Basil was sitting next to Sunny in the hospital garden, he was still processing his grandmas death and taking out Sunny’s eye, he couldn’t even believe Sunny cared about him anymore at this point, it all felt so surreal. But he couldn’t really control anything that happened anymore, he wouldn’t be going back to his grandma’s house since she was dead now, and that just made it a bit harder to endure, he starred at the flowers. “Something on your mind Basil?” Sunny asked, putting a hand on Basil’s softly in order to not hurt him in any way. “N-nothing!..” he said, jumping a little which hurt a ton, he winced as he kinda bent over in pain. “S-shit-“ Sunny said, he felt really bad. Sunny put a hand on Basil’s shoulder, “I’m sorry for scaring you..” he said, Basil smiling and looking at him with tears forming in his eyes, “I-it’s okay, I’m just really sore all over right now s-so..” he said, he was in a ton of pain but knew it couldn’t be anything compared to Sunny, he had to endure the pain of having had his eye removed and not being able to see as well anymore, it was terrible for him.
“We should get you back to your room, Basil…” Sunny said, helping Basil up and walking with him to the small hospital room. He stared at Basil and felt really bad, deciding to pick him up carefully and put him on his bed.
Basil felt an arm behind his back, he froze confused until he was scooped up and held up by Sunny, he blushed tremendously as he stared at Sunny’s face, “A-ah um! O-okay…” he mumbled to himself really confused until he was put on his hospital bed, looking at Sunny as he sat down in a chair that was next to Basil’s room. “Sorry about that, I know you’re in pain so I didn’t want you to hurt yourself more..” Sunny said, Basil smiling sweetly “t-thank you..”
Suddenly a nurse came into Basil’s room, she saw Sunny and sighed in relief. “We we’re looking all over for you, your mother came to visit.” She said to Sunny, a woman walking into the room and smiling when she saw Sunny. “Sunny! You got me worried, but I’m happy you’re just with Basil.. well, that actually makes it all easier! I had to tell you that Basil will be moving in with us when you two are discharged from the hospital” his mother said, sighing before saying the last part, “and since his grandmother is gone his parents won’t pay for the house, they even fired Polly before she could have a say in it all, they sold the house..” Basil’s eyes widened when he heard that, Sunny knowing this wouldn’t go down okay. “Basil I know how important that house was to you, but I already moved all your plants to my house and I’m taking care of them until you can move in.. I’m really sorry.” She said.
After a bit more talking and a bit of Basil crying Sunny’s mom left, by this time it was lunch so Sunny had to go to his room to eat it.
They spent every day together in the hospital, wanting to not be apart, and as Basil improved so did Sunny. They were both discharged from the hospital the same day, Basil still a bit bruised up and visibly hurt but he could function fine with the amount of pain, while Sunny’s eye had healed perfectly from the surgery removing it fully since it was too damaged to repair. They got picked up by Sunny’s mom and went to his new house, it was pretty big and had all of Basil’s outdoor plants outside, he smiled knowing Sunny’s mom cared that much about him being happy.
They went inside and settled down, there was one bed in their now shared room, “I couldn’t really find two beds that didn’t go for an atrocious price right now so I hope you two don’t mind sharing.” “I don’t mind” Sunny said, Basil nodding “m-me neither..” ‘OH MY GOD ILL BE SLEEPING WITH SUNNY’ he was screaming on the inside happily.
Sunny sat down on their bed, Basil sitting next to him. “So I’ve got you two enrolled in a school near here, school starts in about a week but it was the best school I could find!” Sunny’s mom said, Sunny nodding and Basil kinda just sitting there, “well I’ll leave you two, I understand it’ll take time to get used to this house.” Sunny’s mom left the room, leaving the two of them alone.
Over the week of preparation Sunny and Basil got even closer through everything they did together. They got their school supplies together and even got some matching keychains of flowers, Sunny knew Basil would like that so he bought them.
And then came going to school, Sunny’s mom was able to get them the same classes except for their not mandatory classes, for those Sunny had band and Basil had gardening, although they would rather stay together both didn’t exactly have the biggest interest in what the other got, but that was a single period.
