Chapter 1: When it rains

Summary:

Day 1 of KuroKen Week 2021: Domestic

Chapter Text

It's raining.

That's the first thing he notices when he opens his eyes.

It's the middle of August, the full effect of summer sun has been torturing Tokyo suburb for weeks. Which means Kenma has been feeling immensely grateful for his lucrative career, providing them the comfort of a fully air-conditioned house. Gone were the days of smothering heat and sticky skin. Now he can just relax in his cold, dry and dark streaming room, gaming the days away.

The pitter-patter of raindrops are muffled by his mostly soundproof walls, but he can still see the downpour through the window of their living room, feels the cold seeping in through the glass. Kenma is a bit disoriented after his nap. The clock on the shelf tells him it's still early in the afternoon but the sun has been overcast by storm clouds, engulfing the room entirely in dim hues and muddled shadows.

Slowly, Kenma stretches out under his thick blanket. The tatami floor mildly pressing into his back. He has forgotten to lay down a rug, again, but he can't find it in himself to be bothered. His black cat-shaped cushion, probably pushed away by him curling up in his sleep, lays just the slightest bit out of reach. He couldn't be bothered to retrieve that, either. Lethargy clings to his limbs like sticky glue, making his eyelids heavy and his lips part for a languid yawn. He is pulled right back to the edge of slumber and wakefulness, but before he can decide either way, the door to the room creaks open.

"Hey, did I wake you?"

A soft familiar voice greets him, followed by  familiar footsteps and a familiar face. Kuroo sits down next to the human-shaped lump on the floor and starts to pull off his tie, suit jacket probably abandoned in the doorway as soon as he gets home like usual. Kenma just drowsily blinks at him.

Apparently coming to the conclusion that he wouldn't get a reply from his sleepy partner, Kuroo gives him an amused smile. He finishes taking off his tie, throwing the constricting garment to the Japanese table on their right. Then he shuffles to lay down beside Kenma. Finally, with one hand under his head and the other resting comfortably on Kenma's hip over the blanket, Kuroo seems to relax. The tense lines of his shoulders give ways to soft slump, and the rigid strength of his back to lax curves.

"You can go back to sleep if you want. I'll wake you when it's time for dinner."

Warm brown eyes stare into liquid amber, Kenma's eyelashes flutter slowly.

Kuroo's hand, warm and heavy, starts to move up and down lazily in a gentle circle. After a minute of locking eyes, Kenma squirms under the confine of his blanket, and one of his arms stretch out to lift up the edge.

Without having to be told, Kuroo let out an adoring huff and move closer to snuggle his partner under the bundle of warmth. Both of them let out a pleased sigh.

"I'm a bit damp from the rain. I'm gonna get both of us sick." He whispers quietly, and despite his concern, doesn't make a move to let go.

"No you aren't" Kenma shoots back, his words slurred with the barest hints of a suppressed yawn.

"I am"

"Aren't."

"Am."

"Aren't"

"Am too."

"Nghhn"

"Now you're just cheating."

Kuroo tightens his arms, while kenma burrows his head under the other's chin to find a comfortable nook, signaling the end of their well-used banter. Together, they close their eyes.

Outside, it's still raining, would probably be for quite some time yet. But within these walls of soft blanket and warm embraces, they are content.

(And if Kenma wakes up with a fever tomorrow, Kuroo promises to only laughs at him for half a minute before feeding him chicken soup and apple yoghurt.)
