His eyes gleamed bright in the shining, silver light of the moon as he looked into the eyes of his lover. His orangey-red hair was long and fell to his waist like a gleaming sunset dripping from his head, twisting braids running through it like snakes running through grass. His lover reached up and wrapped a hand around the back of his neck and leaned in for a gentle kiss. Soft sweet tones of a love song played in the background as they danced in the desert moonlight, with only a boombox and a couple, now empty, bottles of cheap beer to accompany their foray.
“Te amo. Mi Corazon. Mi Estrella.” His lover whispered these words in Spanish as he pulled away from the impassioned kiss. I love you. My Heart. My Star. All loving platitudes and names from the man who he loved more than life, the man who had taught him how to love. He had never known a love like this before, and he felt as if he would never know love like that again. He had been so lonely before he had met his lover, a gorgeous man with sparkling brown eyes and dark hair and tan skin and a smile so beautiful that nothing could compare. If he had to choose between all of the stars in the sky and all of the treasures of the earth, or one smile from the love of his life, he would always choose that smile.
“I would sacrifice the world for you. My heart is yours.” He whispered back as he ran his hands through his companion’s rough, wavy hair. It was rough in texture, yet it was the most comforting feeling to him. If he could reach out and touch him, just feel his skin under his, feel his breath on his skin, it meant that he was there, that he had someone he could count on. He had someone who could have his back in any situation, no matter what.
“Estrella?” The voice of the man he loved so much broke through the quiet of the night. His voice was a raspy baritone, soft and gentle, but it could crescendo into a bellowing laugh or into heaving sobs, just depending on the mood. It could be angry; it could be happy. His lover was a man full of duality. Just like the earth they walked upon.
“Yes, my love?” He replied in a soft, even tone, his own voice was a gentle bass, somber and rumbling, contrasting sharply with his unlined face and his delicately formed features. He had high cheekbones, olive skin, brown eyes, and a delicate nose that gave away hints of an East Asian heritage. All of this combined with his hair and his towering height cut a striking figure, even in the pale moonlight where only the most noticeable of features could be seen.
“Do you know how to dance? There’s a song I’ve always wanted to dance to, and I want to know if you knew how to.” His voice was timid and soft, almost as if he was scared to ask his lover this query.
“Even if I could not dance, I would learn for you. I would move the Earth and shatter the stars just to do the tiniest of waltzes with you. If I only had a minute left on this world, but there was a song playing, I would want to spend it basking in your loving embrace and holding you while I still could.” His love poured out in this emotional outburst as he shared his intense feelings with the man he cared for so much.
“A simple yes would suffice, but I appreciate the emotional response, and I reciprocate it, although I lack your command of the English language.” His lover chuckled ruefully as he took his hands and began to spin them around, leading them in a slow dance in a circle on the packed earth in the cool night.
They danced as the music played. He noticed that the song had not changed, it had been the same song the whole time, King Harvest’s Dancing in the Moonlight, but it fit. It was so beautiful, from the ambiance of the night and its soft light reflecting off the moon to the sound of the music to the feeling of his lover’s hands in his as suddenly one of his hands moved to his waist. They moved closer together, and they started moving a little bit faster. The music turned into mere white noise as they became lost in the moment, just taking each other in. It was all just the sound of each other’s breathing, the feeling of skin on skin and the nighttime air around them, cooling them as they became hot with all the passion the love they felt brought with them. And then, it stopped, and the spell broke.
“Thank you for taking me out tonight. I really needed this.” His lover whispered softly as he disengaged, his lover’s hands leaving his waist and coming up to cup his cheeks and pull him down for another long kiss. “But we have to go. The others will be waiting for us. You know that we can’t leave our friends waiting.”
He sighed. He did not want to go. When he was out here, in the desert, for all that it was dry and seemingly barren, he felt so at home, because he was with the man he loved more than himself. When it was just them, he felt more alive and more like a person than he did at any other time. He did not want to give that up so soon. He had not had enough time.
“Fine.” He said reluctantly as he followed his lover to their waiting car at the edge of the highway. They had to go back to where their friends were covering their absence from listening ears and watchful eyes. But someday they would return to that spot in the desert and dance in the moonlight once more.
