The Last Thing You Remember

Summary:

“I love you, too,” Shino whispered to Kiba’s retreating warmth, but it was too late.

Kiba was already gone.

Notes:

Reads like a PWP at the beginning but I promise it's not.

I never made it past Gaara's death in Shippuden, so nothing that happens after that will be acknowledged. I tried to write it generic enough that it could hopefully fit into any future timepoint in the series.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kiba was warm beside him in bed. The man was always a furnace. Luckily, it was winter, so Shino snuggled in, spooning his lover. Kiba hummed languidly as Shino trailed playful nips up his neck.

"Mm, good morning," Kiba's voice was rough. Shino loved it.

"Yes," Shino said, grazing fingers across the ripple of muscle and ribs that was Kiba's side as the younger man stretched. "A very good morning."

He deliberately ground his morning arousal against the cleft of Kiba's ass, earning a bark of laughter.

Kiba twisted to capture Shino's wandering lips in a kiss, reaching back to pull them flush together. His sharp canines grazed Shino's lips as they kissed. His abs flexed and relaxed rhythmically under Shino's hand as he rocked his hips in counterpoint to Shino.

"Fuck, Shino," Kiba whined as Shino stroked lower, lower, lower, down to the tender insides of Kiba's thighs, but never where it counted. "You tease."

He nipped sharply at Shino's lower lip, and Shino groaned in response.

"Ask me," he breathed, skimming his teeth along the slope at the juncture of Kiba's neck and ear. Kiba groaned and arched, writhing in an attempt to get contact where he wanted it.

"Damnit," he growled, throwing his head back. Shino had to reel back to dodge it, but quickly returned to sucking a mark into Kiba's neck.

"Ask," he insisted, ghosting his fingers up Kiba's chest. Kiba battled with himself for another minute.

"Please," he finally whined, and Shino rewarded him with a moan and swirled a thumb through the precum at the head of Kiba's arousal, dragging it down the shaft and back up.

Thank the First Kiba always slept naked.

Shino pumped slowly and torturously, until Kiba was begging please-please-please- then he abruptly let go to shimmy out of his own boxers.

"Shino," Kiba mewled, trying to turn over but Shino stopped him with a hand across his chest. Reaching across to the nightstand, he returned with lube and two slick fingers.

"Oh," Kiba moaned as Shino ran slick fingers along his crack, "Oh, hell yeah."

Kiba rocked back against the gentle caress, but Shino stilled him, massaging a pert nipple as he rubbed closer and closer to where Kiba wanted it. Finally, when Kiba was fairly cursing, he pushed the first finger in. He pumped in and out, searching for the right angle. Kiba's shout and vocal praise informed him he had it, so he added the second finger and scissored.

"Yes, yes, yes," Kiba gasped, taught as a tripwire.

Shino stretched his lover until Kiba was begging for more, and then stretched a little more. Finally satisfied, he removed his fingers and slicked himself.

"Please, Shino, please," Kiba begged, "C'mon, need you in me. Please."

Shino lined up and sank in. Both men groaned. Shino pressed his forehead into the divot between Kiba's shoulder blades, taking a shaking breath before pulling back and pushing in.

"Yesss," Kiba hissed, thrusting in counterpoint. Shino mouthed at the sweat dappling Kiba's back in agreement. The steadying hand he'd placed on Kiba's chest drifted downward.

Their breath went ragged as he took Kiba's dripping cock in hand and stroked in time with his thrusts.

"Fuck, Shino-" Kiba shouted, coming hot and sticky over Shino's hand. With a moan, Shino followed him over, giving a few final stuttering thrusts before disentangling them.

"That's the best way to start the day," Kiba pronounced, flopping over to grin at Shino.

Shino quite agreed.

"Breakfast?" he asked, hoping to further waylay Kiba. Kiba laughed and darted in for a peck before rolling out of bed.

"Can't," he apologized. "Got that mission in Mist today. I'm already late," he winked. "Ugh, I hate going to Mist. It's humid and I smell like wet dog."

Privately, Shino did not think Kiba ever smelled like wet dog. Musky, sometimes, but never like Akamaru after playing in the rain.

"Be safe," Shino said instead as Kiba hopped in the shower.

"Always," Kiba's promise floated back to him.

Satisfied, Shino went to prepare breakfast, knowing Kiba would happily take something to go.

Pushing aside a plate of old toast, he lopped four new slices off a loaf of bread and popped them in the toaster.

"Gah, where's my kunai holster?" Kiba shouted.

"By the moth display," Shino shouted back.

"Aha!"

Shino smiled to himself as he rummaged for jam and butter. He had just finished buttering the first two slices when Kiba came bounding in.

