The Choice is Ours

Summary:

(*SPOILERS FOR SEASON 6 AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!)

Lucifer refuses to promise to not be in Rory's life. He knows that he has a choice. There is always a choice and he will never choose to abandon his daughter.

Insert for halfway through season 6, episode 10, "Partners 'Till the End," during the part where Lucifer and Chloe are saying goodbye to Rory.

Notes:

I hated the way that they did the ending where Lucifer wasn't apart of his daughter's life. I felt like they deserved better. I do like that they were together in the afterlife but hate how he wasn't given the choice to be happy. So, this is my head canon of Lucifer refusing to abandon his daughter and getting his happy ending with Chloe.

Work Text:

He had never had any trouble keeping his promises before now. He was a Devil of his word but this was different. This was his daughter asking him to leave her. He had just barely wrapped around the fact that Rory was their daughter.

The Detective had told him not too long ago that she was pregnant. They were both ecstatic but also terrified at what this meant for them. He was so happy before it dawned on him that he wouldn't get to be there for any of it. He wouldn't be there to hold her hair back for her or accompany her to doctor appointments. There wouldn't be any late night trips for strange cravings he would tease her for but fulfill anyways.

He wanted to watch her body change to accommodate their growing child. Whenever she felt self conscious, he would remind her how beautiful she was and that she was incredible. Most importantly, he wanted them to be a family. He finally had the chance to have a family. He would be damned if he let it slip away without a fight.

"Rory, I can't. I'll miss your childhood. I'll miss your life," Lucifer replied desperately.

"It's just a blip in our eternal existence. I get that now. I was so angry before but I'm not angry anymore."

"No, don't go. Please, don't do this. I can't lose you!"

"Sorry, it has to be this way Dad. Please promise me. This is how it has to be so you can go help the lost souls," Rory explained.

"No, it doesn't have to be this way," Lucifer replied, placing a hand on her shoulder.

The minute Lucifer placed his hand on her shoulder, the time portal disappeared. The swirling lights surrounding their daughter were gone. All that remained was her, standing in front of her parents, wearing a confused expression on her face.

"Dad, what do you mean?"

"Lucifer, what are you talking about?"

"If there's one thing I have learned, it is that you always have a choice. Your mother and I chose each other. I chose to become vulnerable around her. Now I am choosing the people I love, my family. You're my daughter and I could never abandon you," Lucifer replied softly.

"What about the lost souls?" Rory questioned.

"If your Uncle Amenadiel can be God and be apart of his child's life, then why shouldn't I?" Lucifer said simply.

"I guess I can't argue with that logic. I love you both," Rory replied before allowing the time portal to reopen. "See you guys later."

"I love you my angel. See you soon."

"I love you sweetheart. We'll see you soon."

Rory gave them one last look before letting her hand slip from theirs and let the time portal take her. The light that had surrounded their daughter was now gone. They took comfort in the fact that this wasn't goodbye. They would both get to watch her grow up into an amazing young woman. Besides, they finally got their happy ending.

"So, what happens now?" Chloe asked.

"Darling, I believe we just got our happy ending," Lucifer replied.  "For now, how are you feeling?"

"I feel tired and nauseous but also really happy."

"Ah our little parasite already getting to you?"

"Well, she is half her father after all," Chloe quipped, yawning slightly.

"Yes and she is also half her beautiful mother who should get some rest," Lucifer replied softly.

"Carry me?"

"Anything for you Chloe."

He picked her up bridal style and carried her to what he now considered their bedroom. He gently placed her on the bed and couldn't help but take her in. She was so beautiful, even when she was snoring like an Albanian field wench. There were those mornings after she stayed over; her golden hair fanned out like a halo, that he knew that she was the angel. Then, there was her adorable concentrated face whenever they had a case. It was now that he found her most beautiful.

She was half asleep in their bed, growing their child. A small smile crept onto Lucifer's face upon seeing Chloe's hand on her stomach.

"I love you both so much," he whispered, laying his hand on top of hers.

"We love you too," she whispered back before letting sleep take her.

He laid beside her and just watched her sleep. He couldn't help but smile at the fact that they finally got their happy ending. There had been poisonings, kidnappings, evil twins, and so much more but he would do it all again. All of it led to this moment with his detective. The Devil had found his one true love. She was his Heaven on Earth and now it was only getting brighter.

The only thing left was to make her his wife. He decided that could wait for another day. For now, he would let her rest. They had all the time in the world.