As they walked in they went to their first class, sitting next to eachother and just talking, people surrounding where they sat clearly making Basil a bit anxious but he could get over it.
Teacher went over some stuff and then class was dismissed, this was all okay until lunch, they sat next to eachother but some other people sat there as well, they tried to ignore them and not really be noticed as they ate, but Basil got a bit bored and anxious not talking to Sunny during this period, but talking to the kid who stood out the most due to his eyepatch would make him stand out, he didn’t realize this until it was too late. “S-so Sunny, uh… good luck in band class.. I know you haven’t played the violin in a while so..” Basil said, not noticing the kids staring at him yet, “I remember a lot, of course it’ll be sad at first since Mari won’t be next to me playing piano but I can handle it” Sunny said, smiling at Basil. “Hey eyepatch! What even happened to you?” A kid asked, Sunny looking at them then back at Basil, ending up just ignoring them until they got mad “eyepatch! I was talking to you! It’s rude to ignore people you know” the kid said, “h-he doesnt wanna t-talk about it..” Basil said, shaking a little as he felt that same guilt from taking his eye again. “Nobody was talking to you little miss priss..” the kid grumbled “I don’t have to tell you, and he’s a guy.” Sunny said, putting his hand on Basil’s to calm him down. “Why would a guy look so girlish then? Probably one of those trannies..” the person said, his friends laughing as he said a literal slur, “Basil let’s just go” Sunny said and Basil was shaking more than before, he was gonna cry. “Shit.. Basil come on” Sunny said, but he couldn’t get him up in time, “I-I’m sorry S-Sunny….” He said, “Basil it wasn’t your fa-“ “so now she’s crying? What a little bitch!” The kid said, Sunny for once didn’t know what to do. “Basil I don’t blame you for what happened, just come on” he said, Basil shutting down even more as the kids made fun of him more. “Can you assholes just leave him alone? What the fuck is wrong with you all?” Sunny asked really pissed, he didn’t want Basil to get bullied over this, he knew how horrible the bullying on Basil had been all his life.
He resorted to what he wanted to do the least, he grabbed Basil by the arm and practically dragged him out as he cried, taking him to the bathroom to calm down. “Basil if you’re gonna have a breakdown you need to tell me so we can get you out of there” Sunny said, Basil sitting on one of the toilets so he wouldn’t be shaking a ton while standing up. “I-I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” he kept repeating to himself.
After a while Basil finally calmed down, he got himself looking at least okay before they headed to class, but when they walked in people were staring at them, they were clearly talked about.
School ended with just weird looks, they went outside together and waited for the bus, that was until the boy came up and pushed Basil down, he felt his body ache a crazy amount from the wounds that hadn’t fully healed yet like the bruising on his organs. “Basil!” Sunny said, kneeling down to help him as he coughed a lot and teared up. “Whoops, seems like she’s in pain.” The boy said before grabbing Sunny’s eyepatch and pulling it off, he didn’t expect to see a still healing long cut that split the eyelid in two as well as his lack of anything in the socket, the eye being held together with stitches, he could care less about the eye being exposed because Basil had started crying again. “What’s going on here!” A security guard asked, seeing the boy holding an eyepatch and being confused, that was until Sunny looked over. “He pushed my friend with unhealed wounds down and took that from me” he said, the guard walking towards the boy and taking the eyepatch from him. “Come with m- hey! Get back here!” He yelled, running after the boy who had started bolting off.
“Are you okay? Can you stand?” Sunny asked, Basil nodding as he got up, people staring at them, they all clearly felt bad. “Alright, when we get home you can just rest” Sunny said as he put back on the eyepatch.
They got back to the house, Sunny sighing as he looked down a bit, Basil heading for their room. “I-I’ll just be in our room..” he said, Sunny following close behind when Basil was planning on going away from him.