"Thanks!" he said, snatching them off the plate before Shino could say anything. "Love ya!" he threw over his shoulder around a mouthful of toast.

"I love you, too," Shino replied to Kiba's retreating warmth, but it was too late. Kiba was already gone.

The doorbell rang. Shino ignored it.

Kiba's sharp canines grazed Shino's lips as they kissed. His abs flexed and relaxed rhythmically under Shino's hand as he rocked his hips in counterpoint to Shino.

The doorbell rang again. Shino sighed and withdrew. Pulling on pants and his jacket, he answered the door.

"Good morning!" Hinata greeted him, holding several suspicious looking bags.

It was a good morning, he thought moodily but let Hinata enter.

"Breakfast?" Shino asked, eyeing the bags.

"No, silly!" Hinata laughed. "Supplies for your birthday party tonight!"

Shino didn't recall agreeing to a party, but a glance at the calendar confirmed that it was his birthday. Belatedly, he realized the door to his bedroom was open and Hinata was headed that way. Dashing forward, he slammed the door shut. Hinata gave him a quizzical look, and he tried to act like he had done nothing unusual.

Kiba always slept naked.

Hinata smiled wryly at him and headed for the kitchen. She set the bags down and cleared several plates of toast.

"I know you didn't want a party," she says, loading the now-empty plates into the dishwasher, "But everyone will be so happy to see you! You've been such a recluse lately."

Shino ignored her teasing and helped her locate the dishwashing powder.

"I've been busy," he lied. A flash of red and a breathy gasp from Kiba flitted across his mind. The box of soap slipped from his hands, spilling across the floor. Hinata tisked and fetched a broom. Shino stared at it blankly while she swept.

"Well," she said, finished, "it's good you made time for this."

Gently, she directed him to the bags of party supplies and roped him into helping her set up.

Kiba was warm beside him in bed. The man was always a furnace. Luckily, there was a late spring cold snap, so Shino snuggled in, spooning his lover. Kiba hummed languidly as Shino trailed playful nips up his neck.

"Mm, good morning," Kiba's voice was rough. Shino loved it.

Shino's alarm went off. He groaned and silenced it.

"Ignore it," Kiba whispered, nipped at Shino's jaw.

"Can't," Shino lamented, "Gennin cell assignments today."

"Just be late," Kiba laughed. Shino wished he could but he had no choice.

"Can't," Shino repeated, disentangling himself.

After a brisk shower, Shino prepared toast for himself and left Kiba's on the counter.

At the Academy, Shikamaru stood outside looking bored beside a flustered Iruka. A gaggle of children ran amok on the playground behind them. One particularly brash child was proudly showing off his shiny, new kunai to anyone who would listen. Occasionally, Iruka would snap at someone to stop that right now or else-

Shino was aware that most gennin graduated between ten and eleven, but these children were painfully young.

Soon after, Chouji, Ino, Sakura, and Neji arrived. Naruto was late, but when he finally came crashing in, Shikamaru perked up.

"All right everyone," he drawled, "get over here for your cell assignments."

Iruka clapped his hands and herded the kids into an approximation of a line.

"Me first!"

"No, me first!"

Two students, the one with the shiny new kunai and an Inuzuka, began shoving each other, vying to be the first in line.

"Stop that-" Iruka snapped, but it was too late. They were already brawling. Before Iruka could step in or the Jounin could intervene, a flash of metal glinted in the morning sunlight and the Inuzuka was on the ground, pressing a hand to his brow as blood gushed over his face.

Suddenly, Shino couldn't breathe. The world tilted dangerously.

A flash of red, the smell of iron and sweat. Kiba's breathy gasp. Fingers grasping at Shino's coat, shaking him.

"No," Shino shouted, breaking free.

"Get a hold of yourself, Aburame!" Neji spat, dusting himself off and straightening his vest.

"Calm down, would ya?" Shikamaru was complaining as Iruka called for a medic and Sakura rushed to help.

"I-" Shino began, but could not fathom what had caused him to panic so. "I apologize."

"Well, now that that hassle is over," Shikamaru muttered once Sakura had finished healing the Inuzuka's head wound and Iruka was done scolding the other child. "Who's ready for cell assignments?"

The remaining gennin cheered, and Shino tried to quell the queasy feeling in his stomach.

Kiba was warm beside him in bed. The man was always a furnace. Summer was settling in and it was warm inside, but Shino snuggled in anyways, spooning his lover. Kiba hummed languidly as Shino trailed playful nips up his neck.

"Where ya goin'?" Kiba murmured, rubbing at the sleep in his eye when Shino pulled away.

"Mission," Shino explained, pulling on pants and his jacket.

"Just be late," Kiba tempted, sprawling sensuously over the covers.

