Work Text:

It's hard to define the edge of the universe. It's ever-expanding, growing, spreading out into the far reaches of nothingness and creating stars and galaxies in its wake. By the time one could locate the edge it would've already been filled with planets and asteroids. The edge once again out of reach. The universe encompasses everything that has existed, the things that still do, and the things that will.

Tubbo has never had an issue finding the edge of the universe.

When he was still a soldier for L'manberg, he used to drag his friends to the edge with him. They would laugh and joke as they dangled their legs over the edge of the void, everything they cared about behind them. They gazed out into the void, the only thing separating them was the blackstone beneath their fingertips.

When Schlatt was elected, Tubbo would visit the edge more often. He'd whisper state secrets into it, hoping that perhaps it'd reach the right person. Everything that ever mattered was behind him as his risked leaning into the void, getting closer in the hopes that maybe if he gave enough of himself, the world would right itself again. He's pushed into the void with the bang of fireworks behind him and he still doesn't know if it made a difference.

When he was made president, the edge of the universe came to him. He patched it up the first time, filling it with buildings, promises and water. The second time he stood on the edge with Dream by his side as he cast Tommy out to be consumed by the nothingness. He would always find the edge near him, creeping around corners and through alleyways. He did his best to avoid looking at it too closely.

When doomsday came Tubbo remembers seeing the edge of the universe everywhere. The void wasn't welcoming but it wasn't harsh either. "It's hard to be something when it's nothing at all." Tubbo thinks as he throws himself into oblivion over and over again, chasing after Tommy, artefacts and pieces of the place he calls home. He stands at the edge and sings his anthem with his people, his friends.

Over time, Tubbo has found the edge of the universe in many places. From the horizon of a mountain to a lone grave floating on an iceberg. He's well acquainted with how it feels to wander through the vast void, travelling from place to place. He's aware of how it feels when it takes root in his chest, a void where something should be, only smothered by the various projects he's done. He's familiar with the edge of the universe. Enough to call it a friend, that is, if it was able to be anything at all.

Now, Tubbo finds the edge of the universe once again. He dangles his feet over the edge, hands grasping onto the dirt to avoid falling in again. He speaks into it. Stories only he knows are whispered into the void, a slight echo occasionally making its way back. He hums his anthem. The one he gave and lost everything for. The void is in the place the universe used to reside.

Tubbo sits alone humming into the crater of L'manberg.

Notes:

This is my first time posting on ao3! Or well, any place besides Tumblr. Despite this piece being relatively short I wanted to share it beyond Tumblr, since it's something I'm proud of. It's also so I don't chicken out from posting when I write a longer piece, so I don't have to worry about making my first dive into posting here.

I'm thinking of maybe doing a series like this. One where I don't worry about the length because there is no real plot, where I can write about characters experiences and feelings in a vaguely poetic way. I had a lot of fun writing this, so I think it'd be fun to do another.

Lacuna means 'an unfilled space; a gap' and its often used when referring to literary pieces. I figured it fit the concept of spaces the universe hadn't reached, hadn't yet filled in.

This was inspired by @loudly--unladylike's post on Tumblr. You can find me on Tumblr here!