They sat on their bed, one of Sunny’s arms around Basil to keep him calm, Basil leaning on Sunny as he just stared blankly at the wall. “Hey Basil, would you mind if uh.. y-know..” Sunny couldn’t really get the words out, so he decided to go for it, hugging onto Basil really tightly. He blushed a good amount before leaning into the hug, it felt nice and warm…
“Thank you Sunny…” he said, a sweet smile on his face. This caused Sunny to blush as well, letting out a small chuckle as he held Basil close to himself.
They just stayed hugging until Sunny’s mom walked in, then instantly playing it off like it was a quick hug, “hey mom” Sunny said, his mom smiling as she said “dinner will be very soon, I’ve made a pork roast for dinner!” She said, leaving after telling them that. Basil leaned onto Sunny’s shoulder, Sunny patting him on the head, “Sunny I need to tell you something I’ve wanted to for well… a while… but then after Mari passed you stopped leaving the house and… when you came back out I thought I could tell you but then you were gonna move and all that s-stuff happened… but! Now I can tell you!” Basil said, smiling as he looked at Sunny.
“I um… I like you, I have for years honestly… and I just hope you don’t hate me for it…” he said, dread setting in as Sunny went silent. “B-Basil I- I uh, I like you too..” Sunny said, smiling a bit as he looked at Basil whose eyes lit up. “R-really?” “Yeah..” Basil stared at Sunny, Sunny deciding he would try to kiss Basil. He put his hands on Basil’s shoulders and pulled him in, their lips touching. Basil’s face flushing as he closed his eyes, Sunny doing the same. They stayed there for a few seconds, Sunny moving one of his hands up to Basil’s cheek, rubbing it with his thumb before they pulled apart, Basil looking away while smiling awkwardly, “I’ve uh.. I’ve never kissed someone…..” he said, chuckling a little as he slightly covered his face with his hands. “M-me neither..” Sunny said, pulling Basil into a hug to hopefully make him less embarrassed. “Basil, would you um.. would you like to be my partner?” Sunny asked, Basil nodding, “yeah, I’ve wanted to for so long….” He said, he was extremely happy.
After a while they went to the living room to wait for dinner, Basil clearly a bit embarrassed still from the kiss while Sunny acted like nothing had happened. Sunny’s mom walked out expecting them to be in their bedroom but saw they were sitting in the living room, not really going much except sitting next to eachother. “Boys! Dinner is ready!” She said, Sunny getting up and Basil following him to the dining room, they ate dinner and talked with Sunny’s mom a bit, it was nice for Basil to talk with someone who’s a parent.
After dinner they got ready for bed and got in it, “Basil, can I hold you?” Sunny asked, Basil blushing a bit and not responding for a second until he let out a simple “sure..” and just like that Sunny hugged Basil, it felt really nice to be this close to him, feeling his body heat and his breath against him. By the morning they hadn’t moved much at all, Sunny’s mom walking in and smiling, she didn’t realize they were hugging for a more romantic reason but still found it nice that they had made up so fast.
“Basil, bus is here” Sunny said as he waited for Basil to zone back in and get on with him, they were a little slow to get on so seat spaces where now limited, they’d been going to school for about two months now, and this was surprisingly the first time they say separately, something about it just felt really wrong honestly. Basil sat as close to Sunny as possible, but he had to sit next to a girl who was looking him up and down, she even noticed he was staring at Sunny. “You two are always together..” she said, Basil looking over for a second but staring at Sunny again moments later, he couldn’t really take his eyes off him since he felt horrible anxiety away from him and he couldn’t seem to remember where to get off of the bus at, being next to Sunny helped a ton. “It’s rude to not respond you know..” the girl said, tapping Basil on the shoulder, causing him to jump a bit. “U-um..” he looked at her then back at Sunny, then back at her, then back at Sunny. He looked a bit disorientated now, tearing up a small bit, he just hoped he wouldn’t cry. “You two also get off at the same stop, so, are you neighbors?” She asked, Basil looked down and tried to ignore her staring at him, he wanted to get out of that situation really ba- “Basil, come on” Sunny said, Basil getting right up and out of there as fast as he could.