"Can't," Shino sighed, wishing he could. Kiba whimpered while Shino double checked the contents of his thigh holster.

"Where to?" Kiba asked, watching lazily as Shino donned his hitai-ate.

"Mist," Shino answered. The world blurred at the edges. Shino blinked a few times to clear his vision.

"Huh. I have a mission there today, too," Kiba noted. Tensions with Mist were high, and it seemed they were always being sent to Mist.

"Be safe," Kiba mumbled into a pillow. Shino swallowed past the sudden lump in his throat.

"Always," he promised, heading to the kitchen to make them toast.

His gennin were waiting for him at the gates as agreed upon. He sized them up silently for a moment, until they fidgeted.

"This is your first C-rank mission," he reminded them. "Be careful. Follow directions precisely."

"Yes, Aburame-sensei," they intoned, rolling their eyes. Shino resisted the urge to sigh and took to the trees.

Just outside of Mist, they were ambushed by three chuunin.

"Hand over the scroll, and no-one gets hurt," the Mist leader sneered.

"Never!" the Inuzuka snarled, clutching the scroll tightly.

"Be quiet," Shino admonished, sizing up the three chuunins. Together, it would be more than he could handle while also protecting his students. Not without the element of surprise. Perhaps, if he could split them up and pick them off one by one…

"Remember our evasion training?" he said abruptly. His students looked at him, confused.

"Tag, you're it," he announced, stabbing the Mist leader with a kunai.

One of his students screamed, but they all fled in different directions as Shino had intended. Now all they had to do was evade being tagged long enough for Shino to chase down the Mist nin.

The leader howled and staggered back, bleeding profusely.

"You're pretty fast," he spat, forming seals, "but not fast enough."

Two arcs of water sliced through the air. Shino dodged the first and was grazed by the second. He sent a swarm of kikai at the leader and created a clone while he was distracted.

"Ew, I hate bugs! Get them off!" he heard the Mist nin scream at his doppleganger as Shino took off after the other two ninja.

His seeking kikaichu found the second Mist nin merrily blowing up trees searching for his two students. They were hiding behind a tree just to the left of the field of destruction. He sent a kikai to tell them to run and rejoin the Inuzuka.

His initial kikai returned to him, alerting Shino that the leader was now passed out from blood and chakra loss.

"How wasteful," Shino said, announcing his presence to the second Mist chuunin. The enemy ninja turned to scowl at him.

"I'll show you wasteful, Konoha scum!" she threatened. Behind her, his students flitted away to safety.

"I do not want to hurt you," Shino warned, assuming a fighting stance.

"Boo-hoo," she mocked, forming seals. A whirlpool opened at Shino's feet, sucking him in part way. He used a flicker technique to escape and appear behind her.

He raised a kunai, handle-down, to bash her over the head but was barrelled over by a wave of water.

He coughed. A few stray kikai struggled to swim in the pools of water. The third Mist nin now stood with the second in the clearing amongst the tree debris. Surreptitiously, Shino released a few kikai with a mission to fly into their eyes, temporarily blinding them. He made a show of struggling to stand, grasping his sluggishly bleeding side as though it were a grievous wound.

"I can handle two of you," he goaded them. "I already took out your leader."

The third nin swatted at a kikai, paying it no mind.

"Like you handled my wave, right," he cackled. Behind them, Shino spied his students congregating. Mentally, he willed them not to intervene.

"You simply caught me off guard," Shino explained, "I'll be ready this time."

The two mist nin took off at a run. Shino feigned surprise, waited until the last second to dodge their combined wall of water. He miscalculated and the wall clipped him on his bleeding side, starting a fresh flow. He stumbled, turning to face them. They swatted at a few more kikai as the bugs grew bolder.

"Shino-sensei needs help!" he heard the Inuzuka hissing to the other students behind him.

"No-" he turned to admonish them just as the kikai found the mark, the Mist nin screamed, and the Inuzuka came flying out of the trees with his pup, barrelling right into the blindly attacking Mist nin. His scream cut through the air, deafening.

Shino quickly dispatched the flailing Mist nins, no longer caring about diplomacy or sparing lives.

"Touru," he shouted, gathering the whimpering child in his arms. His other students gathered over his shoulder. The Inuzuka was holding his stomach, hands glistening red. When he coughed, blood spilled from his mouth.

"I'm sorry, Shino-sensei," he spluttered, spraying blood, "I thought I could help-"

The rest fuzzed out. Shino's ears were ringing.

A flash of red, tribal tattoos under fresh blood. Kiba smelled of iron and sweat. The world blurred at the edges as Shino held him close.

