“I knew one of us should’ve stayed on the Enterprise ,” Kirk lamented as he threw a pebble out of the mouth of the cave.
“It is illogical to dwell on the matter. We cannot reverse our decision.”
Kirk glared at Spock and took a seat next to him. He rubbed his hands together, trying to warm himself up. Luckily, the planet they had crashed on wasn’t completely frozen over. The air had a slight crispness to it but nothing unbearable. At least for him. Spock, he knew, was a lot more sensitive to the cold.
“Here,” he said, taking the Vulcan’s hands into his own, “I’m sure you’re freezing.”
Spock made no comment. A good sign.
“Do you think they’re alright?” Kirk said quietly, “The crew, I mean.”
He’d curled into his partner’s side. Not only for Spock’s warmth but for his own as well.
“Mister Scott is a competent engineer and, in a crisis, an excellent commander,” Spock’s voice had a slight waver to it, his teeth lightly chattering against one another, “The crew is fine.”
Kirk nodded. He couldn’t help but feel guilty, though. He’d abandoned his crew, left them without a captain or a first officer.
It wasn’t his fault, he knew that. But the idea that his crew, his family was out in space, without him, as he sat, stranded, in a cave, terrified him.
