Work Text:

After years of scrambling to pay rent and shitty jobs, Katya’s life finally seemed like it was falling into place. She’d gotten a job at a theater company in Los Angeles, helping to build sets. She loved to build and create, ending a day covered in paint with her hands full of splinters was pure satisfaction. Oddly Studio was home to hundreds of plays each year, ranging from close to Broadway quality to children’s theater. Katya found this even more exciting, her budget could be anywhere from a couple thousand dollars to a hundred thousand depending on the event. Of course it wasn’t all hers to spend, she’d have to work closely with the tech team. Regardless, the possibilities seemed just as endless as her excitement for a change of pace.

Katya’s first project was one of the less glamorous ones, she’d be preparing a set for a children’s play. Every summer the theater would have elementary school kids put on a play, with the help of their rich parents of course. This meant a smaller budget as well as working with the theater’s drama teacher. She’d heard lots of things about the woman, Ms. Mattel, and while most of them were good, none were reassuring. She’s good at her job, very proper and professional, charitable, hot, modest. Katya had never gotten along with “modest” people, and in her experience “proper and professional” were code words for someone who had a stick so far up their ass that it couldn’t even see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hot she could work with though, it was no secret that Katya loved to be around attractive people. Who doesn’t? From the photos she’d seen, people were correct in what they’d said about Trixie Mattel’s looks. She was curvy and tall, her legs seeming to go on for miles. Of course, Katya had also heard that the woman was straight, but she wasn’t so sure about that. Something about a drama teacher with an affinity for vintage dresses just didn’t register as very straight to her.

Katya decided on heels for her first day, a choice she knew was bold considering she’d likely be painting and working with plywood all day. The rest of her outfit was more appropriate, consisting of tight black jeans she’d already ruined with paint splatters and a t-shirt from one of her favorite Russian artists. Katya lazily tugs on her leather jacket as she walks through the double doors of the theater, easily finding her way backstage thanks to the tour she’d had during her interview. She clutches her bag anxiously, as she hears a pair of high heels that weren’t her own clicking against the concrete floors. Katya was supposed to meet with Trixie to discuss the set, and she was already nervous to mess something up. Katya was a great artist but she was messy during the creation process, something she was sure her new coworker wouldn’t like if what she’d heard was correct.

“Katya!” She introduces, holding out her hand to shake the other woman’s perfectly manicured one.

“Ms. Mattel,” Trixie responds, raising a brow as she takes in Katya’s appearance, “Did they pull you off the streets and bring you in?”

Katya let’s out a brief uncomfortable laugh, feeling small underneath the harsh gaze of the other woman. She shakes it off and swallows hard, determined to play her normal flirtatious game of trying to see how fast she could get into a girl’s pants.

“Rude,” Katya crosses her arms and smirks, looking the woman up and down, “Bold coming from someone who looks like the poster child for failed conversion therapy.”

Katya laughs but Trixie doesn’t think it’s funny, not in the slightest. She quickly halts her laughter, trying to figure out if she should make a rambling apology.

“I am straight,” Trixie snaps, huffing as she messes with the papers in her hand, “And don’t forget that you’re a new employee, completely expendable. You’re working under me, not the other way around.”

“I wouldn’t mind working under you,” Katya responds without thinking, grinning proudly as she notices a light blush on the woman’s face.

“Anyways,” Trixie starts, quickly moving on, “I have the script here as well as the songs and some ideas I have for the set. I’m in charge of supervising the production team, so come and find me if you have any questions.”

Katya nods and takes the stack of papers, her long fingers brushing across the woman’s soft hands. The amount of material she was being given seemed a bit excessive for a children’s play, but it’s exactly what she expected from Trixie. As the woman leaves, Katya can’t help but watch the way her hips sway, her long blonde hair bouncing with each step.

Katya had quickly gotten to work after Trixie had left. She now stands in front of a table of sketches and compositions, studying them closely. Katya is pulled out of her thoughts as she hears the woman’s heels clicking against the floor once again.

“Time to leave,” Trixie says, glancing down at her watch then up to the clock as if to double or triple check, “Same time tomorrow, don’t be late.”

Katya rolls her eyes and stuffs the drawings into her messenger bag, fishing for her pack of nicorette. She would much prefer smoking, but that would have to wait until she was back home.

“Smoking is bad for you, yknow?” Trixie scolds, cocking her hip as she watches Katya struggle to get a piece out of her newly-found pack of gum.

Katya snorts and tosses the gum into her mouth, chewing for a second before responding, “I’m not smoking, I’m chewing gum.”

“The only people who chew that stuff are smokers,” Trixie states, crossing her arms across her chest, “I’m just saying, nicotine isn’t good for you.”

“Neither is keeping that stick so far up your ass,” Katya laughs, shaking her head at the woman before turning to leave, walking towards the double doors.

Katya’s game wasn’t going well so far, instead of flirting she was mostly insulting the other woman. To be fair, she’d never dealt with someone so stubborn and judgmental before. Regardless, Katya couldn’t help but find the woman attractive despite her attitude.