“Was she bothering you?” Sunny asked Basil as they walked back, Basil shaking his head as he wiped tears from his eyes, “s-she was trying to talk to me and I just… I hate talking to new people.. y-you know?” He said, Sunny nodding in response. “Hey Basil, Kel reached out to me,” Sunny said, Basil looking at him with a bit of a curious expression. “Him, Hero, and Aubrey wanna come over, they finally forgave us I guess” Sunny said, Basil feeling happy “I’m glad t-they forgave us, we did some horrible things…” Basil said, Sunny nodded and grabbed Basil’s hand, “we should definitely apologize together..” he said, Basil nodding in response.
After a week it was finally the day they’d all come over, Hero was driving them there so as soon as his car pulled in the driveway and they got out Basil’s stomach turned a little, he was very anxious and didn’t want to get beaten up. Sunny was next to him, he hugged Basil tightly, “we have to see them again one day, and this is the day.” He said, Basil nodding as he let out a shaky sigh.
Sunny went to the door to let them in, Basil staying in their room. “Hey Sunny… it’s been a bit..” Hero said, it was clear there was an awkward silence among them, Aubrey walking in and past Sunny, “I only came because they made me..” she said, unable to fully forgive Sunny. “Hey Sunny! How’ve you been?..” Kel asked, “I’ve been okay, Basil is upstairs.” Sunny replied, leading them all up to the bedroom to see Basil sitting on their bed, his eyes widening when everyone walked in. “Basil, nice to see you aga-“ Hero got interrupted with a simple, “I’m a horrible person.. you shouldn’t be happy to see me…” Basil couldn’t even forgive himself at this point, “Basil it’s okay, we know you were just trying to help Sunny” Kel said, getting a little uncomfortable as he imagined how Sunny and Basil even managed to do it. “Don’t even try to reason with them guys, they’re sick in the head” Aubrey said, she was clearly hurting a ton, the tone of her voice not being as hostile as it was sad.
“Aubrey I know we can’t change what we did, but we were scared little kids, we didn’t know what to do.. so we panicked and did the first idea we had…” Sunny said to Aubrey, her facial expression softening a little as she could really tell Sunny felt horrible about it, he really loved Mari and she knew that. “It was just something behind us.. it was controlling us.. just like how something took out Sunny’s eye..” Basil said, starting to cry as all the guilt covered his entire existence. “What do you mean something?” Hero asked, Kel and Aubrey were confused as well. “Something! Something that won’t leave you alone, it’s like a plague in your brain and it keeps screaming at you and making you unable to think..” Basil said, “so it’s like.. ptsd?” Aubrey asked, she finally seemed to be worrying a little when Basil started bawling as he spoke about something that was like a mental illness. “Something made me… something was behind me.. it- it hurts Sunny and killed Mari and- and it wouldn’t stop trying to kill me..” Basil sighed as he wiped his tears, “but something is gone, Sunny helped something leave me alone..” Basil finished, he looked at Sunny who smiled at him in return. “Basically Basil was well, struggling the whole time to just hold on, but he’s doing better now that something is gone and all..” Sunny said, everyone feeling a bit bad for Basil as he stared down now, “Sunny, Basil, I’m sorry for how I acted at the hospital, I guess hearing you two faked something so horrible really well, hurt..” Hero said, he was the nicest at that time but his words still hurt, “I’m sorry too, we all were horrible because we didn’t understand what you two were going through, we didn’t even know how Sunny lost his eye..” Kel said, going over to hug them both, “I’m.. i’m still mad… but I’m sorry” Aubrey admitted, the room went quiet for a while, it was definitely awkward.
After a while Sunny suggested they went downstairs and watched tv, everyone agreed to that and went down, Basil and Sunny were on the couch with Kel, Aubrey on a side chair and Hero on the floor. They just sat there and talked about how different their lives have been recently, especially with Sunny having moved away and all. There was a new family living where Sunny used to live, it felt very odd when Kel and Aubrey first saw their car in Sunny’s old driveway, it felt wrong honestly. “It’s been pretty weird not seeing you guys a lot, not being able to go to the park, or even just hang out with you all, it’s been hard to adjust to..” Sunny said, wishing things were back to how they used to be, “yeah, but hey! We’re here for the night so that’s nice at least!” Kel said, patting Sunny on the back. “Yeah..”
