Chapter Text
It was a chilly night, and rain pelted the New York tarmac, washing away the dirt of the past few days. But to be able to wash away the dirt from all of New York, a whole tsunami would have to roll over the city. Bucky didn't know if he liked or hated his hometown. It seemed to stink of piss and rubbish everywhere, everything was so dreary and depressing and there were too many crowds in the city center that could literally cramp you. Did he suffer from claustrophobia? Maybe. He'd have to get diagnosed, along with all the other mental illnesses that plagued him. That reminded him, he had a session with his therapist tomorrow. Did he want to go? No. He hated it. But he liked Dr.Raynor, kinda. And it was mandatory, so he had no other choice.
Bucky sighed in annoyance, while the rain had now intensified and poured down on him unprotected. He should have listened to Sam advising him to wear rainproof clothing while he sat on the roof of a building looking for their target. He hated rain as much as he hated snow. He would love to just sit on a beach and enjoy the warmth of the sun, sipping his cocktail. But unfortunately he was denied that, like everything else in life.
A movement brought him back into focus when he saw a man turn the corner. He looked restless, typed on his cell phone like a wild animal and kept looking around nervously. The man was wearing glasses, his suit was already soaked from the rain and he was rushing through the street.
"Target on sight.", He told Sam through the ComLink, while he continued to watch the man through his target tube. He had absolutely no idea who this guy was, but it didn't matter. Sam had received information that the man was being hunted by a monster and needed protection. He seemed like an important figure, which Bucky didn't really care about. He just wanted to get his job done and get back home to dry off and snuggle with his cat.
When another movement appeared in his field of vision, he swiveled his scope back, whereupon he spotted a dark-clad figure walking purposefully towards the man. The figure was smaller, wore a hoodie that covered his face and had a gun in one hand that he disassembled as he ran and tossed it aside. Bucky narrowed his eyes slightly, confused as to what that meant. He noticed his target turn the corner and land on a dead end.
"Fuck." He growled, shouldering his gun before making his way downstairs by climbing down the building's fire escape. Did this idiot not watch any movies? He should know not to go into an alley. Bucky repositioned himself, leaned against the wall and aimed at the unknown dark figure who had now also arrived at the entrance of the alley. The figure stood there casually, blocking the way out for his target. The man turned and held up hands.
“I didn’t do anything!” The man called through the rain that was getting heavier by the minute. "I swear!"
But the figure continued to stare at him in silence as Bucky unlocked his gun and aimed at the attacker, ready to fire.
“Please! I-I didn’t know! ", The man pleaded with the figure, but his words seemed to fall on deaf ears. The figure began to move and held out its gloved hand, whereupon the man suddenly gasped and grabbed his neck. Bucky narrowed his eyes. Was the attacker a mutant?
He rolled his eyes inwardly - why did he always get the freaks? - and shot the attacker, whereupon he staggered briefly to the side before the masked figure looked up at him. But Bucky didn't give the attacker another chance and already jumped down from his position on the fire escape. He struck, was parried, and swung his Vibranium arm at the attacker, who briefly lost its balance and tilted to the side. However, when Bucky's real target had seen a chance to flee and wanted to climb over the fence, the attacker jumped up and ran after him. Bucky was about to reach for the unknown when he reached into the void and was kicked to the floor with a sweeping kick. He was surprised at the speed of the attacker, who had now reached the target again.
The stranger grabbed the man and pulled him down from the fence, who in turn landed on his back on the ground and began to plead for his life. The attacker pulled out a dagger, knelt down on the man and tried to stab, but Bucky was faster and jumped at the attacker, dragging him with him and slamming against the wall of the building. Bucky gasped, rolled over and immediately straightened up again, looking at his hand, which was now holding the attacker's mask. He looked at the attacker, who was slowly getting to his feet. But what was about to happen next he could never have imagined in his long ass life.
When the unknown figure raised its head, glowing eyes looked at him.
