Work Text:
“ranmaru..” his name falls from your lips like a hesitant prayer, as you lightly place your palm on top of his hand. you’re scared: scared that he will slip away like everyone before. this embrace could fall apart as quickly as it was pieced together. his warmth could dissipate under yours, leaving you to be truly alone. that possibility clutches at your spirit, pulling you away from the moment shared with him. your body is resting between his legs, both of your thighs draped over his one. your side rests against his chest, with his arm curled around your waist to hold you close. what if the molecular distance between your bodies is just enough to break this bond?
“i know. i’m not letting you go. not today, not tomorrow, not in a million years.” he whispers.
his words are ones that can be easily feigned, but this time, you sense truth in them. his heartbeat, as serene to your ears as running water over stones, seems to promise that fate.
“i cant lose you.” it’s a simple claim, but you mean it with your entire body and soul. if you lost ranmaru, you feel that your life force would rot, and you along with it.
“that’s not happenin’, not on my watch.” he lifts his hand from under yours, before cradling your chin and bringing your gaze to meet his. though mismatched, his eyes only show one emotion. you know he feels the purest love for you, that there is nothing in this universe that can cause this to falter. you believe him, you truly do, but the trauma of your past slips through the cracks of your foundation. your throat struggles to contract, the heavy weight then overflowing through your eyes, which you let flutter shut. a desperate sob slightly relieves the mass, until you attempt to hold in your grief. you didn’t want to crumble in front of ranmaru like this; you didn’t want him to witness how truly broken you are. he doesn’t mind, as he is, too.
the gentlest pressure on your lips shakes you from your thoughts, as your eyes briefly open to see his closed ones. you melt into his kiss, lightly caressing his lips with yours, and you feel as if this moment will be everlasting. the embrace reassures the both of you that your love is undying, your hearts beating on the same wavelength. resting your palm onto his bicep, your body fully relaxes against his own.
though neither of you want to part from such a tender affection, the kiss is separated to take a moment to breathe. now, your gaze never flickers from his, even as the last of your tears fall upon your cheeks.
“i love you.” ranmaru speaks so softly, his tone almost a plea.
“i love you, too.” you whisper, desperately, as if those words were the last you could say to him.
but in his eyes, you see your promised future.
