feelings. He would continue this harmful practice into his time in Rainbow. Fortunately for him, he wouldn’t have to wait very long to find someone to confide in. He would finally come to confide in the friendly base medic (and It went a little like this).

Doc heard a hurried knock on his door “hello?” he asked questioningly it was way too early in the day for someone to be hurt already he thought to himself. Gustave walked to the door of his office and found a young attacker looking rather stressed out “Timur! Are you ok?” He said in a quick and hurried voice. Glaz answers back quickly “I think something is wrong with me…” he says quietly, quickly being cut off by Gus trying to check his heartbeat with his stethoscope. “Now take a deep breath for me,” Gus said in a tone of voice Timur could have sworn was his customer service voice. He took a deep breath and looked at the medic with a concerned expression “I don’t think my problem has much to do with my body Doc, I think it has to do with my head” Doc took a step back and looked him up and down. “Well, I didn’t know you had a medical degree Timur!! You could have been helping with all this paperwork!” he cheerfully points to the other side of the room with a desk load of papers. He takes a quick second and opens his mouth to object to the grand mountain of paperwork but Gus stops him. “Of course I was only joking” at this Timur’s shoulders seem to loosen “So why don’t you sit and tell me what is wrong.” Timur then takes a seat on a big brown couch just a meter away. He sits on one end of the couch and Gus takes a seat next to him. He takes a deep breath then says quietly and slowly “There is this feeling that I have when I am around people that I like.” Doc tilts his head a little to one side like a lost puppy while looking at him and saying “That seems a little vague. Is there something you want to tell me?” Glaz looks at the floor and then looks back up at Gus “Is it wrong to have feelings for others? Like of the same sex?” As soon as those words leave his mouth he sees the medic's eyes go wide. He quickly thinks to himself that he should have never said anything in the first place. Glaz quickly tries to get up but Doc stands up blocking his one convenient exit. “I... I should not have said anything!” He says as he looks around the room frantically for another way to escape “I should have just stayed quiet and not have said anything I knew here would be just like home!” Doc looked at him with empathetic eyes as he held out his gloved hand “Timur… here is nothing like home.” Glaz seems to become a bit more relaxed than he was just moments ago and stammers “I.i.I just thought... You.. your eyes I just” Gus then slowly approaches the sniper and puts a hand around him and guides him back to the sofa. “Timur… are you coming out to me?” he turns his head as Gus did earlier. In response, Gus thinks for a second and takes out his phone and laughs, and says “eh Bien euh.. I mean are you telling me that you are attracted to people of the same and opposite sex?” Glaz who was looking down at his shoes looks up and gives Gus a small nod. The medic proceeds to smile and embrace the Russian into his arms “There is nothing wrong with you my dear friend” he says in a friendly voice while patting his back lightly “you are the same person you have always been and no matter who you love we will always have your back.” The sniper gives a small nod into Gus’ shoulder and sniffles. They let go of their hug and sit in silence for a minute then Glaz pipes up “eh, so what does this mean?” Doc looks at the younger man and says “Well I guess the next step is to tell others. ah well, you know when you're ready for it. Of course” He looks at Gus for a minute and says quietly “thank you. You have no clue how much weight has been lifted off me.” The medic smiles and gives him one last big hug.