They all ate dinner and went back to Sunny and Basil’s room, Aubrey getting to sleep on a kinda small couch in the room while Kel and Hero slept on the floor. “So you two just share a bed?” Aubrey asked when Basil and Sunny got in the same one, “yeah, we don’t mind so there’s no real reason to get separate ones” Sunny answered, Aubrey not questioning it further. They all fell asleep pretty fast.
In the morning Sunny had already shifted enough to have a hand on Basil, Aubrey being the first awake and seeing this, it definitely made her a big suspicious of them, although not like she was one to talk, she was a lesbian after all. Kel woke up soon after, followed by Sunny, Basil, the Hero, who was surprisingly disoriented by being in Sunny and Basil’s room. They all went downstairs after a bit, Sunny’s mom making them toast, bacon, and eggs, it was a nice breakfast. “Do you all wanna come with me and Basil to the park near here?” Sunny asked, “sure” Hero said, Aubrey nodding in response while Kel said “yeah! It’ll be awesome to see what the park you guys have is like!”
They all walked for a while until they made it to a pretty big park, way bigger than the other one. Basil had been helping with the flowers that grew here, keeping them watered when he and Sunny came here. “Holy crap! It’s huge!” Kel yelled as he looked around, there was a big basketball court which he obviously was drawn to. “Basil planted some flowers here recently, I think he called them snapdragons.. they’re cool, you squeeze them and the flower opens like a mouth” Sunny said, Basil already on his way over to the flowers, everyone following behind him to watch him tend to the flowers, that was until Kel ran off to the basketball court, there were some people over there and they got along with him instantly, “there he goes..” Aubrey said, Hero nodding.
Sunny sat down next to Basil who was staring at the flowers, he looked a bit sad, “is something wrong?” Sunny asked, Basil shaking his head in response, “I just, I don’t want everyone to leave so soon” Basil said, lightly touching a snapdragon. “I understand, I honestly wish we were still back there, even back before what we did…” Sunny said, putting a hand on Basil’s shoulder to try and comfort him a little, he clearly would miss everyone a ton. “Hey Sunny, can I ask you something… in private…” Aubrey asked, Sunny nodding and getting up to go over to her, she pulled him away from Basil and Hero. “So Sunny… are you and Basil dating?” She asked him, Sunny nodding in response. “Oh, that’s cool I guess..” she said, it was easier to get that out of him than she imagined, but at least she knew now. Sunny walked back over to Basil, he could tell Basil was still very off so he decided he’d try to get Basil back on his feet, he looked at Basil and kissed him on the cheek, instantly making Basil’s face turn red and his body stiffen, “S-Sunny-“ he said, Sunny smirking, that did the trick. Hero looked at Aubrey, he was definitely surprised, but seeing Aubrey’s expression definitely made him feel dumb, she could clearly tell while he was clueless. “Hey guys! Whats.. what’s going on?” Kel asked, Hero going over to him, “so Sunny kissed Basil, and now Basil is embarrassed I’m assuming” he said, Kel’s eyes lighting up when he heard what Hero said, “Sunny! So you finally got with Basil Huh! You two always seemed like you were gonna date or something.. but good for you two!” Kel ran up and hugged them, Basil snapping out of it when he smelled how bad Kel stinked, “K-Kel you should probably take a shower…” Basil said, looking uncomfortable clearly. “Sorry Basil! Showers can wait!” Kel responded, it was really nice to be with everyone again huh.
After a bit they all went back to the house, it was time to say goodbye, “well, I hope to see you two again soon” Hero said, smiling sweetly while Kel went up and hugged them, “I’ll see you two soon right? Maybe you guys can come down to faraway to visit!” Kel said, Aubrey sighing as she walked up to Basil and Sunny, “I hope to see you guy’s again soon honestly, it’s nice hanging out like the old times…” Aubrey said. Hero, Kel, and Aubrey got in the car, Sunny and Basil waving as they left.
It felt great to have made up.