And they were red …
Bucky stared petrified at the young woman, shock running through his body as his whole world was bathed in color again. He didn't know what to do, how to react. What was happening here?
But when the woman narrowed her glowing eyes and finally turned her head away to jump at the man, he was released from his stupor and jumped after. He growled when her dagger was rammed into his side and he lost his balance. She grabbed the other guy by the neck, dragged him towards the street and threw him on the floor. The man pleaded and begged, his arms raised protectively over his head, as the woman took off her glove and bit her finger. Bucky blinked in confusion, got up and pulled the knife out of his side. That would heal badly, but at least it would heal. Thanks to the super serum that flowed through his veins.
The woman raised her hand before red liquid oozed out of it and in the next moment floated in the air. Bucky furrowed his eyebrows and stood rooted to the spot as he watched the scene in front of him. Either he was just imagining it or the young woman's blood literally floated in the air and flew towards the man, more precisely into his mouth. A few seconds later the man screamed before he spat blood and writhed on the floor with a gasp. Bucky started running, but by then the woman had already jumped up and was climbing up the fire escape.
The soldier tried in vain to help the man, but there was nothing he could do and watched as death finally took the man, his target lost. He looked up and saw the woman disappear onto the roof before he jumped up again and ran after her. Thanks to his speed, he heaved himself the last meter over the edge quickly.
"Stop!" He called to the woman, who had her back to him and didn't move another millimeter. "Who the hell are you !?", Bucky wanted to know, still slightly shocked that he was seeing colors. The woman turned slowly to face him, her eyes piercing his oceans like daggers, a grin playing on her lips before she raised her hand and whirred something past Bucky's head. Bucky reflexively raised his arm to protect himself, but nothing happened. When he looked back at her, he saw the blood flow back into her hand and close the wound on her thumb.
They both stared at each other for a moment, neither moving. Bucky heard Sam's voice through his ComLink, telling him that he had brought backup to stop the attacker. Bucky swallowed lightly.
“There is no way out!” He called to the woman through the thundering rain, but she did not react, and continued to stare into his eyes. "This doesn't have to end in a fight!" He promised her and raised his hands to show her that he wouldn't hurt her. But when the roaring blades of a helicopter could be heard, she jerked her head up. Pressing her lips together, she looked back at Bucky and bared her teeth slightly before getting into a fighting position. Bucky sighed and did the same. They both ran towards each other, Bucky's vibranium hand blocking her blow while he parried another punch from her with the other.
She was strong, stronger than he had thought. Taking advantage of the rain that had made the ground slippery below them, she crouched down and in the next moment she spun around Bucky's leg with a whirling kick. However, he had already guessed what she had been up to and used her shoulder to roll over and land behind her. He put his metal arm around her neck, squeezing as she tried to fight him. She hit him in the wounded side with her elbow, causing him to growl in pain but not let go of her. The woman, however, seemed to be growing more desperate and determined. She kicked his shin, put her hand to her mouth, and bit into it. Blood suddenly gushed out and whistled past him and down ... into his wound. The next moment Bucky gasped, he couldn't move and the harder he fought against it, the more it hurt.
"Fuck!" He pressed out while she freed herself from his grip and turned to him, breathing heavily. Her crimson eyes stared angrily at him. Bucky didn't know what was happening around him as he tried to fight whatever she was doing to him. She had killed the guy down there coldly, she could do it to him too, but she just stared down at him.
But suddenly the pain stopped, his eyes blinked when he was finally able to move again and watched the woman shudder in front of him as electric shocks were chased through her body. She shook her head slightly, her eyes still fixed on him, before she fell to one side, unconscious. Bucky reached out and caught the woman before she could hit the ground when Sam landed next to him.
“What the fuck just happened?”, asked the new Captain America. Bucky, however, only shook his head slightly, the rain pouring down on him, while he looked at the unconscious woman in his arms.
Yeah what the hell just happened?