"I'm sorry Shino-" Kiba's voice was rough. Shino hated it. "I tried to get back in time, I-"

"Kiba, Kiba stay with me," Shino's voice sounded frantic to his own ears. He searched Kiba for wounds, found too many to know where to start. Behind him, Akamaru stood drenched in Kiba's blood from bearing him to Konoha. To Shino.

Kiba was fading from consciousness. Shino shook him, and he blinked back. Shino had called for Sakura, they just had to hold on. Just a little longer.

"Damn Mist nins," Kiba coughed, spilling more blood down his chin. "Can never trust 'em."

"I know," Shino agreed, desperate to keep Kiba talking. "Kiba, you're soaked."

"Fucking water jutsu," Kiba laughed, or cried. It was unclear. He complained, "Smell like wet dog."

"Never," Shino assured him. Kiba's breath rattled, more blood spilled down his face. He was growing cold in Shino's arms.

"Love ya," Kiba let out a breathy gasp, clinging to Shino's jacket.

"No, Kiba, don't-" Shino implored, "Don't leave me, Kiba-"

The fingers curled tightly in Shino's jacket loosened, then dropped. Kiba was dead weight in Shino's arms.

"I love you, too," Shino whispered to Kiba's retreating warmth, but it was too late. Kiba couldn't hear him.

Someone was shouting at him. His ears were ringing.

"Oh my god, oh my god, Touru's gunna die, what do we do-" one of his students was wailing, "What do we do?"

"I'm sorry," Touru whimpered repeatedly, shivering.

"Aburame-sensei," another had their fingers curled in his jacket, "Please stop crying!"

His students.

Reality slammed back into Shino. He blinked, then blinked again. The world swam back into focus.

"Grab Kyomaru," Shino instructed, standing. He adjusted his hold on Touru, ignoring the slick blood on his hands. "We must return to Konoha as quickly as possible."

Keeping his students in front of him, in his line of sight, they raced back to Konoha.

Shino stared at the white sleeping pill in his palm. An iron band clamped around his chest, choking him.

He added a second pill and chased them down with water.

Kiba was warm beside him in bed. The man was always a furnace. Unfortunately, it was summer and warm inside. But Shino snuggled in, spooning his lover anyways. Kiba hummed languidly as Shino trailed playful nips up his neck.

"Mm, good morning," Kiba's voice was rough. Shino loved it. Hated it.

Unclear.

"Yes," Shino said, grazing fingers across the ripple of muscle and ribs that was Kiba's side as the younger man stretched, whole and healthy. A few scars criss-crossed his skin, but no wounds. He was whole. "A very good morning."

He deliberately ground his morning arousal against the cleft of Kiba's ass, ignoring the twinge of pain in his side as he did, earning a bark of laughter.

"Please," he finally whined, and Shino rewarded him, making it a very good morning, indeed.

"That's the best way to start the day," Kiba pronounced, flopping over to grin at Shino.

Shino quite agreed. He would start every day this way, if he could.

"Breakfast?" he asked, hoping to further delay Kiba. Kiba laughed and darted in for a peck before rolling out of bed.

"Can't," he apologized. "Got that mission in Mist today. I'm already late," he winked. Shino's vision swam. He blinked it away. Kiba complained, "Ugh, I hate going to Mist. It's humid and I smell like wet dog."

"Be safe," Shino said instead as Kiba hopped in the shower.

"Always," Kiba's promise floated back to him.

Shino got out of bed, too. There was blood on the sheets, and he absently pressed a hand to his aching side. It came away bloody, and Shino twisted to inspect the growing red patch on the bandages around his waist.

He stripped the bedding and threw it in the laundry, changed the bandaging on his waist, and dressed.

Satisfied, Shino went to prepare breakfast, knowing Kiba would happily take something to go.

Pushing aside a plate of old toast, he grabbed the loaf of bread. Only the crust end of the bread remained. No toast, then. He would have to get more bread on his way to the hospital to visit Touru. He popped the remaining slice into the toaster for Kiba.

"Gah, where's my kunai holster?" Kiba shouted.

"By the moth display," Shino shouted back.

"Aha!"

Shino smiled to himself as he rummaged for jam and butter. He had just finished buttering the last slice of toast when Kiba came bounding in.

"Thanks!" he said, snatching it off the plate before Shino could say anything. "Love ya!" he threw over his shoulder around a mouthful of toast.

"I love you, too," Shino whispered to Kiba's retreating warmth, but it was too late.

Kiba was already gone.

Notes:

I almost titled this "Toast", as I have begun to think of this as The Toast Fic.

In case it was confusing, Shino is intentionally making himself forget that Kiba died and is reliving the last (good) thing he remembers, the last good time with Kiba before Kiba died. He's also always trying to tell Kiba he loves him, but just like when Kiba died, he's waited too long and it's too late.
